When did people start noticing your weight loss?

Recommended Posts

I live about 2 hours away from my family. I went to see them last month but no one ever said that they noticed I was losing weight (well except my aunt who notices EVERYTHING!) but this past weekend I went to visit them and finally people are starting to notice. My grandma said "Honey are losing weight? I just noticed your face is pretty" lmao!! and my mom said "whatever you're doing keep it up because its working". No one came out and asked me how I am losing weight though but my aunt did ask me how much I lost and I didn't tell her. Do you guys answers those types of questions? I am no where near my goal but it still feels good to know people are starting to notice the weight coming off. :)

Ok, so it took 70 pounds to lose before people started to notice my weight loss (or if they noticed before they didn't say anything). How much did you lose before people started to notice? Oh and no one knows about the surgery except my husband.

After I'd lost ~45 pounds, folks--my hairdresser, the post office workers, a neighbor, a friend I hadn't seen in a while--noticed. I saw my hairdresser when I'd lost 30 pounds, but, nothing. Also, it's been winter, so I've been mostly covered up, or not in the yard much, or walking the subdivision, etc. They don't know of the WLS, either; I'm "eating a lot of Protein."

I've decided that if someone asks the specific question, "Did you have WLS?" I'll tell them. But if it's "what are you doing?" Right now, I'm "doing" lots of Protein, so that'll be my answer, unless I feel I want them to know. (If it's someone fat, I might tell them of the WLS 'cuz they might be thinking about it.)

Congratulations on your 70 pounds!! Wow.

I lost 33lbs on my own before I began my pre op diet and had surgery. Not many people noticed. I think it was when I got around 50lbs down that folks really started to take notice and comment a lot. I am now down about 84lbs and it I the craziest thing, no one believes I still have as much to go as I do!!! I don't like to give numbers to them, not yet. ( On here is different, I feel less judgment.) But when I say I am not quite halfway to goal people are always shocked. I guess even they cannot imagine me at a truly healthy weight. I do know that I carry my weight in a way that is a bit deceiving, I have been told this a lot. ( I guess that is a good thing?) Right now I weigh 232lbs and my goal is 140lbs. If folks think I look good now, I can't imagine what they might think once I hit "onederland" and lower. I will probably be told I am TOO skinny!!! What a laugh!

I am down 49 lbs and only a handful of people have noticed. Its a little disappointing but keeps me motivated.

That's about the same for me. Took quite a bit for others to notice, but once they all did notice, the questions never stop.

It depends on how I dress too, living in upper Midwest, ive usually got layers on for cold so im able hide it still.

People started noticing on me fast. I always lose from the face down, and I think being the face the first place people look it's the most noticeable. I think it was around 50 Lbs gone that I was getting comments all day long.

I lost about 20 pounds in the process of waiting for surgery, and people noticed then, but I think like @@LilMissDiva Irene, my face and neck thin out quickly.

I'm only a little over a week out from surgery but haven't really seen anyone since I started the pre-op diet (I've been a hermit!), so I'm not sure if people will notice or not. I'm down about 22 pounds since the start of the pre-op diet.

It looks like you and I both started around the same weight. I would say it was between 40-50 pounds lost when people really started to notice. I still get comments almost daily from people at work and church. It doesn't get old....lol. I answer the questions if they are from people I'm comfortable with, or not if not. It really is a case by case basis, although no one at works knows I had surgery, only my close friends and family.

People started noticing about 20 but now at 50, my clothes are big and my face has shrunk. I measured the other night and my neck went from 19 to 15. I'm being very evasive about questions. I answer the how much weight question. And I say, "no carbs, no sugar, small portions, low calories" to the "what are you doing". None of that's untrue. I do the quick "thanks" and change the subject too.

Honestly, I think people notice long before they say anything. I think they wait until it's pretty obvious before they say anything. I think they consider it safer that way.

I think that it varies for everybody. I was 460 before the VSG surgery December 2011. A week after surgery (and a week of only yogurt and Protein shakes) I could see the change. Over 6 months 80 came off but went down from wearing 6x to 2x. So I recommend that people check body fat content as well as the scale. Reshaping the body sounds like a cop out when the scale as stops moving but it is part of the process.

No one ever really notices. In some ways it's a relief but in other ways I guess it would be nice to have someone think "wow"

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
