Just Banded and can't get protein down

Recommended Posts

I was just banded on 2/12 and I purchased the Isopure drinks in all flavors and some Protein bullets. I'm having the worst time getting them down. They taste so horrible!! I'm honestly not one to complain, and I know that there's really nothing I can do about it but grin and bear it but it's really not so easy. Any suggestions on what I can do? I'm afraid to dilute them because it will be too much liquid to get down...?

Also, I'm hating my liquid Multivitamin. It's green and smells awful and is kinda chunky. Not at all what I expected. Any suggestions on what else I can do for my Vitamin supplement?

I use Bariatric Choice Vitamins, the are chewable and taste like orange not bad.For Protein I love Muscle Milk but it binds up my stomach so instead I use GNC Pro Performance Wheybolic Extreme 60 - chocolate has 310 calories and 60 grams of Protein per serving so you just need one a day.

Sounds like the OP is on clears and the protein products you list are not clear Proteins.

The clear Proteins are gross, no way around it.

The only thing that helped me was that the Protein bullets were very little to actually drink. 42g in 3 oz isn't tooooo bad. I would do 2 sips at a time which was about 1 oz. I drank 2 bullets a day and that was more than my required. I doubt I could've drank an isopure drink since it is so much more liquid. I do hear about people who don't like the New whey bullets mixing them with Crystal light, but I never tried it. I drank them straight and didn't think they were too bad.

Oh, and for my Vitamin, I use the One-a-Day Essentials. They are a little smaller than an m&m so I just swallow them. I think you can only buy them online now. I had them stockpiled because it is all my teenage daughter would swallow.

I'm not one to tell you to go against what your surgeon/clinic has advised so if they say you need all this Protein then it looks like you are just gonna have to grin and bear it....

The clinic I used never made us worry about doing Protein drinks even right after surgery. They felt that going a couple of weeks with a lower Protein intake wasn't anything to be too concerned about. I didn't have a strict 'clear' liquid stage, just liquids for 2 weeks and I never did a single 'protein drink'. 2 years later I have still never done a Protein Drink and have certainly not suffered from it.

If you really can't handle them, when not just try chicken broths and things like that. If you absolutely must take protein I have heard that 'powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury makes an unflavored powder that can be added to almost anything to up protein content...maybe see if you can find it.

All the best !!

Patricia

Two words - Protein Blitz. These clear, fruit-flavored drinks are made by Designer whey and they kick Isopure's butt all over the place in terms of taste. They come in Grape, Orange Mango and Punch, and taste like Kool-aid to me. They also don't leave you with that slightly chalky texture that Isopure has. They have 30 g of protein per 20 oz as opposed to 40 that the Isopure has, but if you can't stomach the Isopure it's kind of a moot point. lol

Give them a try! They were a life saver for me.

What kind of protein are they? Whey? Soy? Colligen?

I was banded on the 11th and am having a difficult time with this as well. I am on full liquids though. I bought some chocolate flavored whey Protein and have been making shakes daily. I have a diffiucult time drinking all of them. I really need two a day to meet my clinic's requirement for the first 2 weeks post surgery. I'm trying though. I just ordered the Unjury unflavored protein powder today. I'm hoping that it helps. GL

I also couldn't choke do wn the Protein bullets but found that they were not too bad if I diluted them with Water and added a little Crystal Lite. It also helps get the water that we all need.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
