Anyone on the pre-op diet?

Recommended Posts

Today I am on the second day of my pre-op diet and omg this crap sucks! After getting over the fact that this is horrible i go to what makes it barable, for me its sugar free Jello. I don't know how I would survive this diet without it. What is helping you or helped you get through and when/was your surgery date?

Dec. 8th 2010 surgery date.

Ok I am on a 2 week liquid diet and down to my 6th day...and I am having some serious food cravings...I have been strictly doing my clear liquid diet for 4 days, had a small portion on Turkey day and then back to the diet..It is hard, but I am wondering how long does it really take to shrink you liver. :o I know that this is a new journey and I am up for the change that is coming, but eating nothing for 2 weeks but sf Jello, popsicles, and drinking broth, Protein Shakes, and crystal light is giving me the worse head aches..

I have 8 days to go and my surgery is on Dec. 6 so it is all down hill and I will do my best to stay to the liquids for the remainder of these days...

Nothing that we really want comes easy in life...stay strong everyone...let's support one another thru this part of our new journey....:D

the first day was horrible for me! i had a horrible headache, i was nauseous all day and almost pucked once from being so hungry and then my body just hurt all over. it sucked so bad even my hubby was feeling sorry for me. the second day i woke up and felt great though! it was a real shocker to me, i was expecting misery for at least the first week. Also today on day 3 i still feel great!

I have not done my pre op diet yet, but from the postings I feel like I am lucky that my Dr. only requires 1 week. I think I'd go crazy with 2. I think it is 4 days shakes and 3 days Clear Liquids. I was just curious though, during the pre op diet phase, does anyone have energy to exercise? Or do you just concentrate on the not feeling sick to your stomach, I know when I get to hungry I start getting nauseaus.

I was banded 09/08/10 and the first day of the pre-op diet was the worst. I used a Protein supplement called Protein Bullet that had 42 grams of protein. That is really what saved me. I usually had one of those every day. I really never had a problem with feeling hungry. Good luck to you.

My surgery date is Dec 2nd and I didn't have any problems with the first week of my 2 week liquid pre-op diet but once I allowed myself to eat some food on Thanksgiving I have had a lot more trouble sticking to it. I have lost 12 lbs so far but it is getting more and more difficult to not eat solid food. I will say that as long as I keep my Protein intake around 100g per day I don't feel hungry for the most part. I think what I am dealing with is more head hunger than physical hunger.

I started my diet on the 24th. I did cheat for turkey day dinner. I have been drinking Protein Shakes all day and eating SMALL meals for dinner. I feel like I always have a headache. This is hard. I am having surgery in Florida and will be there away from where I live for 3 weeks so friends are wanting to get together to say goodbye before I leave and this is hard because they want to meet in bars or out to dinner. 2 things I can ot do!!!

BUT I want to loose the weight!! I WILL be strong!! December 8th is my surgery date!!

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣
