Give your opinion to tell or not

I am not telling anyone about my upcoming RNY next week. Only my husband and children know I am doing this and one close friend. I have realized I have an addition to sugar. My husband says I need to be open about it to help me overcome.

Hi, I too have an addiction to sugary, fatty foods. When I made the decision to hav emy surgery I decided not to tell anyone but my hubby and my neighbor who had the surgery in October 2013. My reason for this is based on the reaction i see among freinds and family members who have had the surgery and the opinion that the surgery is the easy way out. We both know that's not true so to avoid this negativity so I can concentrate on me I'm not telling anyone else. My way of getting the additional support that my neighbor and hubby may not be able to provide is this site and I joined over eaters anynomous. I'm getting support with my decision to have the surgery from my best friend, my hubby and my neighbor, plus I'm getting the emotional and psychological support I need to help me understand my addiction to foods that are bad for me and how to overcome come it. I hope this helps you somewhat for me it has made my network of support much wider.

I used To think the same way until a friend of mine that I respect very much told me she had gone through surgery herself. After that I begin edu sting myself, and after no longer being able to run like I used to I decided to go ahead and do it myself as well.

I am 3 weeks post surgery and in the beginning I protected the info like top secret, only my mom knew. Then I told anyone. My success will depend on me and it might show who your real friends are. Most that I know are just happy for me because my diabetes has been resolved, completely gone from the surgery. Maybe just tell who you're comfortable with, but there's going to be jealous types anyhow once you've reached your goal, just smile and go shopping for those smaller clothes if anyone says anything b*tchy.

I have told a few selective co-workers and a couple close friends at my kid's school and my hubs/kids/ parents. that's it.

I don't plan on telling anyone else including my siblings, cousins, and other co-workers.

After surgery when my loss is very obvious, if I am asked I won't deny it but also won't go into great detail with anybody that I didn't tell pre-op.

It is a very personal decision and a tough one. Most people don't understand ALL that is REALLY involved and just declare WLS the 'easy way out'.

I also decided early on that this is MY journey and I don't need any negative comments, input or otherwise.

I dont tell people. I tried being honest about why I was going to the doctor so regular but I quickly learned to stop sharing. I had someone tell me that their friend died because she had it. Then someone else that was like all your hair is going to fall out or people will say you are going to be sick all the time. So I have stopped telling anyone. When I was asked about what surgery im going on leave from work for I just said I have some stomach issues they will be looking at. I have to stay focused & in order to do that I cant have people speaking negative about my choice. So my support comes from this group and my husband and children.

Thank you all for your answers. My husband I guess looks at having accountability for my addiction to sugars and carbohydrates

I decided to tell my coworkers because it will be hard to hide it once I start losing. The only people not supportive were the thin ones. I really debated about this Just in case I started to regain weight but maybe that will be a motivator. I just had my surgery April 15th, 2014

I told my boss, because obviously I will need the time off, and a couple of people I work closely with daily. My own secretary doesn't even know and I don't plan to tell her.

She held a very strong opinion when other people in our office had it done and said "I just don't understand, if you can have the willpower to stick to the pre-op diet then why can't you just diet your way thin?"......see, that's why i'm not telling her...enough said.

If you go in and tell your hr person and boss that u will be out for surgery, is it legal for them to ask you what it's for?

I told my close friends at work and my boss who had lap band surgery. But I kept it really quite. So far it's worked out really well. I think most people know, but have also figured out I don't really want to talk about it. People that I didn't tell have just asked me how I'm doing and i tell them I'm doing well.

Jessb414 this is protected by HIPPA the problem thy I had was that out HR person is not knowledgeable of the law and wanted to force me to go into FMLA therefore stopping my benefits, not completely legal but there were some things they could pull back

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
