I'm a newbie! 3 day Post Op!

Hello everyone!

I got my lapband surgery done this Monday. I am super excited and looking forward to the many changes in my life. I am on liquid diet and tomorrow moving foward with the nutrition liquid diet.

I have been doing great... healing just fine and thinking of going back to work tomorrow already. I live on my own but a cousin stayed with me as my parents live in another state.

I lost 10 lbs *doc said to lose around that much* prior to surgery so I am down to 210. I need to get a weight scale as I already feel that I've lost some since surgery date. I look at the mirror and my face is starting to look thinner.

I came in at 220 and my goal is to be at 160. I am 5'7 btw.

Anyways - just wanted to say hello and thank you as this forum helped me in making my decision in going with the lap band.

I am considering the procedure....but I am so afraid of the pain. How was the pain associated with the band?

I was banded yesterday and I can honestly say I haven't had any real pain..Im a little sore in my belly when I get up and down or turn over in the bed but other than that so far so good. Only taken pain meds before bed to help me sleep.

Right after surgery I had a sore throat from the tubes but warm broth helped that.

Please dont let this stop you its well worth it. If you do have pain your surgeon will give you something for it.

Good Luck to you..

I think everyone handles pain differently. I have a high tolerance for pain and I am extremely stubborn so I found myself not feeling too much pain except as Layla's Grandma stated - when bending over or moving from side to side. Pain killers have been a blessing though!!!

All I can say is make sure that you go to a doctor that can do the procedure AND be the same one to give you the fills. I have heard some crazy stories of people going to get their Lap Band done in Latin America and then having another doctor here for Post Op. Your original doctor knows your body the best and knows where exactly the band was placed...

I hope that I don't have any problems like that...

Do your research.. I did mine for about 5 months before deciding to move forward. So far I am happy as I haven't been crazy in pain or hungry.

Let us know what you decide to do!

CONGRATS!!! stay encouraged!!!!! I am 2 weeks out, and I have lost 65.5 lbs...I lost about 50 of it pre op....it gets easier with the band every day!! I still have pain at my port, but I have no choice in doing some lifting, and my kids always manage to poke me right there!!! ugh!!

go slow!! remember your body is healing, and this time is not about losing..

try your best to get your Protein and Water in!! keep us posted!!

Congratulations! I'm actually and Old-bie? is that a word? OH.. a veteran! nice.. I'm about 2 years out, the best advice I can give you is to stay in contact with your Doctor, they're the only ones that can make sure your band is working to the best of it's ability. I plateued and thought I had it all figured out but I didn't.. I still have some weight to lose to get to my goal weight about 30 more lbs, and I could have done it much sooner if I had consulted with My Doctor sooner. Good luck, you can do it!

Hi Jodi,

My doc told me not start the nutritional drinks until the 4th day... He said to stay on Clear liquids for 3 days. When I saw juice I asked if I could drink Crystal Light and he suggested I instead would drink V8 diet juice blends as that had more nutritional value. When did u start the watery mashed potatoes? I ask bcs my doc said to not start with that 10 days after pre-op.

I'm sorry to hear the pain u r going through.

Let me give you the diet plan I was given:

2-3 days POST Op

Begin hourly feedings and drink slowly

Drink 2-4 oz of fluids every hour in sips

Avoid straws

Avoid extreme temperatures on fluids

Drink sips of Water throughout the day between meals

Sample:

8 am - 4 oz plain coffee or tea

9 am - 4 oz 100% apple juice

10 am - 4 oz sugar free Jello

11 am - 4 oz Gatorade

12 pm - 4 oz sugar free Jello

1 pm - 4 oz cranberry juice (I replaced with v8 juice diet blend)

2 pm - 4 oz broth (not crazy hot)

3 pm - 4 oz Gatorade

4 pm - 4 oz sugar free jello

5 pm - 4 oz 100% juice

6 pm - 4 oz broth

7 pm - 4 oz Gatorade

8 pm - 4 oz Sugar free popcicle

Note that immediately when done I would sip Water and keep near me.

Today I started a full liquid diet

Which it's to be done from day 4 thru day 10

It's still consuming every hour 2-4 oz only this time the fluids are a bit stronger

Sample:

8 am - vanilla Ensure 4-6 oz

9 am - pulp free low calorie 100% Orange juice

10 am - half a cup of fat free sugar free chocolate g

11 am - v8 juice diet blend

12 pm - Skim vanilla Soy milk (it says skim milk but I can't do regular milk! Yuk)

1 pm - 6 oz cream of chicken Soup - strained

2 pm - 4 oz low cal 100% orange juice

3 pm - 1/2 cup of sugar free fat free pudding vanilla

4 pm - 4 oz v8 diet juice blend

5 pm - 4 oz soy milk

6 pm - 6 oz french onion Soup strained

7 pm - 4 oz Butter Pecan Ensure

8 pm - sugar free popcicle

I obviously will change it up and so should you...

But it gives you an idea!

Again the pureed diet (10-20 days post op) doesn't start yet. The watered down mashed potatoes are in that sample diet.

Hope this info helps you out!!

Good Luck!!!!!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
