If you are between 5?1 ? 5?3? ? what did your surgeon said your weight should be?

Recommended Posts

I am having a hard time to figure out what should I weigh. I looked at BMI chart and cannot imagine I weigh that little. Right now I am hovering around 150 -152 lbs. My goal is to weigh around 140 lbs; however, according to BMI chart, I am still overweight. By the way, I am 5”2’.

Thanks,

I'm 5'2", and my surgeon's projection was either 132 or 133--I can't remember for sure. I plan to aim significantly lower, but will reconsider as I approach.

Hi-

I'm 5'2 and the surgeon was actually ok with a goal weight of 135 but I was going to aim closer to 130. Anything between 130-135 will be ok with me for the most part.

I'm 153cm which is just a tad over 5'. My surgeon never gave me a goal - I think they are happy once your BMI is in the healthy range. I currently weigh 54kg which is approx 119lb but I'm aiming for 52.5kg 115lb. I am by no means skinny and still have some excess weight around the middle.

I know what you mean about this weight sounding so tiny. I'm 5'3" and my doctor wants me to weight NO MORE than 140 which is the highest weight that will put me in the "normal" BMI range. When I tell folks I still have 83 pounds to lose (my ticker goal is my mini goal--under 200) they gasp and tell me that will be way to thin. Even my husband is afraid I will be too skinny. I weighed more than that in middle school.

With that being said, I asked a girl at work who is 5'2" to be frank with me about her weight (she knows I wasn't asking to be nosy) and she was glad to help. I asked because I think she looks great...not to skinny and certainly not too big. She currently weighs 125 but said that she has put on a few pounds recently (which I can't tell) and that she normally weighs 116-118 and that is where she is comfortable. SO...based on that, if I get down to 140, I think I will look very similar to her since I am an inch taller and much more busty. When I look at it that way, it sounds okay.

I am 5'3" and I could not even wrap my head around 140! It seems soooo far off!! I think the lowest I have ever been was 165 and that was in HS~. If I make it back to that I would be okay. I am in the start of this journey though so we will see where it takes me.

I'm 5'3" and remember my GP suggesting I need to be 125 --I literally laughed at her. I said my body is simply not designed to be that small. My surgeon and I settled on 145-150 as a realistic goal. I could have very well stayed at 150 comfortably; I felt great, looked good, lots of energy, wore a size 8, and didn't feel 'over-weight' despite what my BMI claimed.

I am 5'2...my surgeon said 130 would be great. I am about 140 right now...everyone says I look perfect. I would like to get to 136 (before plastic surgery) just so that I can say I am in a normal BMI. Then after plastic surgery, I hope to be 129 or so...we shall see I guess....

My surgeon didnt say anything about how much I should lose. I can, however, tell you that I started out at 321.6 lbs and now weigh 128 lbs. I look good at this weight – I could probably stand to lose another 8 lbs. My regular doctor said at 5’3 I should weigh between 113 and 140 lbs depending on muscle tone and body type. He also pointed out that I most likely only have 4 – 5 lbs of extra skin (the skin issue is slowly going away by the way), so if I include that, 117 – 144 would be considered healthy.

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣
