Just banded a week ago and I'm HUNGRY!

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone :)

So I was banded last Tuesday, the 16th. My surgeon put me on Clear liquids for 10 days and I'm going buggy! I did have to have some SF pudding (which is in the next stage) just so that I felt like I had something in my stomach. But I'm starting to feel so hungry like I could eat a whole cow! Everything I think about seems to be food related...I was reading a John Grisham novel, to try and keep my mind off things...and all I seemed to see was all the food the main character was eating....I had to stop reading! Someone please tell me this will go away soon!

I"m driving myself crazy...a friend of mine who got her band 8 months ago told me that she did a shortened version of the doc's (we have the same surgeon) liquid diet. She moved to full liquids within a week instead of the 10 days and she said she moved on to some soft solids after the first visit with the surgeon. I'm praying that this happens for me as well...I go see him tomorrow and I'm in so need of some real food!! I'd be absolutely ecstatic to eat a salad...I know that's probably a long way off...but I can still dream!

With T-day only a couple days away, I would really just like to be able to process up some turkey and mom's potato salad so I can at least have the flavors in my mouth!

Am I the only one??

Hi. I was banded the same day. My doc required a 7 day clear liquid and then moved on to full liquids today. I am so glad. I hope that after your visit the doc allows you to go to full liquid.

I was only on a 3 day clear liquid diet prior to my surgery...day of surgery (Nov 2nd) and up to November 16th I was on the Puree diet....it was hard especially once I was feeling better. Will power is what it will take and we are strong bandsters so I know you will prevail. Stay Strong

Wecome to "bandster hell"

It started for me about 48 hours after my surgery.....I was put on a straw diet, in other words anything I could fit up a straw......well needless to say I became quite creative blending up clam chowder, chilie, thinning my mashed potatos. Stuff like that, thinning my scrambled eggs with mayo, blending my tuna and adding extra mayo so it was like pudding, cause pudding you could get up a straw if you had to. You are a week out, maybe you could call the Dr.s office and see if you could advance to mushies...I've read of other people who have done that.

Good Luck and hang tough!

I'm right there with you!

Banded on 11/17 (so day 6 post op for me). I had a full 2 week liver reduction diet, and now I have a full 2 week liquid diet. I am starving, I mean double dog starving and the gas pains are still incredible (both from in my abdomen and in my tummy). I am dropping almost a pound a day but it is really hard to keep this up. I also have little to no energy so I can't start any real exercise (even low impact yet). I go on mushies after one more week, thank goodness.

Whew, all that said, we will make it through and this should kickstart the whole process and weightloss.

I sure hope some of the hunger pangs go away.

i was banded on the same day as you - i had to call my dietian on monday when i returned to work because i just couldn't take the clear liquids anymore - i was shaking. i was to start full liquids on wednesday but she said it was ok to start having boost then on monday. well i went on and had finely blended Soups also - i also get very creative w/my blending of foods - never thought i'd eat them - but they're not bad!! i LOVE my imersion blender!! i add chicken stock to a lot of different Beans and make Soup out of them.

anyway - i only have a little at a time - maybe 4 oz - but it really helps me and i don't miss 'real' food because i'm having it only it's blended.

good luck to you!!

I was told a staw diet as well. From day one I have had Jello, pudding cups, ice cream, shakes, cream Soups, ect... I've had a shake twice and ice cream twice, and I think I'll have it totally out of my system when I get to eat real food. I don't want anymore already. I went to a restaurant and ordered a couple bowls of chicken Soup broth. It tastes so much better than the canned stuff. I could actually make out the veggie flavors in it. I know I am also allowed to try soft mushy foods when I am ready. My post op is two weeks out from my surgery because of the holiday, but he said I don't have to wait that long. Good luck, maybe they'll give in a little if you give them a call.

I was also banded same day. My doctor had me on clear liquids for 2 days and could add Protein Shakes, pudding, cream of wheat, mashed potatoes, cream Soups. Don't get to move on until 15th day after doctor. Had mashed potatoes tonight, the first food with a utensil since before surgery. Not sure how it's suppose to feel, but it tasted good to not drink a meal. Sounds like everyone 's doctor is a little different.

