What is the pre-op psych eval about?

Recommended Posts

Hi! I am scheduled for my pre-op psych eval on Wednesday 8/26 and was wondering what kinds of questions do they ask and what is the goal of the "session"? I know everyone probably has a variation, but I was curious of what was in store for me!

Thanks everyone!:(

I can only comment on my experience with the psych eval and it was very postitive. He asked about my support network of friends or family and about my personal feelings about obesity. He asked me to recite the exact moment I had the epiphany and made up my mind to go through with it. Basic stuff about how I felt about the process in general. He offered to see me when or if I ever felt the need for care.

It does depend. I had to answer what seemed like reams of questions (part of the MMPI) and then had a quick consult "So you just can't lose weight" me: "No, I can lose, but I can't keep it off" that kind of thing. "Do you drink to excess?" me "Not anymore, not since my wild misspent youth. Now I get too sleepy" LOL It does really vary widely.

I just had mine 2 days ago. My psychologist has had a band for 9 years and lost 160lbs!!! She was great. Mainly looking to make sure I didn't have underlying depression, addictions and had some sort of support network. I did fill out an 8 pg questionnaire first which was a bit weird...pretty over the top questions. Good luck!

Mine was all of the above.

She asked questions about my eating habits, drinking, drugs, meds, past diets, why I thought they didn't work, where I think I fail during dieting, what my stressers are, how I deal with them, what is my support system, etc.

Mine was positive.

I stressed a bit about it, feeling like this person thinks she can reject or approve me for this after all I've been through? lol I was silly.

She too, has the lap band and admitted she wasn't the best candidate for the surgery.

What she did do was to question me if I was prepared for the change other people were going to make. Sure there is positive change (which I expected) but also, when one spouse (in my case) or friend even, becomes thinner and starts to get noticed more by the opposite sex- jealousy can be a factor. I was totally not thinking that way at all. I believe I now have a better understanding of how my relationships may change and how to better approach it if it does.

We covered mental health. I have been on an antidepressant that I see my primary doc for on a regular basis- so no problem there.

The one thing that caught me off guard was that she asked me what was my ideal weight, what did I want to get down to? I hadn't thought of how much weight I wanted to loose, I just wanted to fit into a size 10-14 and be happy. That's what I told her and that was fine.

I guess by sharing all of this with you I'm telling you that it was not a test for me, just sitting down talking about where I am at, fed up of failed diet attempts, and where I want to go.

I was scared but it wasn't bad at all.

I am so sorry to hear that! I have been worried about how mine went. I guess you never know. A friend of mine at work-her brother had rny and had to go to several sessions before they gave him the green light. I guess we can just take this time to work on all of oureslves instead of just the physical....mind-body-spirit to ensure ultimate success! Keep your head up.....

My thing is, what is it that they fail you on? I mean I am a pretty positive person in general, optimistic even, I have a good outlook on life, but I have come to the point where I am not happy in my body any more. I don't want to speak the honest truth to them and have them fail me when I know that after years of dieting and exercising and not being able to lose weight/keep the weight off I need the band to help me lose the weight finally.

You know, I have no idea. It seems people have such vast differences as to what they had to do in each of their "sessions" it seems some have had a comprehensive in depth "exam" while others just "chatted" for 15 minutes or so. I have no clue as to what it is that they are looking for. I have yet to hear about mine, so I guess we will see!

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
