Excited Newbie! Surgery date June 18, 2009

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone!

I have been following this forum for quite a while and now would like to finally introduce myself. I am 30 years old, 5'1, and weigh 230 pounds. My highest weight was 250 which was in August 2008 and 9 months pregnant and my lowest was 130 which was about ummm let's see--maybe 8 years ago. I have a surgery date of June 18th and I am soo excited!!

I haven't been banded yet and I am already addicted to this board because of the motivation, inspiration, and wonderful information through out! Great group of people.

Just wanted to stop through and say "thanks" to my new family for the inspiration you have provided and "many thanks" for the future threads because I know I will be relying on this board to help me through my journey...

Take care and much success to everyone on their journey!

Good luck to you! I guess I'm like a super-newbie. I just decided to have Lap Band surgery. Had my first consult with the surgeon and got the go ahead from the clinic. I still have to do 3 months of supervised diet & exercise to satisfy the insurance requirements. Please keep posting so we can Celebrate your accomplishments!

Thanks for the encouragement. I would have had surgery sooner but I had to get the CPAP machine and I have to be on that 2wks prior to surgery. I go in for Pre-Op nursing, pre-op nutrition class#3, and pre-op consult with surgeon on Tuesday, June 2nd. My pre-op with the hospital is on June 16th. Things seem to be picking up pretty quick now and I am looking forward to the NEW me!!:)

I am kind of a newbie. I started way back in 2006. I went to a seminar, I got my consult but found out my insurance wouldn't cover it and the price was over 15,000 and I just could not afford it at the time. In 2008 I got a job overseas and could now afford it but I had no vacation time as a new hire. This year I have the money, I have the time and it's actually cheaper for me to do it over here than in the States(yes I know the risks involved with it, no preaching). This September is when I am getting it done. I finally have a date! I am so very excited and just wanted to share my excitement. Yeah!

Hi Questions09-

Luckily I didn't have to do the 3 month supervised diet. In actuality, my insurance didn't require much of anything as far as requirements- their only criteria were 18yrs of age, BMI of 35.5 with 1 co-morbidities or BMI of 40, and a psych evaluation.

The only thing left for me to take care of is the cardiac clearance and I am going to my primary doctor Tuesday morning to get that taken care of.

Whew! It;s becoming 'real' as the date gets closer. Be sure to keep us posted and best of luck in your process!

Hey there! Congrats on your banding date! I was banded June 20,2008. I wanted to let you know that, it was the best thing I have EVER done for myself! I have lost 135 pounds in that time. It seems just yesterday I was waiting to be banded like you and now here i am almost a year later looking like an entirely different person! Good luck on your journey and if you need an tips or help don't hesitate to contact me!

Hi! Congrats on your surgery date! How exciting! I too am 5'1 and 230 (about 6 years older than you though). May I ask how much you'd like to lose? I'm hoping and praying for 80 to 90 lbs, but I have been reading that the average results are about 50% of the weight overage? I'm trying to figure out if that is the case with 'real' people though LOL

I'm so glad I found this board. Even though I have a great support system, none of them are going through it with me. To have a whole group of people going through the same thing to chat with is just such a blessing!

Lots of luck on the surgery!!!

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
