slow progress- need advice

This is my first visit to the site. It looks great.

I had surgery about 3 1/3 mo ago. I have only lost 15 lds. I am so discouraged and frustrated. I am keeping a food diary and am staying between 150 calories right after the fill to 8-900 before a fill. I've only gone over 1,000 cal. twice.

Anyone out there help?:thumbup:

Are you filling up on lean Proteins? That is what makes all the difference for me. I can be a bit of a carboholic and I found once I started eating my Protein first and a couple bites of my side dishes it really made a difference.

Don't get discouraged, I am right there with you! I am almost 3 months post op and have only lost around 15lbs myself. I have had one fill so far, and at the fill my doctor filpped out and said he couldn't understand why I wasn't losing. It really pissed me off, I am doing everything I can and the weight just isn't coming off. I eat about 1200 calories a day, I am going to have to try and cut back to 1000 and see if that helps. I go to the gym every other day... I just don't get it, BUT we can not get down on ourselves. We have got to believe that this is going to work for us.

Do you have a nutritionist to meet with? It actually sounds like your not getting enough calories in ... going under the required intake might slow down weight loss but still losing 15 lbs is an amazing success. I would suggest maybe adding a Protein shake into the equation to bump up your intake and see if that helps.

Hi Jill,

Congrats on losing 15lbs that is awesome!!! I am right there with you at about 3 1/2 months out and have only lost 22lbs. I have to agree with Nkara about adding in a Protein shake. Protein is the key here once I started to focus on Proteins first the weight has started coming off. Try to get at least 70g a day and if its 7pm and you havent made it...drink that Protein Shake. Also, carbs can be your worst enemy but if you must try sticking to the whole wheat ones and always eat those last...sometimes you will be too full to eat them. Good Luck!!! Remember 15lbs gone and never coming back ;-).

Thats to all. I think you may be right about Protein. most lean cuisines and such I take for lunch are mostly carbs. I have a hard time getting enough protein. Just not a big meat eater. I will try to focus on that more. I guess I feel like others are making more progress. Thanks everyone. This site is going to be great!

A lot of people would give their left eye to lose 15 lbs. Don't sell yourself short. You're moving in the right direction.

Are you drinking 48 - 64 ounces of Water a day? This is needed to cleanse your body of the waste from the calories burned.

You also didn't mention how many calories you are burning. How much exercise are you getting?

Jill, everyone seems to have given you great advise. Vary your calories....900 one day, 1000 the next, and up to 1200 then back down. Sometimes our bodies get used to the routine and just stays where it is. I'm losing very slowly now too.....only about 24 since banding and most of that was the 3 weeks after surgery. I'm terrible about sticking to a "diet" so I know where my issues are, but hey I still loose 2 or 3 pounds a month and it's going down. Be patient and learn to work with your band.

I also agree with making sure you get in enough Water and Protein.

If you are always staying under 1,000 calories and have been doing so for 3 1/2 months, it sounds like it might be too few calories for you and you may want to bump it up 100-200 calories a day for a week and see what happens. Your body may be in starvation mode and holding on to every calorie.

Exercise also really helps. If you have not built it into your day yet, you may want to do so. Even if it is only a 30 minute walk around the block, every little bit helps.

Last but not least, 15 pounds may not seem like much but it is still a little over 1 pound a week. This is a reasonable rate of loss and within range of the 1-2 pounds a week that is considered optimal for healthy weight loss.

Have you considered the Bodybugg? It's an armband that calculates how many calories you are burning. You upload that data to their website daily along with everything you have eaten. It does the math for you.

With this knowledge, you will know how much more you have to exercise or how much less to eat.

Counting inbound calories is just a guessing game unless you know how many you are burning.

It also has diet and exercise plans.

I have had mine for about a month and lost 28 pounds so far. I haven't been hungry and am not even banded yet.

Unfortunately, it is not that cheap. It's about $250.

Thanks so much- never heard of bodybugg. I'm going to look into it. Thanks to everyone for being so positive. I've read some posts that are much too harsh. You guys are great.

I am also struggling wtih protien, and I find "Designer Whey" a good resource. It is only 100 calories per scoop and it offers 18grams per scoop, you mix it with 3 oz of Water, so the serving size it right...

Jill, I am 4 months post op and haven't lost a pound so you are doing much much better than me. Slow progress is better than no progress at all. I know my issues are not enough restriction, too much carbs, less Protein and not enough exercise and I have to just work on those.

If you have trouble eating meat, try eating Beans. You can spice them up with onions, tomatoes, cilantro, jalapenos.

Also, I swear by the Greek yogurts. The Fage-0 has 20 gr of Protein. Sweeten it with some Splenda and vanilla extract, it tastes great with a little granola for some crunch.

Try adding some whey Protein Powder to your food to help boost the Protein.< /p>

      Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs. 
      I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm. 
      I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order. 
      My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

      Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
      Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
      A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.

      I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
      Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

      Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
      I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
