As others have said, there is no way the hospital will release you without someone to drive you home. After surgery, you'll see why - you're just way too loopy to be driving.

The least expensive way is probably to find a hotel near the hospital. You'll want to check-in before your surgery (make sure they will let you check-in early - explain your situation). Take a cab to the hotel from the hospital and have someone pick you up the day after.

If you have friends . . . ask them. Most people are so happy to help friends (and strangers) in need.

But...seriously.....if my son (he's 20) was having surgery, there is no way I wouldn't be there. No. Way.

Find a hotel; find a hostel; hire a limo; stay in the hospital (but be prepared for the extra charges)....under no circumstances drive yourself!! Even if you think you can (and I would be surprised if you did) you CANNOT...it's like someone who has been drinking who thinks they can drive - tragic consequences..

Ok I went to the hospital for some tests preop and the gave me check in instructions for the surgery day.. clearly on the paper I was given I stated my surgery would be canceled if there was not an adult to pick me up ... and that I should not be alone the first 24 hrs in case of any complications.

is there someone from your church or something that can pick you up ???

Okay, I talked to my mom, she said she could take me home, but she just won't be there for me that weekend, two days later.

I'm going to push to have my surgery on a Thursday, so I can only take a friday away from class and go back Monday.

But I just realized that I won't be able to eat anything at my birthday party. so I may just not order any food like I was going to! Sorry people attending! haha. If I can't eat I'm not about to order a 4 foot sub, cheese tray, and 28 cupcake cupcake cake! I don't want to have all this food to look at and smell but can't eat!

I'm glad you got the transportation worked out. I hated thinking of you being alone after your surgery.

As for your bday - I'm sure it will be wonderful without the food. Invite some people over, play games, watch a movie, and Celebrate starting a new healthier year.

xo

I'm so glad this is working out for you! For several days after my surgery all I even wanted was small sips of cold liquid anyway. Get the sub for your guests anyway and I hope you have a Happy Birthday!

I am so happy that your mom is going to be there with you - I have been very worried about you and how you were going to manage. If your mom is not going to be around after the first 48 hours, I am thinking you will be ok, since then you will be sort of settling into a "routine" of sorts, and should be feeling better compared to right after your surgery.

As far as your birthday - there is plenty to Celebrate without food being the centerpiece! You will be able to enjoy your friends and family, after all this is a celebration of your life!

All the best to you!

Joanne

I may be late on this but have you considered possibly renting a hotel room near by the hospital and taking a cab there - I was fortunate and didn't have any pain so I was up and out the day after surgery... You could drive yourself home the following day or stay two nights at the hotel... Just a thought

I suggest parking your car somewhere near the hospital that's 24hrs like a walgreens, a bar, or a Walmart so it won't get towed and have your cab take you from there to the hospital and back. It saves you the money of an hour cab ride and the hospital won't give you a hard time. Just make sure you don't take pain meds the day you go home. I was pretty sore but didn't need the meds and doubt you will either. Be sure to have tylenol ready

Good luck to ya!

What !?!? That would be VERY irresponsible. I can't believe anyone would suggest it. The general anesthesia stays in your body for a long time. It would be as bad, if not worse, than driving drunk. You could easily kill yourself or someone else and you wouldn't even know what was happening. This is the very reason hospitals make sure you have an adult pick you up after surgery. In my case, they made my husband promise not to leave me alone for 24 hours. A cab driver is not an acceptable person to release you to and I doubt the hospital will do it.

So I decided I'm going to go ahead and get all the food for my party. It's kind of wrong to invite all these people to a birthday party and not let them eat.

When's your surgery? Can you have the party before your surgery? If not, the others are probably right, you likely won't want food if it's soon after your surgery.

I am so glad you have a ride home! I had my surgery on Monday and I don't even remember getting out of the hospital or my dad driving me home...I was soo loopy. I only woke up at 1:30 am finally aware of everything.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
