Hello Everyone!

I am new to this thread. My surgery date is 8/25. I am so excited and nervous all at the same time. I know that I am doing something that will help me to lead a better quality of life, but I still have some apprehensions. Best of luck to everyone on their journey.

Jamie:smile:

Jamie, I felt the same way and in reading these threads it seems a lot of people had the same apprehensions. It's a big deal! I was freaking out myself and questioning my decision. I am 3 days post op and glad to be on the other side of surgery. Now, it's one day at a time. Good luck! Welcome to the group.

Hello and welcome, My surgery date is mon 8/16 and I have been teary and aprehensive all day. I think it is a combination of nerves and pre-opp liquid diet, but quite normal from what I read here. You will do wonderful, and be so much healthier and happier after the surgery. Good Luck to you and all my fellow August Rushers wherever you are in your journey!

Hey Laurie,

I'm in the same boat as you. I'm going in on 8/16 too.

Thankfully, I didn't have to do a pre-op diet except for tomorrow I have to have liquids all day and take a bottle of citrate of magnesia to clean my bowels. :)

I planned to do the liquids on my own but I have been so stressed with everything that I haven't really been able to do it. I haven't been going crazy and having big last meals and I've been watching my carbs and sugar.

I'm an emotional eater and my DH is stressing me today and my Father is sick and my family is aggravating me so I am trying hard not to go on a fried food frenzy.

I'm going to eat something and then go to bed early.

Dee

Hi Dee,

You are soooo lucky not to be on this pre-opp diet. I have been miserable and tearful all day. Seems like all I see is food, and have a headache I cannot get rid of. Only good thing is I haven't cheated at all!!. Oh well it will be worth it I can't wait for Monday to hurry up and get here. I know we will both do great.

Hey Everyone,

My surgery date is 08/30, unfortunately I am on day 8 of 21 on the Optifast shakes. I am seeing the Dr on Tuesday for the pre-op consultation so will probablly find out then how much I need to lose, ( so far its 3.8kg). I am exitedly apprehensive. Many health insurers in Australia are not covering bariactric surgery any longer. I just got in with mine. BTW how do I attach the diet ticker, I just can't figure it out?

Hey Laurie,

I imagine it's hard but in some ways I wish I had to do the pre-op diet. I haven't been going crazy but I'm the nervous type and now I'm scared that they will open me up tomorrow and say "no, we can't do it, she ate this or she had a glass of wine and that blew her liver up"

I know it hasn't been easy for you though. I'm doing all liquids today and I had to take a bottle of citrate of magnesia..ugh!!

Don't forget to check in as soon as you can tomorrow. Don't forget the other site too. What time is your surgery tomorrow?

I don't have to be at the hospital until 12:30p so I probably won't be going in until about 2 or after.

I'll check back in as soon as I can.

Go to bed early tonight . Get some good rest.

Dee

Thanks for the well wishes. I know I'm crazy.

I'm walking around the house looking at things like my dirty mirrors in the bathroom and thinking "If I don't come home what will they think of me" I'm looking at my jewelry wondering who will get it.

Looking at my shoes thrown on the closet floor thinking I should put them away. :cursing:

My PCP reassured me all is well but honestly I won't feel good until I'm back in my own bed.

Dee, I did the same exact thing. Made sure I told everyone that I loved them, etc. You will be fine. It's scary but you will be just fine. Please let us know as soon as you can how you made out.

Hi Dee, I guess this liquid diet is good in someways to prepare me for what lies ahead. I have surgery at 12:30 tomorrow and am getting more and more nervous today. I have to be at the hospital at 10:30 and hope it goes quickly after that. I will get back to you and let you know. Good luck tomorrow I know we will both be fine and happy to be banded. Take care.

Starting my pre-op diet tomorrow. Hope I'm ready! I feel like I am emotionally but wondering how I will do physically -- I feel like "the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak" - I guess this is a good chance to practice being stronger than my flesh. Hope everyone is doing well!! I anyone else scheduled for the 31st. I guess I will be one of the last ones getting banded from the August Rush. Take care everyone.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
