No- No to bread, pasta and rice why??

Recommended Posts

Hello.

I know there is a Huge NO- No on eating rice, Pasta or bread. For me... (and I know for most of us) these 3 things are our love to death food.

I am just wondering why we shouldn't have it.

will I be damaging my band if I try some of these??

does any body have these food in their diet now??

Thanks for your help!

I had a forkfull of rice the other day to see if I can tolerate it and it gave me a stomach ache. Other bandsters have said that rice is a no-no because it expands in your pouch.

bread is a no-no because it's Gummy & will get stuck.

Pasta is off limits because it's empty calories, it's way better to eat something more filling with Protein.

I don't have any major restrictions on any of those items--I am allowed to eat them if able to, just don't overdo it. That said, bread often gives me problems so I don't eat much of it. Once in a while I can handle a piece of thin crust pizza, or the crusty edges of restaurant bread, but most of the time bread gets stuck. Pasta is a little better, but I don't have it too often. Rice is fine for me most of the time. I generally try to eat balanced meals, so with that plus the band, I never really eat too much of any particular type of food.< /p>

I was never told to not eat these foods, just to eat in moderation. I discovered quickly, however, that they all got stuck and I'd bring them back up. I do enjoy gluten free pastas, breads, and muffins, though, on occasion. They break down differently and I have never had them get stuck.

Yes, I eat them regularly.

I know everyone is different, so some people DO find that they crave sugar and rubbish when they allow those foods into their diets, and so for them, those foods dont work. Others cant physically eat them. Others still somehow lose weight better without them.

but for the most part, I believe in calories in/calories out. I categorise white bread, rice, and Pasta with Cookies and cakes - foods best eaten very rarely. But wholegrains are a major part of my diet. I also believe that high Protein diets *can* be extremely fatty and unhealthy, although they can be healthy too. But I prefer to eat animal foods very moderately and eat more wholegrains. I feel better that way, I believe I'm eating healthier and I didnt really care that I was a "slow" loser, as I still got to a low BMI. I also stay here pretty effortlessly.

I eat these foods all the time and very rarely have they given me any trouble.

With bread I stick to wholemeal types and I quite often toast it. I eat wraps fairly often.

At dinner I will have a small serve of pasta/rice or potato with my meal.By including these foods I probably take in less fat and calories than someone who doesn't.Think about it - lets say you are eating something like curry - you will find it more satisfying and eat less of the high fat curry if you have a small spoon of rice with it.

I eat rice all the time, in very small portions, along with my indian food, thai food, or a stir fry. I can't eat a big mouthful of rice, but I can eat little bites, with the other foods. I can not eat most breads, except for some indian breads with are very thin. I can't eat most pasta's either.

I still eat carbs, but not like I used to. I'm not going to cut things that I can still eat out, but I am going to eat them in smaller doses. Carbs in moderation are not bad for you.

Tonight I will have a stir fry with tofu, asparagus, broccoli, red pepper, mushroom, mung bean sprouts, Water chestnuts and onion with terriaki sauce and brown rice (all organic).

I have no problems with it and I'm pretty tight right now. Rice & Pasta actually help me to get meat down the band. bread for me needs to be toasted - I usually use the "flat bread" to make sandwiched etc

My nutritionalist gave me a trick for Pasta and rice.

cook them, and then let them sit in a new pan of Water over night. They'll soak up the water and expand as much as they are going to.

Once a month i eat a little bit of Pasta, a little bit of rice and a little bit of potato, not as often will i have a little bit of bread, ate a meal at olive garden last month, had 1/3 a bread stick. Ate at my fav hangout a while ago, had 1/2 a garlic roll. That is all I will do, otherwise it is total Protein and maybe a small salad. At my hangout, i get a side order of 2 meatballs with mozzerella on top and some sauce, it is awesome, I eat for less than $3 and am satisfied.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
