JUNE 2009 Lap Band Surgery

Recommended Posts

Am I the only June 18th so far? Unless I missed you in the 12 pages of posts, lol, it would seem so. Let me know if anyone else has that date, I need a buddy! :tt2:

Wow, I just want to wish everyone the BEST of luck!! I agree with the people that say no matter what our nickname is (I am just so excited to actually have one to belong to!!!!) we are all a team and we will be depending on each other to get through the tough times and Celebrate the good.

On a side note, anyone else in here having a hard time losing the pre-op weight? I was told to lose 20 lbs (10% of my excess body weight) but so far have only managed like...maybe 10? I have PCOS and losing weight on my own is extremely difficult. I've added way more exercise, so I'm hoping that works. My surgeon doesn't require a liquid diet and I was told specifically by my nutritionist not to go on one? Has anyone been told they can't have their surgery if they don't meet their pre-op goal? I'm kind of scared

Stephanie, My surgeon is very strict about preop weight loss and is strongly against any "last suppers" She feels that this is a lifestyle change and we must start preop not just after the band. Also, I had to go last Friday for a weight check and will be weighed again the morning of surgery; if there are any increases (more than a couple #'s) then the surgery is off, just like that. Like I said she is really strict with her guidlines, but I agree with her that this procedure should not be taken lightly.

I wish you success with your required weight loss. You can do it just stay focused on the big day!! Drink lots of Water and get outside for some extra exercise.

Good Luck

So I have my pre-op class (8 HOURS) next Monday. Tuesday is only mushies, and Wednesday is only Clear Liquids (Praise God it wasn't 2 weeks like most of you people!). But also on Wed. I have to do a "bell prep"? Basically take a prescription that will make me poop all morning! Then I have a dr appt at 2:00 that day. Concerned about the unknown I called today to find out what to expect (besides the poop. lol) at that appt. They will do a breast exam and a RECTAL exam! :(

Please tell me what those two areas have to do with this surgery???????????????????????????????????????????????????

I told my husband (whom I avoiding sexually at the moment for personal reasons) that we my have to loosen up my hind end a little to prepare for a STRANGERS finger up my tail pipe!! (He's quite happy I have to break my subatical. :w00t:) TMI I know!

It is amazing the differences between surgeons and continents. My surgery is this afternoon. I had a final app on Friday to ask any questions and that was it. No preop class, no bell prep and certainly none of the exams that you have mentioned.

Makes you wonder where they are putting the band!

Hi all!

I had my surgery today! I Went in at 7 this morning, went to sleep at 8:30, woke up at 9:45 and left the hospital at 11:45. I do have some pain in my tummy, but mostly the gas or air that they put in you is what is soooo uncomfortable:frown:. I've been walking a little every hour trying to work it out. My throat is sore and i'm hoarse from the tube they put in there, but really i think i'm doing pretty good. I hope all other june 1st banders did ok and good luck to the rest of you. You'll do fine!:(

I am scheduled for surgery on June 11 with Dr. Rumbaut in Monterrey, Mexico. I am really surprised how I am doing on my liquid diet. Sure, I am hungry, but I don’t feel like I am starving to death like I thought I would be. I hope this is a good sign for future behavior. I am a strong person most of the time so as long as I can get through the rough spots relatively quickly I am confident that I can use the tool of the Lap-Band to its fullest! Good luck to the rest of the June bandsters out there!

Remember the chap stick. Slather your lips with it just prior to surgery. The tube they put in you can stick to your lips on the way out and rip them up! Happened to my husband with an upper endoscopy.

Banded also on Monday. Things are going fine. Can drive tomorrow so I will get out and about. Getting fluids down okay but need to get some higher Protein Drinks to get in 60 grams. Walked around the block today...woo hoo.

Good luck to all who were banded Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
