So, I make cakes for a living, can anyone relate?

Recommended Posts

Hi, I had the Gastric Sleeve op on Aug 5 2016. So far I'm very happy with it, recovery has been good and I'm down 10.7 kgs so far. My issue is I make special occasions cakes, Cookies and sweets for a living. Does anyone else work in a (risky for us) food related industry?

OMG, I couldn't do it. Cake was always my downfall, especially the frosting. I wish you well.

Lol! Yeah, I know what you mean, the good thing for me is that once I know how to make a particular sweet, I tend to lose my craving for it because I know I can always just make some for myself :-) . I had an order last week for a mixed vanilla choc sponge with choc buttercream and I was basically chasing my family around the kitchen to get them to taste test. First week of sept will be difficult as I have mixed orders for cake, cupcakes and Cookies.... we'll see how it goes. All the best :-)

Somehow you have to let work be work and to completely disassociate with the consumption of such stuff.

I don't cook for a living, but I do it on my days off.

I don't eat most of the things I cook for my family, but still enjoy making it for them.

You can do it.....just gotta find a way to flip that "off" switch.

Just pretend you are pumping out portable toilets while you are working.

I make specialty cakes on the side. I have done many since surgery 11 months ago. I am fortunate in that the more I make it the less I want it. I have taken a taste since surgery and it just makes my stomach hurt now.

For me this use to be an issue. I make cakes and Cookies for my kids. They also now make cakes and cookies. I made a batch of decadent fudge/caramel/chip cookies. I ate two and was sick for hours. I can now cook without eating as the pain set me free.

Lol! It's not been as bad as I thought it would be, I do have to taste test to make sure everything is up to standard but I'm not getting my old cravings of having a whole cupcake or cake slice. I think that the "grazing" every 2-3 hours also helps since I'm not getting the energy crash I used to get around four in the afternoon where I would have to hunt down anything with sugar. I am getting more salty food cravings hough.

Not sure if you are low carbing but when you are low carbing you crave/need more salt. My body go nuts for salt.

Congrats on your success so far.

I have made pizza for a living for the last 20 years. Thankfully, it hasn't been a craving after surgery. I still despise it

Yikes, I don't think I could do that. hehe

I'm not into sweets at all but pizza is another thing all together. I like it so much that I always make those low carb cauliflower pizzas. Lifesaver for my cravings.

I sell chicken for a living so yes, I can relate. Most of what I sell is breaded, deep fried bits of yumminess so I'm expecting it to be a bit challenging. I have a lapband currently but will be revising to VSG as soon as approved.

The toughest part for me is when I participate in trade shows but I've been doing it for over six years with the band.

I'm a confectioner, so can totally relate... I'm banded at the moment but hope to be converted to a Sleeve in the next few months. It is hard, being surrounded by sweets and needing to know they're up to scratch, but I don't eat nearly as much as I used to and hope that only gets better with my sleeve.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
