Drinking after eating??

Recommended Posts

How long do you all wait to start drinking after eating a meal? I've read all kinds of conflicting info and I'm not sure.I'm wondering if I'm not waiting long enough and that's why the hunger returns so quickly sometimes??:crying:

I was told to wait 30 minutes.

Do you find that you get hungrier or feel less satisfied once you start drinking after eating??

I was told to wait 30 minutes but I usually wait until I know my food has "gone down" which really depends on what I ate. Sometimes I don't drink for a long time, but sometimes it will just be 10 minutes later.

On average, it probably is about 20-30 minutes though.

Drink whenever you need it. The no drinking before and after meals is mainly to make you feel full for longer. But if you're parched and need to drink, do so.

For those that don't know, consider it a Water slide. If you go down a wet slide, you go faster. And if you get stuck, the running Water behind you will push down. Same thing with food, you drink before, food will go through faster. You drink after, it forces the food faster.

The general rule of thumb is 30 min before, 1 hour after. I just drink if I'm thirsty.

Yeah, and that's the best way I know to get a dilated pouch which can potentially lead to another surgery.

With all due respect, this is the dumbest post I have seen in a long time. Why not tell people to dig their eye out with a rusty nail while they are at it?

Some people get mega stuck when trying to force that "water slide". It can also lead to pouch dilation which can lead to a stuck episode and then the vomiting can easily cause a slip.

You are clearly free to do this all you want but please don't give such horrible advice to newbies, they might actually do this.

Don't drink after meals.

I'm just quoting my surgeon when I say that, literally he just said exact analogy this past Saturday when I asked him about this exact thing.

If that's the case, then I'm being misinformed. I just figured he's a doctor, and well, I and you are not.

But if it's bad advice, don't take it. I just am quoting what I was told

Who is your doctor? I'd be happy to send him basic information on banding. ;o)

Each doc is different; mine is 15 before, during and 15 after, but often I wait longer than the 15 after because the one time I forgot and drank I thought it was going to kill me (this is once I had restriction. In the early stages not so much)

Especially in light of all the conflicting advice, your very safest course is to CALL YOUR DOC and ask. Period. That way you will be doing exactly what s/he thinks you should. This board is a great source of advice and support but never ever do something that contradicts your doc's orders, and if in doubt, go to the source...your surgeon.

I have NEVER found this. For the longest time I drank when I wanted to, and it never seemed to make me hungrier than when I didnt drink. Once I passed a certain point of restriction, I couldnt drink for a while as if I'm full, it makes me FULLER and causes discomfort or even pb.

For me, it most definitely does not wash everything through, in fact I can feel the increased pressure and fullnessn - which is why I avoid it these days, I mean I'd prefer not to suffer pouch dilation from shoving things in there. However, my "window" appears to be about 20 minutes, after which time drinking is completely comfortable, generally I wait the half hour which is my doctors guideline.

I figure early on, with less restriction the danger of pouch dilation is much less than later when you have restriction. When you have restriction, you will know in no uncertain terms that drinking right after a meal is a bad idea.

i wait at least an hour after eating even 2 hours, not cos i have to its cos im full/content with foods in my tummy & i dont get a thirst on, & this is coming from someone who could never eat a meal without having a drink with it...

Alot of the banding is common sense & learning from your own body what works for you..

I myself would never drink with a meal, but i would never brand a person if they cose to either, its what works for them & makes them happy :crying:

Usually I do not drink a half hour before and a hour afterwords.

When I am at an a restaurant I will sip and nurse a drink while waiting for the bill.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
