:blushing:Guys, I'm getting really embarrassed. :blushing:I wish I'd never said anything but, yes, I am sure there are almost as many ways of handling the band as there are people with bands.

I am very interested in this idea that Protein intake needs to be as high as 80g. I know this is often seen as a method of preventing or limiting hair loss - I lost all of mine at one point :thumbup:-which was a shock cos it used to be so long I could sit on it - but it is a heck of a lot quicker in the shower these days:thumbup:. This is one thing that hasn't really been stressed as important by my own surgeon. Like you have said, they are all different and so are we. I am sure we are all doing our best. We all have the same kind of goal - weight loss and maintenance. More power to our elbows:thumbup: however we do it.

Just going to add my 2 cents regarding protien grams consumed per day. I am 21 months out from band surgery. Each and every day I really try to get between 80-100 grams of Protein. I do notice that when I get sloppy about getting enough protein per day, I feel sluggish and tired for a few days in a row. Never thought that it would have that affect on my body.

As far as drinking your protein...what works for one might not work for another. I almost have an admiration for those that CAN drink their protein in the morning. I have NEVER been able to choke down even one Protein Drink. Tried the nose-plugging routine and that didn't even work. I feel if you are drinking your protein to stave off hunger and are staying within a reasonable calorie count for the day....more power to ya!

#1...my band is on the loose side so I have no problem eating 6oz of good Protein for 2 daily meals.

#2...I have 20gr of Protein in a bar each morning for Breakfast and at least one more during the day for a snack. I also make my Snacks high protein/high Fiber cereals...dry or with milk. I am on the low side of the BMI charts due to an extremely high metabolism that hit about a year ago...a few months after reaching goal. My body requires quite a few more calories per day than the norm.

This is why I just read anymore. It is just a lot of confusion of my dr. said your dr. said and I believe this or that.

But I agree with you Ohm and Really I am one on a peaceful journey. We will all make it some faster and some slower. The saying goes we are what we eat is really true. Some days I am an OREO. (this is be funny) I like to help. I have found tunnel vision is our worst enemy. When I say our I say it in a wide wide frame of mind and not pointed in any direction.

I want everyone to reach there goals. Get what they want out of there search to be thin or what they feel is thin or acceptable for them. I for one am no expert and never claimed to be one. I am a FAT man. Oh yes I am. I have lived it all my life. I taken the horse crap comments from the peanut gallery for 40+ years. The skinny bitches and six packed male friends of mine, till you leave the party or turn your back. Comments hurtful unneeded crap.

I only come to this as even in this thread there are unneeded comments among what I see as our own kind. Obese, over weight, FAT yes take it we have heard to from our own Doctor.

Unneeded comments. So are we helping or hurting each other? I think we all have feelings. Why do we attack each other with the keyboard. It is really not needed I think we are all here for the greater good. Helping each other.

Scottyd..went back and re-read this thread. I guess I don't have a clue where the attack came in. I think everyone who posted was just giving their take on the subject...not attacking Ohm...sorry if you read something into it and took something the wrong way.

I'm not implying that anyone is being irresponsible or trying to cheat - I'm just mindful of the risk. I know I would still be able to eat after a liquid meal/shake. If I were to consume a "shake" I might, in a forgetful or ill-advised and unwatchful moment eat something else and end up consuming extra calories- that was really where I was coming from.

Please don't take offence. I'm sorry if I have upset anyone. I'll phrase my responses more carefully next time.:thumbup::cry_smile:

I'm quite 'content' after a shake...as content as if I had eaten a meal so it works for me. Again, though, other than Breakfast when I can't eat solid food, the shakes aren't Meal Replacements. I do still 'eat' my two main meals.

My only point to this thread was to remind people to get their Protein in. If you don't like shakes, other good mid-meal 'snacks' are a couple ounces of hard cheese, a hard boiled egg or anything that focuses on 'protein'.

I guess what I'm hearing- correct me if I'm wrong- is that there is no right or wrong way to do this thing, that a person has to find what works for them, and that it's a matter of experimentation within guidelines.

I'm grateful to hear what does work for people because it gives me ideas for what I can try. It's a lot of Protein we've got to pack in!

Ohm; thats a good observation. I don't do the Protein Shakes my self. I try to get those other Protein foods in. eggs, turkey, fish, etc. and also like your doctor stated, we should be exercising. but every bodies are totally different. What works for one, sure doesn't work for the other. How ever its gonna work, roll on!!!

Like Apples, I aim for 100 g protein/day. This is significantly higher than the 65 g recommended by my surgeon; it's based on research that shows that those who do take in 80-100 g/day have better outcomes in terms of muscle mass maintenance, hair maintenance, and so on.

I certainly hope no one felt attacked, as Scotty has implied! Discussion is ...well, just that. Sharing ideas. I certainly haven't intended to disparage anyone else's approach--just explained, when asked, my rationale for my own. As far as I can tell, that's what everyone else has done, as well.

Jessica....I remember feeling the same way you do. It was during my mushy stage and I was panicing thinking there would be NO WAY to get adequate protein. There are so many ways. I should have listed foods earlier when I responded to your post. Here are just some that have always worked for me:

Beef jerky

roasted/died soynuts

eggs/egg salad

dried edamame

protien bars (read nutrition values carefully and watch the calories)

cottage cheese

baby bell or cheese sticks

Laughing Cow cheeses spread on deli meats

tuna salads

chicken salads

grilled fish or seafood

See? There are many options. If you need cooking ideas, head to the food and Nutrition threads and read through them. Good luck!:thumbup:

It's really not that tough to get in, Anne. It does not happen in the first stages and you just kind of learn to get all your protein in. I would journel my calories and right along beside it, I would do my protein grams and Fiber. There are easier ways to do it (dailyplate, etc.). As you can see from my last post, there are many options.

Elfiepoo, I think you have done great! You have lost 45

pounds since nov. thats more than me and I don't do the

Protein shakes. I do get my 80 or more Protein in though.

You are the only one who knows what your body needs. My

dr also likes for us to drink Protein Shakes if we don't get our

daily protein or if we just want something to keep us full

longer. I havent needed them but on my feel days and the

next day. But in the future if I need them more I see nothing

wrong with them.:thumbup:

      Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
      Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
      A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.

      I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
      Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

      Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
      I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