LMBO, Kelly, this made me giggle.

Thanks everyone for commiserating with me! I think I needed that most of all! Good to hear that others are able to eat a bit more with the blessing of their surgeons...I'm not sure was Dr Velarde will say...but at least I won't feel bad when I mush my T-day food! I'm not gonna lie...I'm mushing some turkey...I'll stick with the healthy foods, but I'm mushing soon, dammit! lol I figure I'll stick everything in my Kitchenaid mini-chop (which if you don't have you def should get!!) and make it the consistency of tuna...then I'll add some broth, or a small bit of gravy.

I know I can be strong and will be strong...I just needed to be reminded!

It's also nice to hear from the peeps who got banded the same day as me! :)

I'm just starting day 6 post op. I have zero hunger still. I'm hoping my surgeon found some magic spot on my stomach and the band stops hunger from the outside! I know I will get hungry eventually. Right now, I am on mushies. I called 2days out from surgery and said I could not tolerate anymore awful clear Protein supps. My stomach was so noisy and rolling around, I had no enery at all. Plus nausea and lightheaded. After several questions about my healing, my dr moved me to mushies and full liquids. I felt 100% better after a tablespoon of cottage cheese. Thruout that day, I finished that little cup and I really did feel great. I'm only eating 1-3TBL at a meal. Last night I did the refried Beans f/f with a tsp of greek yogurt and a TBL of cheddar. Took me 20min to eat and I really did get that softstop full feeling.

My advice is to talk with your dr's office if you are truly struggling with the liquids. I can't believe that feeling bad and weak is helping anyone's healing.

I had my band done on 17th and stuck with the clear liquids diet. My post op appt was today and he said I could graduate to full liquids and mushy foods as my stomach will permit. i had about a cup of cream of chicken Soup with no problem. I am planning on trying a little smushed turkey and mashed potatoes tomorrow, hoping I will be problem free. I do feel hungry and my stomach growls alot. I also drink too fast and get gas pains but am trying to slow down.

I know exactly how you feel, .. whatever you do, I give this advise... "STICK TO THE DOCTOR'S ORDERS". Don't drift away from the goal. Trust me, I felt like I was going to die of hunger on the third day. I know your probably thinking "My stomach feels like it can process food, especially some soft turkey".. Well it CAN NOT, atleast not yet. Hang in there, it will get easier!! Stay focused and wish you the best.

I was banded on the 19th and I knew today was different because I could drink cold Water with no spasms. But I also noticed that I was starving and the liquids I was throwing down the hatch were not satisfying.

I went to a friend's house for T-day and I fixed me a plate using the desert plates she had. I had one spoon of mashed potatoes w/gravy, one spoon of sweet potatoes, one spoon of green Beans, and a few slices of jellied cranberry sauce. I died and went to heaven! I chewed the green Beans well but the potatoes were already smashed up so they didn't any help and the cranberry was like Jello. That kept me full for about 2 hours but I am hungry again. I ate a small fruit cup and then started drinking Water.< /p>

Tomorrow I will start with the Protein drink again and water to see if that can keep me pacified.

Hi,

I was also banded on the 16th and I am having the same exact problem - - still hungry and I did exactly what your friend did!!! I did the full liquid until this past Tuesday. I am sticking to liquids for Breakfast and lunch but yesterday and today I have had some pureed consistency foods and that has really made the difference. I am still getting 60 grams a Protein via the drinks, but yesterday and tonight I add about 2 tbs of mashed potatoes and a few bites of fat free small curd cottage cheese.

I plan to continue with this until I see the surgeon on 12/3 - and I'll see what she says at that time. Let me know what you decide and how it works!!

I was banded the 17th. That first week SUCKS!! All I could think about was food. I was so weak and hungry, called my dr and nurse said stick with clear liquids:( Went in Wed and nutritionist said, oh I would of let you have Protein Shakes. I got to progress to full liquids, and mushy food, and I am in heaven. I feel so much better now! Hang in their!!!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
