Hi,

My daughter and I both have had lap band surgery and Hashimotos. She has lost 80 pounds since Dec. 2009 and I have lost 50 pounds since Feb 2010. We both take synthroid. I have to say that I think that maybe the thyroid condition might have made it a little harder but if you have a good "mind set" it is definately something that you can do! By "mindset" I mean that you are ready to lose weight and will contain a positive attitude and JUST DO IT ! Thanks Tina:thumbup:

Sounds like you're both doing just AWESOME!!! :)

The problem with ME is ...i've always had the right "mind set" when I went into a life style change or diet - for example weight watchers....but I would do everything right and not see results --- then I'd quit cause I'd feel so sad and frustrated. I just hated that feeling!!!!

with the lap band - how is THAT really going to help me ? but I know it's my last option.

I have hypothyroidism as well. Sometimes I think that is the reason for my slower weight loss. On my 2 week pre-op liquid diet I only lost 6 lbs. I am very happy with my progress so far, but it seems like I'm slower than a lot of folks. I have recently added exercise - 3x/wk and am hoping that kicks up my weight loss. So far tho, I've been exercising for 4 weeks and have not lost anything. I've been keeping my calories between 1,000 - 1,200 / day.

I found out I was hypo in 1976 and have been on thyroid medicine since. Before banding, the weight was so hard to lose. I was banded 09022010 and have lost 24 pounds, which doesn't seem like a lot to me but hey at least I am losing and that is the main goal here. I just had my 2nd fill so hopefully it will go faster but because I do have a thyroid problem if I plateau or it is just slow I don't sweat it. But by all means take your medicine, because it not only messes with your weight but with so many other parts of the body especially the nerve center. Losing weight is already a depressing process but if you are on thyroid medication and don't take it you will get depressed and it will make matters worse. Take it from an old pro. LOL

:smile:I know what you mean by being on diets in the past and giving up because they seemed to have stop working. I am not sure how the lapband is going to work differently than the past diets I have been on. I just hope and pray it does. The thing that I keep telling myself is that if the lapband can be readjusted if needed when you stop losing weight then that will help keep you losing weight and you won't give up out of frustration and lack of motivation. That was the main reason I chose the lapband. The idea being that if the lapband takes the true belly hunger away after a small meal then I can live with that the rest of my life. Hopefully I will be healthier and thinner and used to eating small amounts of normal everyday foods and be satisfied. When my Dr. asked me what I wanted from this surgery I told him that I just want to eat like a normal person. To be able to go out with friends and be able to eat a couple small peices of pizza and be satisfied and not want to eat the 4 0r 5 pieces I would have pre lapband surgery. Go to a birthday party, wedding or Christmas party have a small plate of food and dessert and not eat like I was never going to get to eat again. Hopefully the band can help me be NORMAL. Tina

Like all of you, I also have hypothyroidism. I also have Hashimoto's. My weight loss has been much slower than many of those who were banded after me. I was banded on July 13th and have lost 31 pounds so far. I have had three fills so far and am at 4.5 cc in a 10 cc band.

I try not to look at many of the posts on here because I get disappointed that my loss has been much slower than others. But...I am still VERY PROUD of what I've accomplished so far!

My endrocrinologist says the only difference between before and after surgery is that my levels need to monitored closer now since I absorb my synthroid differently now. All of my doctors are thrilled at my rate of loss, so I need to just accept that this is the way my journey is going to be.

Just know that your thyroid can impact your rate of weight loss, but don't let it drive how good you feel about the progress that you make-Whatever your rate!

Hi

I'm scheduled for surgery in January and I'm just curious how those with hypo-thyroidism are making out with their lap-band®...?

I know how slowly I lose weight NOW with it - (I also have type II Diabetes controlled by metformin).

I'd love to hear from all of you that have this thyroid disorder to see how you're making out or how you've made out...

