I'm new to all of this. Anxious & scared. I have started the process in June 2010 with the testing etc. My tentative date is 9-15 -10. Apparently I had to finish all my pre-testing - (which I met my out of pocket expense for insurance), have all documentation and letter from my primary care physician. Waiting for info to be submitted to insurance for approval. Everyone keep praying & your fingers crossed.
What in the world am I doing continuing this lap band blog without my lap band? I suppose my main purpose is to give everyone insight on my journey. I still can't positively answer the question of whether my band has been worth the weight loss. I can say it made a difference in the amount that I was eating at one time. Although some cheat with the band, I rarely did. My progress has been all me. And a little help from the band. Most of my journey was slow and dull except for the last 3 weeks of my lap band's stay. I was so nauseous and
dry heaves were painful for days and days. After a week in the hospital, band gone and no more sickness. What a way to end a journey. I pray all of you much success. I pray for me continued weight contentment.
Im down another 5 pounds im down 45 total. I feel great and i went from a size 24 to size 18/20.. Im getting my curves back.. I started walking and it feels great except the blisters.. LOL.... I will have updated pictures soon... Im going to get my first fill on aug 30 im so excited. This was really the best decision I ever made!1:thumbup:
Hello everyone, I am just finishing up with all the pre-qualifing appointments for my lap-band surgery. Psycho therapy, nutritionist, labs, sleep studies, etc... Now, I am ready to begin my real journey. I'm calling my surgeon today to make my appt to schedule surgery. I am excited to finally get a little help to what seems to have been a lifetime of fat. I love all your posts and support, I'm sure you'll be hearing from me!!
I do have one question. My Dr. has recommended Slimfast Low Carb or Atkins shakes pre-surgical....Which one is better?? I can't do Chalk!!
You know it is going to be good day when someone tells you that you look good. It's even better really because my BFF Cori (who is not one to sugar coat or to give false praise) told me that my outfit makes me look skinny and another friend (who is a little quicker to compliment) told me that I look great. Woohoo!
I am a big fan of long shirts/short dresses with leggings. Today, I'm wearing a navy blue Simply Vera dress with a black ribbon belt. It's very simple, but I think it is pretty. I've paired it with black leggings and silver encrusted black sandals. I went ahead and took pics. I also added a pic from 7.12.10 in a similar outfit. I think it is fair to say that today's outfit is a little more body skimming than the last one, but I also think there is a difference in the body it is skimming. Ha! (FYI, we took several pictures today but the lighting kept making my boobs look deformed. This one kind of looks like I'm about to fall down, but my boobs looked normal so I went with it.) It's funny how eager I am to take pictures these days...
Jazzercise was great last night. I can really feel my body doing things I was just not able to do before. My lunges are lower for sure and using the 10 pound weights is getting a little easier. NOT EASY, mind you, but easier. I feel strong!
Today is a lunch work out. I'm going to try and run two miles. I'm slow...I will stick to 4mph which will take 30 minutes, but hopefully I can do that!
Tonight is my monthly girls' night Interesting Dinner. It is restaurant week, so we are going fancy! We are headed to a chop house, so I'm going to try steak for the first time post op. I like my steak medium rare, so if I take very small bites and chew, chew, chew, I should be okay. Wish me luck!
Today is week one. And boy was it easy, no pain, no gas, no problems thus far.
I had my post op yesterday and i lost 13lbs in 6 days (my surgery weight was 222 and yesterday it was 209).
I woke up this morning with my monthly friend so i expect maybe 2-3 lbs this week. Or am i dreaming...lets dream.
If anyone is worried about staying with the protein diet, don't. If you take in enough protein and stay busy you will be successful. I will keep you guys posted. Everyone have a great day....
OMG! I'm in Onderland! I haven't seen that number in a while and boy oh boy, what a great feeling! I knew that once my body started to recover from surgery that I would start losing again. I'm so happy today that even my chocolate low carb protein shake is going to taste like a Big Mac, large fries and a diet coke with a straw!
I would like to officially apologize for all the mean things that I said to you and about you last week Lap Band, I truly do love you and appreciate what you have brought to my life! You do your job, and I'll do mine!
Off for a walk...
I have my pre-op class that Dr. Castro requires for folks having surgery all day this coming Thursday. At that time I will have a useless psych eval as I'm already on liquids mostly so what food am I exactly giving up for this surgery? lol I will also see Dr. Castro immediately afterward for my pre-op exam.
