Optifast, medifast, other protein shakes...so many!

Recommended Posts

I am familiar with medifast, but haven't heard of Optifast before. Where do you get their shakes?

What kind of Protein Shakes do people reccommend?

I also posted this link in the pre-op section as I haven't had surgery yet (May 18th!), but I want to stock up on something ahead of time so I am prepared.

Thanks!

I had Opifast (TX) and I liked the taste. I would add a sweet n' low and flavors like cinnamon, vanilla extract.... You do have to purchase it form a doctor though.

I enjoy Boost Glucose control 16 grams of Protein and very little sugar. Make sure you get the Glucose control version. I've had one every day for months now.

My doctors recommended Opti-fast, but also gave me a list. I tried the EAS brand, and it was too watery. I finally went with Atkins Advantage shakes. I liked them so much I still drink them for Breakfast. If you try them, get the Dark chocolate Royale, and the Mocha Latte. They taste the best.

Where do you buy them? I looked on the website with the intention of trying the dark chocolate, but it Shipping and handling makes if 300% over the cost of the product itself.

I have tried GNC Brand (forget the exact name), Wal-Mart’s Brand Body Fortress, & EAS brand of Protein powders and out of the three I would have to say I liked the EAS the best. All three are easily available at GNC or Wal-Mart. EAS has 120 calories, 2g fat, 2g carbs, 1g sugar, & 23g Protein. I always get vanilla as I doctor my shakes up. The EAS tastes great to me.

Here are some of the Protein shake recopies you can try…

Vanilla Protein powder w/ 8oz skim milk, 1 tsp Peanut Butter, 1/2 tsp sugar free choc Syrup. Blend in blender. OMG, taste like Reeses Peanut Butter cups. You have to try it.

Or

Vanilla Protein Powder w/ 8 oz skim milk, 1 tbsp of sf cheesecake pudding mix, 3 frozen strawberries (I keep bags of frozen fruit in hand). Blend in blender. Great also, tastes like strawberry cheesecake.

If you prefer powders, unjury is a good brand to try. Comes in plain (you can mix in other stuff), vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, and chicken Soup (tastes like chicken broth). Go to unjury.com to order.

If you like grab and go ready to drink, I use Worldwide Protein shakes. On the can it says not for weight loss, Protein supplement only, but I think that is because they don't want you to use it as a liquid meal. A lot of body builders use it. It packs 35g protein in a can. You can get it at GNC, but they are the priciest ($2.99 can) and they only carry Vanilla and chocolate. Cheapest is Trader Joe's at $2.29 a can, again only the two flavors, and they carry a 29g protein size for $1.69 each, again in the two flavors. The best place to get them is Vitamin Shoppe. They only carry the 35's, but in all flavors (Vanilla, Chocolate, strawberry, banana Cream, and Cookies n' Cream-tastes like liquid Oreos). Individually they cost $2.79 each, but if you buy a 12 pack case they are $27.99 or about $2.33 each. You can find them online too at vitaminshoppe.com. They have free shipping for orders over $99, and when you buy from them, online or in stores, you earn reward points that get you coupons for $ off future purchases. While I didn't want to spend quite so much, I wanted free shipping, and I had a coupon for $20 off $100 purchase. I bought enough so the amount didn't drop below $100 after the coupon came off, so I got that plus free shipping. That just about paid for an entire 12 pack, so it was worth it. And I drink one almost every day, so they won't go to waste. They run about 160-170 calories, 1g fat(0.5 sat fat), 4g carbs, 1g sugar, 5mg cholesterol, 150mg sodium, 210mg potassium, and 35g protein.

I'm sorry if I sound like I work for them. I don't. I just really like them.

You should work for them! I just had to order a 12 pack to try!! Hope I like it.

I have about 12 open cans of various Protein powder brands. If anyone would like to try them, email me, I will tell you what kinds I have, and I will send them for just the cost of postage. I wasted so much money! I would love to see someone get use of them. None are over 3-4 months old.

I have only tried one, but it is GREAT. BNC Lean Dessert. I've had the whipped vanilla and the chocolate, blended with skim milk and ice with no artificial sweetners (don't like the taste of them at all) and only has 2g sugar. Best price on vitacost.com $15 per 1.3 lb container, i don't know if that's really expensive, but I know it can't be anymore expensive than the food I would normally eat instead of it, and I love the taste so it's worth it! :glare:

I get the Atkins shakes at Wal-mart. They're cheaper there. Also, CVS, Walgreen's Sav-on...alot of pharmacies have them. The Wal-mart in my town doesn't carry the Mocha Latte so I have to go to the next town to get them. I buy 2-3 weeks worth when I go. You might be able to get your local WM to order the ones you want, to come in at the store, and not charge you the shipping.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
