Congrats everyone on their surgery's this week. Can't wait until the 30th. Had some bumps in the road this week. I am so sick. I've missed work all week. I went to the doctor probably two weeks ago and was told I just had allergies and that I would be fine. I was given an antibiotic and felt better a week later. Then this weekend started feel awful again. Got to see my PCP this time and she put me on a stronger anti-biotic she said to call if I dont feel better by tomorrow so that we can try something else. She wants me better ASAP so I dont have to reschedule my surgery. I do too. I am so bummed. I have eaten through my PTO time I was saving for the surgery at work. Now I'll be on Leave without pay the week after surgery. But, everything will be ok. I asked my hubby if he thought I should push the date back theres no way either of us want to do that. I've been waiting for this for so long. Good Luck to everyone and thanks to everyone for posting their stories love to hear every detail. :-)

Stay on top of this stuff RiahRiah !!! I have been crossing my fingers and "warding off" anyone with any kind of sniffles or anything so I don't have to reschedule surgery also. My day is the day after yours!!!

That's exactly what we all have in common right now, DREAMS!! It's the first time that we have been able to believe that those dreams could be reality. You have a great dream and you are going to make it come true.

Oh, man, that sucks. I sure hope you get better quick so you don't have to reschedule. Over and above that it sucks that you are now into unpaid leave. I'm sorry you are going through this. It will be worth it in the end. Keep your chin up. :)

Hello Guys,

My name is Mandie, I have posted on other August boards, so I figured, why not post here too. My surgery date is Agust 25,2010. I am going through my week of high Protein, low carbs, low fats, low calorie foods. I only have to do one day of liquids the day before my surgery and after surgery, I will be on 3 weeks of liquids. I purchased the Boost High Protein Drink (vanilla and chocolate). I think that I am going to do a laxative Sunday morning (August 22nd) just because I am generally a constipated person and the thought of straining after surgery freaks me out. lol! Anyway, I know that's too much information, but it's definitely something that I am concerned about.

You Guys, I want a ticker! Can someone please explain to me how to set this up and running??

Good luck to those having surgery today! I hope that you feel better soon RiahRiah, nothing worse than being sick. I am on day 12 of Optifast with an allowance of 2 cups of low carb veges a day and I have to say that I am getting fed up still have 9 days to go (surgery 30th Aug). Cooking meals for DH and the kids is getting more and more strained. When it came to bacon and eggs on Sunday I left them to do it themselves. I have a question, has anyone else been offered Plication with their band? My surgeon has suggested it and has left it to me to decide which way to go, I have been madly reading as much info as possible on the subject.

My name is Shelly. I was also banded 8/16. How are you feeling? I'm still sore and have gas pains. Its tough for me to get in all my fluids but I am trying. Have you found any Protein Drinks that you can tolerate? The sweet ones make me nauseated. I appreciate any advice you have!

Hi Shelly, fellow August 16th bandster here. I know how you feel about all the sweets. I normally have a sweet tooth but this liquid thing is killing me. I am literally sucking on pretzels and spitting them out to get some other flavor into my mouth. I unfortunately cannot have shakes until next Monday (a whole week of nothing but clear liquids). However, during my pre-op phase I used to spice up the shakes to take some of the sweetness out. Cinnamon is good with vanilla shakes and I like adding extracts (such as almond) to the chocolate ones. It doesn't take all the sweetness out but it does tone it down a bit.

Susie

It was tough for me to get the fluids in too and I ended up in the ER day 4 post op because I was dehydrated. Keep the fluids going!

Hi Shelly, I too was banded on 8/16. I am sore but am starting to feel better with less gas pain. It is tough to get in all of the fluids and the Protein Shakes are getting old. I try just putting them in an insulated cup and sipping on them all day. As for flavors I like the Atkins diet ones the best. A little higher in calories but right now I am concentrating on just getting them down. lol Good luck and keep up the good work!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