The next day on Friday, I get blood and labs done at the hospital then it's nice and quiet until the day of surgery. I have to be there on the 26th at 8am for a 10am surgery!!!
I'm getting nervous and excited all at once!

First of all, thankyou for the comments on my last entry. I know it was a total drainer to read... just having one of those less than positive days.
I went out for approximately 10 hours last night and was feeling pretty good but completely exhausted -- in fact I was out of breath walking from the movie cinema to the carpark.
I woke up today feeling really good. All of the exhaustion meant that I slept really well. My wounds were feeling quite good also. However, I noticed one of my steri-strips had lifted a little and when I looked underneath it, I had an ENORMOUS blister. It is roughly 1cm in diameter in all directions. It is absolutely horrible.
So after freaking out, trying to phone my surgeon whose office is closed, I phoned the hospital and the nurse told me that sometimes, because the strips have no give in them, if there is swelling (or in my case, coughing) it can cause a friction point.
She told me to take the strips off. But to be honest I'm too scared. I removed them from the 2 smaller wounds and found a bloster under one of those and the starting of one under the other. I cut the strip around the initial blister and the other wound seems to be ok. I'm reluctant to pull the strips off the bigger wounds.
I then proceeded to obsessively stare at the blisters for a few hours . Fingers crossed that friction is all it is and they go down now.
On another note, trying to get into some sort of food routine. It worried me how weak I was yesterday. I haven't done too badly with it today and have found I'm able to drink a bit more at a time now which is a welcome relief.
I had a weigh-in this morning and have lost 6.6kg (14.5lbs) in 12 days. Looking forward to more improvements in the coming days .
CRAVING: Cheese, sweet corn and chicken soup, chicken generally, potato, BREAD!
i dont know how you do it.. those of you that have to wade through the insurance paperwork and/or wait six months - jumping through firey hoops. im on a fast track and it's still too long. makes me wonder if i have impulsive tendecies. LOL
just wanted all of you breaking trail for the rest of us .. you are an inspiration. thanks for taking the time to help the rest of us find the courage to hit this flab head-on.
Alright all my pre and post bandsters, I totally felt like I was gonna "go off" on folks today. I am on the 5th day of the solely liquid diet. It's going good, but I am only human. So tell me why when we are watching TV today my 4 daughters and my husband decide to provide unwanted commentary for every fast food commercial. They were like, "Oh! Mom, doesn't that look good?!" After they realized what they were saying, it was too late. I was already planning their burials in my head. Then later in the day, I had the bright idea that I wanted to go to the track and work out. So we get to the track in 95 degree weather (humidity was ridiculous). I am thinking I'm all ganster or something (Obviously that must have been it because like I told ya'll before I am solely on the liquid diet). So I guess I thought I was "it" today. I walked around that joint a few times, walked up and down the stairs leading to the stadium, and then I realized that I did too much. So as we walked back, my husband had the bright idea that we should take the short-cut back (this involved a huge steep hill). I was sooooo freakin exhausted by the time that I got to the top of the hill, I wanted to collapse. However, a lot of kids were there for football, soccer and other stuff. So I maintained my composure, and apparently floated to the van (because I don't remember walking). It was almost like an outer body experience! Okay, I'm a lil' dramatic.. but it was pretty bad. I almost mowed over my 3 yr old as I scraped myself off of the concrete and slid into the van. I was breathing hard and panting. I thought, "Aww sh*#! This must be what it is like to loose consciousness!" Again, I'm being a little extreme.. but you get the picture! Lesson of my story is DO NOT over exert yourself when merely on a liquid diet.. especially in the heat.. Gotta go, I think one of the kids may be swinging from the chandeleir! JK!
Okay, long story. Banded two years ago. Lost 50 pounds. A year ago, started suffereing from indigestion, acid reflux, etc. Then, increasingly painful gall bladder attacks. My GP sent me for an ultrasound and said I was "fine". Eventually, saw lapband surgeon who said I needed gall bladder removed. Two and a half weeks ago- gall bladder out. Surgeon discovered band had slipped (likely all the vomiting from the gall bladder attacks). This week- surgeon fixed slipped band, and also discovered (and fixed) hiatus hernia. Okay, so now back to liquids for 2 weeks, to be followed by mushies, etc. So depressing! Been there, done that! And to top it all off, my mom called to find out how I was, and when I said I was uncomfortable, told me it was my fault because I had opted for the lapband surgery in the first place!