Thanks

renee

Hi, I also have hypo, I had to crush the meds for the first couple of weeks, and wasn't really sure they were totally effective being crushed. But I did not see or feel any major differences losing weight. I am losing 1-2 pounds a week which for me is fantastic. I'm still very exhausted though, but I guess that will take time. Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

Hey guys! I've been on both sides of the thyroid- hyper with graves disease to complete hypo after RAI. My body has been through a lot in a few short years. I often wonder what it's role is in this weight loss mission i'm on. I definitely kept gaining weight as soon as I was hypothyroid and I'm on sinthrod forever now. I think my WL is mostly due to the quantity of exercise and effort I put into this. I barely scrape a pound off a week- barely. I Zumba 8x week, Bootcamp 2x week. Even if I have to work super hard at the loss part, in the back of my mind I tell myself- it won't come back on. Just keep moving forward. i think it complicates things, but I've got my eye on the prize. I've lost 50lbs and have about 40 to go. My surgery was in March 10, and post op I've lost over 30. Slow going. I also have 7ccs now.

When I'm focusing, I lose between 7-10 pounds a month. There have been some months when I've lost 4 pounds and some months when I've lost almost 20. I am really not compliant when it comes to taking pills, but I recently started taking my synthroid again. Not sure if its helping or not, but I hope it is. I also exercise a lot. But I haven't really felt the effects of my hypothyroidism in my weightloss and I'm happy with the way its going.

Dear Violinist--you must take Snythroid daily, preferably at the same time, because the disease affects your body on the cellular level. Your disease is nothing to be casual about. You may be young, and if you want to be healthy to a ripe old age, get that life-saving medicine in your bod each day! No, you may not die right away from not taking it, but I promise your quality of life will suffer and you will be risking your long-term health. I don't know what bad possibilities I can lay out for you, to impress you, because I have not read up on the disease in 25 years since I was diagnosed. I have taken this little pill every day of my life since then, even though some times I had no health insurance & had to choose between this prescrip. and more food for the kids. That's how important it is. So choose to make a $ sacrifice, if that is your situation, give up something else, for you long term health. Please, take advantage of the gift of medical science and get the pills and take them. There's no ____ side effects! Don't make excuses for causing yourself poor health, you have to be somewhat bright if you read music & play a stringed instrument w/no frets (ha ha) Good luck to you.

I had my thyroid totally removed about 4 years ago and have been on Levothyroxine ever since. My weight has come off pretty quick (my 4 month bandiversary was 12/08/10), but has slowed down a little bit. I had to get to my doctor and she had to change my medication to a different dose. My weight loss (almost 40 lbs) affected how my medicine was working and my levels were really low. I am pretty sure that the reason my weight loss has slowed, is because of this and the fact that I think I've been eating too much bready/starchy food. It's not like it was a lot. Will definitely be cutting back down on that stuff. Good luck to you.

I have Hypothyroid and PCOS as well. I was banded on June 28, 2010. I have lost 52 lb. since the surgery and feel great. I reached "onederland" the other day and almost started to cry. I have dropped 4 sizes. I do work out 5-6 days/week which has definitely helped with the steady weight loss. The only think I regret about getting my band is not doing it sooner. I have about 50lbs. to go before reaching my goal. I then hope to start working on the baby thing again. Good luck to you. It's a decision that will change and ultimately save your life!

Been hypothyroid for 18 years. Been off and on meds, natural and synthetic. Done well on both as far as symptoms went, but thyroid treatment never actually helped me with weight loss, per se. Probably because, in reality, I had a terrible relationship with food.

I had been off meds for quite a few years when it was re-diagnosed during my initial lap-band office visit. I went back on synthroid because I didn't want anything slowing or inhibiting my weight loss. As a Certified Herbalist I generally don't like meds but in this case my size 24 butt overruled my herbalist heart and I faithfull take my Synthroid each day.

I'm a 'low & slow' loser but I can't really say if that's from my thyroid issues or my way of dealing with my band. But the bottom line is that even with hypothyroidism I am losing and feel great.

I'm sure you'll do great as well.

And on a personal note....Thyroid problems bite! What a pain in the ass. How can one little gland cause so much difficulty! :P

P.S. I will assume that is an 'after' photo you have listed. Even if it isn't, you still look fab!

I have been diagnosed with thyroid issues and pcos since college. The 2 have definitely affected weight loss over the years as well as my own issues with food. Since banded in Aug '10, I have lost 50 pounds. Its slow at times, but it will happen. It is so important to take your synthroid- especially at the same time and not with food. My doctor can tell instantly if I haven't been doing something right with the medicine. Not to mention when the levels need adjusting, I usually can tell since all of a sudden I'll be really tired all the time. Take the help modern medicine can give you and enjoy the rewards!rolleyes.gif

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
