Hi all. I'm feeling a little frustrated this morning because I feel so tired. I've been banded 16 days and have advanced to mushies, but have cheated with some well-chewed soft foods as well. I went back to work Thursday night 7p-7a and went for my post-op appointment after work. I'm a nurse and the hospital was VERY busy. I barely got time to drink any Water let alone find twenty spare minutes to sit and have a little meal. I felt washed out and deflated by morning so I had the surgeon give me another week off.

I'm drinking 2-3 Unjury shakes per day and sticking to high Protein mushies like refried Beans and Greek yogurt. I took some B Vitamins this morning, but I still feel like I could take a nap. Has anyone had experience with this? Thanks.

My surgery was May 18th. My main problem is walking my dog, cause she needs alot of exercise. I am ok with walking a little, but not when she pulls me. I take her to a dog beach in the morning to do about 2-3 miles of walking. I am pretty pooped after that and can't do any more exercise the rest of the day. I figure this is because there is very little caloric intake. I am supposed to just be on Clear Liquids for the first week, but have started adding in pureed foods and Soup because I was tired of juice and broth.< /p>

Hey,

Being tired is normal - also with your profession it will kick your butt. You have to realize that you did have surgery and your body is adjusting to the change of food intake also. But you really need to follow the program on the stages. It is this healing time that will help with ensuring that your band will stay in place (by allowing it not to be working digesting) during this early recovery time.

With your job, it will be all about planning.. I know it is easier said than done. However, you have invested the $$ and the time for the surgery - give yourself the care you deserve.

I know when i had my surgery 2 yrs and 135#s ago, it was 2-3 months before i was back up to par.

Sounds like you will have to look for things that have high protien in small quanities so you can grab and go. Which for me is was part of my wt problem to begin with. Eating on the run/drive/walk/sitting LOL...

Just know that you will begin to have MORE energy than you had before but now your body is recovering.

Good Luck!

I'm a nurse too, I was out of work nearly 8 wks, due to dehydration. I am 3 months out and still have not regained all my energy. Part of it as you know is the recovery from anesthesia, it can take weeks. Your energy level is lower, less food source, and calories. It will get better, just hang in there. You may need even longer than another week!! Everyone is different...you have a job that is physically demanding..be good to yourself. :wink2:

Thanks for the encouragement. I'm feeling better this morning. I think I was probably dehydrated. I spent the weekend forcing fluids and eating pure Protein mushies and I feel more energy today. I have to come up with some small power foods for work nights and make sure I keep my water bottle on my computer cart. Otherwise, I'll have to push an IV pole along with me on my rounds. LOL I've got two more days to rest and then I'll be trying it again. Wish me luck.

One of the things I learned from my experience is that you have to have a Water bottle or other drink by you all the time, put in on your computer on wheels. Your job is to drink. Start thinking about Protein Shakes too..ask about them when you go for follow up. If it turns out to be too hard..you need to stay out of work. Our job is not a desk job, you need to be 100%. Be good to yourself, you deserve it.

You just had a surgery not even 3 weeks ago, you are working 12 hour shifts, on your feet, you are still carrying a lot of weight, and you wonder why you are drained?? You would have to be superwoman!!! You must have been quite tired with that schedule before the surgery. You are doing what is most important in getting as much Protein in as you can. Try to keep the ready to drink protein at work (really cold) and sip those along with your Water. I like the Muscle Milk lite RTD shakes and still drink at least one every day. Try to rest when you can and it will get better.......especially when all the pounds start melting off in a few months. You'll have lots more energy and it will all be so worth it!!!

If you go to bariatricschoice.com you will find a lot of high protein Snacks, some which you will be able to have now like puddings, and some you will have to wait until later. Check out the nutritional info. My nutritionist says to make sure the protein content is always higher than the sugar and of course I look at the calorie count. They have many high protein snacks you could carry at work. My favorites are the cinnamon crisp bars and the Chef Jays protein Puffs. I use both frequently. Also the meat sticks are surprisingly tasty!! Their items are expensive so I started googling and found them cheaper elsewhere, but initially tried things on there. The Peanut Butter chocolate bars really satisfy cravings too! All of those snacks are high in protein.

I'm impressed that you are walking that far after just one week!! Sounds like you are doing well!

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
