Ya so I'm in soft foods and I had tortilla chips with a bean dip the other day and I am fine because I chew very well. Why is it so important to have soft foods?

Is it okay if you chew well. I also have had chicken, but it was pretty mushy.

I dunno I have just been struggling with the soft food thing and I needed a break. i hope i didn't mess anything up. I had surgery Aug. 28th...and I am on regular foods next week sometime. I just want some advise I guess.

The main reason for eating restrictions is to give your stomach a break on working so hard to digest, the way I understand it. It's not about how well you chew, it's about going with foods that your stomach won't have to WORK to process.

Soups and liquids don't require nearly as much digesting work as solids, even well-chewed ones.

I was VERY hungry a few days after surgery and I called my doctor and the office told me I could go with oyster crackers. To let them pretty much dissolve in my mouth. That carried me over until I got to mushy foods.

I'm not opposed to occasionally breaking or stretching a rule but I think it's important to try to understand WHY the rule is there before you choose which if any to break or how far to push/stretch.

Good luck.

Amy -

When you eat "regular" foods your stomach has to churn to digest them - much like a washing machine does. (I'm borrowing from Restless Monkey here.) That churning could cause the sutures that hold your band in place to come undone, which can result in the band slipping.

The reason for the slow progression to solid foods is to allow your band to heal in place. Do your best to follow your doc's instructions I know it's hard but you can do it!! This is only for a short period of time (even though it seems forever) and before you know it you'll be past it and back to regular foods.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
