Greek Yogurt - Gimme the scoop

Recommended Posts

So I have noticed a lot of posts with people eating Greek Yogurt. Can you let me know if this is the fat-free version or normal version? Based on the website I went to all I saw was the fat-free version having plain flavor only. Are you mixing this with anything else? Are they good in smoothies?

I can't eat it. It tends to be more "gloppy" than regular yogurt like Yoplait. I can't handle the texture. It sticks in the back of my throat and makes me want to gag. It tastes wonderful, it's just to thick.

I love Greek yogurt! I actually make a sauce with it and dip my chicken breast in it. I find that chicken breast can be a bit dry so it makes it so much easier for me to eat. And it tastes good too, not to mention good for you.

I add lemon juice, a little garlic and a little olive oil and pepper, cilantro sometimes and/or even chopped cucumber.

It has the consistency of sour cream or slightly thicker. But has little to NO taste so it easily takes on whatever flavors you add to it.

I can't say I've had it in place of regular yogurt though. I imagine with some Splenda and cut up fruit like bananas and strawberries it might be pretty good.

I eat Chobani greek yogurt. It comes in different flavors like honey, vanilla, plain, then strawberry & blueberry (fruit on the bottom). I eat the vanilla and honey and there is 0g fat and 16g of Protein.

I'm going to have to look for this one, thanks! :rolleyes2:

I tried the Fage brand, and it tasted like thick sour cream. My local Kroger only carries the plain. It was fine in a strawberry smoothie, but I couldn't handle it right out of the container. The sauce idea sounds good, though.

I just stocked up on a few the other day and Walmart only had the single serve ones. Even those are too big for me  I just cut them in about 1/2.

I take 1 serving of the yogurt, 1 tablespoon of honey, and a 1/4 cup of granola. I think I get about 24 grams of Protein and around 200 calories. That holds me over to lunch.

I do this but with splenda instead of the honey...I might have to try the honey next time. I look for the highest protein/lower carb granola. It does stick with you for a long time and it's so creamy.

I should own stock in Fage plain nonfat yogurt as much as i use it - I love it. on its own (mixed with splenda or a spoonful of jam) with granola, Protein Cereal and/ or fruit. I put it in Protein shakes for more of a smoothie. I use it in place of sour cream for anything. I also add it to many Soups to make them creamier, thicker and get a Protein boost.

I get mine at several of the local grocery stores but my favorite place is whole foods - no surprise they have the best selection of brands, fat varieties, flavors and sizes but it was a surprise that they are actually cheaper than my grocery stores for this item. They also have the fage nonfat plain (my favorite ) in the single sups and 3 larger sizes all the way up to a 52 oz container (greek yogurt also has a longer shelf life) - I've had the 52 oz container open for a week without problem - great for my Breakfast every morning and then I've made several pureed Soups this week that ive added it to.

I also love using plain greek yogurt instead of mayo in tuna or chicken salad, just season with some salt & pepper, maybe curry powder or tarragon; tastes great!

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