NO AMOUNT OF WORRYING can make things happen, let alone make them happen the way you want. Still, your human nature, bent on trying, rises to the challenge.
What's the remedy for this all-too-common malady? Oswald Chambers, in his classic MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST, wrote," When God brings a time of waiting, and appears to be unresponsive, don't fill it with busyness, just wait.....If you have the slightest doubt, then he is not guiding."
I know it is hard on those of you waiting, waiting for the money for the band, waiting for the surgery, waiting for appointments, waiting to lose the weight, waiting for solid foods. Just waiting in period and a lot of time living with the Band Challenge for the first year is spent waiting. Until I got a grip on this fact, I was over anxious, dissapointed and very irritable. So I got into a little prayer time and read the bible a little more, and decided that it was time to let God lead me through this journey. And now I am happy all the time and enjoying this road ahead of me.
I am working on the next 10 lbs. and so far all is going well. I have 9 lbs to go! I joined the page Sparkpeople.com as suggested by someone on this site. It is helpful so far.
Truly my soul silently waits for God; From Him comes my salvation. Psalm 62:1 NKJV
Slow me down, God, when I am in a hurry and you are not. Help me walk with you, not ahead of you. Teach me to plant the seed and leave the harvest to you. AMEN:smile2:
Well, it's been 3 days since my surgery. I am finally feeling better. Yesterday was terrible. I had gas pains so bad. I was so bloated, I felt 9 months pregnant. I am really sore today around my stomach mostly. I am starting to get hungry also. I would love to eat some chinese. . I will be on full liquids for 2 wks. I cant imagine how I am going to just eat full liquids for 2 wks when I am already starving. I just keep thinking, what have I done??? Am I going to be able to do this? I think most are thinking I wont be able to stick to it. Maybe they are right.
Today marks the half way point of my cross training. I have improved my ability to do push ups, sit ups, and squats. I could barely do 10 when I started and now I am doing 100. But my running has not improved, I am a little disappointed by that. I am considering hiring a running coach for a few pointers.
Here is what I was suppose to do:
Run/Walk with a purpose for 40 minutes, with 5 push ups every 5 minutes.
Rode my bike to the park. .97 mi
Ran 5 min, 6 times 30 min 2.24 mi
30 push ups.
Rode home
I guess I didn't pay attention and see the 40 min time that I was suppose to do. Or I "conveniently" missed it and only worked for 30 min.
OK now its update time. I took measurements when I started and on Sunday.
Weight from:138 to:134
Neck from:13 to:13
Shoulders from:37 3/4 to:37 1/2
Chest from:37 to:36 3/4
Biceps from:11 3/4 to:11 1/2
Forearms from:9 1/2 to:9 1/2
Hips from:37 to:36 1/2
Belly from:36 1/4 to:35 1/2
Waist from:29 to:28 1/2
Thighs from:21 1/2 to:21 1/4
Calves from:14 3/4 to:14 3/4
So the big "loser" is a tie of 1/2 inch off the belly, hips and waist. I will take measurements again at the end.
My consult on July 30th went pretty well, though I did feel that the doctor was kind of pushing gastric bypass. His reasoning was that patients see better results from the bypass than they do with the band. I told him that I wanted the band and I would never get gastric bypass. At the end of the appointment I was given a list of things to do before they would request authorization from my insurance company. I was told that my insurance requires patients to have 6 months of nutrition classes before surgery and they only pay for 3 months, which irritates me. It will be at least January by the time I am banded, if I even get approved. I was really hoping it would be sooner. Back in May I attended a seminar for the program that denied me and the new program is making me attend theirs as well, which seems a little pointless to me, since I have met the doctors and nurses and am pretty well informed about the procedure already. I was planning to attend the August seminar, but so many different things made it so I was unable. And the nutrition classes are on Fridays, which I usually work, I have been scheduled for two so far and have had to reschedule. It seems that I won't be able to get any pre-op things out of the way until I attend the seminar and at least one nutrition class. The next seminar is in September. This is all making me so impatient and frustrated. I want to start working on the new me already!
I'm literally almost crying reading this. Mostly because I'mon this pre-op diet and these last two days have been difficult... but also because I needed this! Thank you! Congrats! And a BIG congrats on quitting smoking a second time! It was hard enough to do it once... So - when I say BIG congrats... I mean BIIIIIG congrats! ❤️
