Lap Band Surgery two weeks before wedding?

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

After years of thinking about lap band surgery and researching it extensively I recently decided to go through with it.

Here's my question for y'all. I have a date for surgery which is exactly two weeks before my wedding.

I would really like to have this surgery done before getting married if possible.

I want to make sure that two weeks after surgery (assuming there are no complications) I will be back to normal and fully able to enjoy my wedding.

Keep in mind, I am a 23 year old male, besides for being overweight - no other major health problems, and I usually recover and recuperate well and quickly.

What do you guys think???

Congratulations on your upcoming wedding! And on deciding to get the band! ;-)

I'm only a month post op, so take my opinion with a grain of salt (others may have better advice), but I wouldn't recommend it. My recovery went pretty smoothly for the most part, but I was definitely run down for the first week or two, tired easily and was pretty emotional. I can't imagine dealing with another major life event at the same time; but that's just me. I'd be concerned that one thing would overshadow the other and cause you stress, and keep you from enjoying your wedding day to the fullest.

I will tell you that now, a month out, I feel great! But it's just been in the past week or so that I've started to really feel "normal" again. (And I am the sort of person who recovers quickly and has a high pain tolerance, too.)

Whatever you decide, I wish you all the best for your new married and banded life!

Valerie

Wow! I admire your feelings of wanting to do this before you begin your new life together, and I did very well with my surgery and recovery and was back at work 5 days later, but I just can't imagine doing something as "big" as a wedding so soon. Especially if you are going all out with the event.........( big wedding, reception, etc).

I do think you can "get thru it fine" but I doubt you would really ENJOY the day. Not to mention the festivities afterwards.

Let us know what you decide, and we'll root you on!

I would recommend banding afterwards. Marriage is a major life event filled with stresses and last minute errands. You really want to be able to focus on the day and your new wife, not the liquid diet and feeling run down. Even if it seems like it will not be a big deal to you, it will also effect your fiance as well who will be worrying about you on top of the stress of a wedding.

Afterall, pushing it out a few weeks or month will not make a major difference in your life overall since banding is a long term solution . . . but marriage is a (hopefully) once in a lifetime event that you really want to devote full time and energy towards making it a great experience.

I think you are pushing it. I don't think you can consemate the marriage on your wedding night. You need to enjoy the beginning of your marriage and not have this to change the arora of the time.

Congrats on the upcoming wedding.

I whole wholeheartedly agree with Heather. You will be on a liquid diet and will be kinda run down. Plus everyone heals at different rates. you don't want to take a chance of not being able to have your wedding at all if your not well enough. Plus there is the honeymoon. All Dr.s are different on when they tell you that you can make love. You don't want to tear your stitches out or tell your bride "sorry baby I can't. You will have to just cool your heels." Have the surgery after your wedding. Many blessings on you and your future wife. Keep us posted please.36_3_28.gif 11_3_3v.gif

do the band....forget the marriage!! HAHA only kidding. yea thats a tough call...you will still be on liquids then and you will be run down. plus traveling on your honeymoon(you didnt mention if you are going on one) may be tough. Good luck!! I wish you the best on both occasions!

I agree with what the others are saying. Although you will likely be fine to return to work a week after surgery, that is very different from something like a wedding.

Enjoy your day and your honeymoon without having to deal with liquid diets and stitches. I'd push the surgery out far enough so you will be back from your honeymoon before you have to start the liquid diet.

I was hell on wheels when I was on liquids, I couldn't imagine trying to enjoy one of the most special events of your life.

Live it up and CONGRATULATIONS!

Congratulations on your upcoming wedding!

I would definitely wait until after the wedding/honeymoon for the surgery.

Best of luck to you!

Yeah I would wait. I felt fine after about a week of complete rest. And with a wedding coming up, you won't have time to rest! And you'll be on liquids, that means no wedding cake!! No food at your reception or honeymoon. I just got married last year, and I couldn't even imagine dealing with surgery and doc apppointments at that time. But good luck with whatever you decide, hope you have a wonderful wedding!!

Another vote for wait. It's not a race, and you'll be better set to succeed once you get the wedding behind you (you do have to work with the band, and that takes some time and energy to get used to!) I recovered VERY fast from my surgery (had it on friday, back to school where I'm a student on tuesday, no pain meds, no issues) and I still wouldn't have wanted to have anything big just 2 weeks post op.

Give your wedding and "new life together" all your attention...then once you are married and settled into a routine (which can be quick...depending on your relationship etc) THEN get the band. Give yourself an opportunity to "enjoy" both things, if that makes sense?

Well I too vote for wait. You are not going to see that big of a change in two weeks so why not just enjoy your wedding. I hope you get it but if I were you I would def wait.

I vote for wait, you dont want it to interfere with your ability to do the chicken Dance!

Wow!

Thanks to all of you who responded!

It sounds like everyone is in agreement that I should wait till after the wedding...

Oh well. I waited this long I can wait the extra month or two.

This is why I love LapBandTalk! Nothing like hearing information first hand from those who've been through it.

Will keep y'all updated as to what I end up doing.

Thanks again. :mad2:

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
