Feeling Too Normal

Recommended Posts

I had my band done three weeks ago today. Aside from my right side getting a little......tired....not as bendable.....I don't really know what to call it, I'm feeling great. This bothers me because I'm hoping all is well. I've done well with drinking liquids the first two weeks and the third week I've eaten mushy stuff. If was dying for something salty, so I ate a few tiny pretzel sticks and chewed them to death! I moved a little more into dipping two tortilla chips in some hot sauce and chewed them to death. I never swallowed before they were mush and I drink alot of Water. I guess I'm worrying because I haven't felt a full feeling, I'm not overeating just because I know I shouldn't. I'm eating right other than those few things and I don't want to do anything to ruin anything. I feel like I could eat anything and not be affected. I feel like I could eat a hamburger and not be affected. (Mind you, I would never do that.) Maybe I don't feel full because I've not eaten to that point. Maybe it's because everything is going down into my stomach because I'm chewing so well. Maybe the band is not working and I've done all this for nothing. When I get my first fill, will that be the time I feel full because the pouch really is smaller? I feel everything is right and done well, I just don't have any of the problems others have with certain foods or problems. Is this good, or am I doing something wrong? I have lost 20 pounds so far, but who wouldn't drinking stuff for two weeks. Let me know how some of you felt at three weeks post op.

I was banded on July 11 and feel the exact same way, I haven't been brave enough to try anything hard but other than that I know exactly what you are saying. I don't think we did this all for nothing, I think we will get restriction when we get a fill or two. Everyone here says the first 6 weeks is for healing. I sure hope they are right. Congrats on the 20 pounds!!!

Oh yes, you are doing it all wrong. You should be in agonizing pain, and puking your guts out.

Wait, that can't be right, oh yeah, YOU ARE DOING GREAT!!!! This is what it "should" be like. I'm so sorry you are expecting the very worst. Of course you are getting a little tired, you just had major surgery. MAJOR SURGERY, not a hang-nail removed.

One thing I notice is that many of us equate "full" with that horrible over-stuffed feeling, instead of being satisifed with what we've eaten. It sounds to me like you are satisfied and content with what your body is telling you, right?

I eat cheese burgers on occasion, even pizza. Not an entire pizza anymore mind you, and not a giant mondo burger the size of a dinner plate. I eat a sensible sized amount of food.

Why do you expect the worst when everything is going great? BE KIND TO YOUR SELF!

i am 10 days post op and i am eating normal foods already. i am chew chew chewing the hell out of everything! i have had chineese food .. steak. . shrimp ..chicken ..and scrambled eggs..noodles...I have no problems i even ate some home made chicken enchilladas. mind you I am not eating very much at all but i am eating. you are probably not feeling full because you are not eating solids. the liquids drain right out of your new stomach and into your old one. you will not feel full with beverages unless you guzzle a gallon of it at at time. i was supposed to be on the liquids for two weeks and mushies for a week and then progress from there. talked to my doc at post op he said as long as i am getting my Water and my Protein and my daily exercise in I am doing fine. so keep up the great work!

Thank you all for your reply's. I love this site! I am drinking Water. Of all my bad eating habits, Water drinking wasn't one of them. I like water and chose it 99.9% of the time. Like so many, I just fear I've done something to cause the band to slip and mess it all up. I really can't imagine that with what I've eaten, but one never knows. If I do eat something I consider maybe not allowed yet, I do chew it to mush and drink it down with water swallowing it some with each swallow. (That's kind of talented now that I think of it.) Again, thank you all for the support. I will weigh again on Sunday. Oh, how do you get the information under your names about your weight loss to date. I've looked at my main screen, but I can't seem to find it.

LOL!!

Well said Queen!

I've been banded just over 2 months now & I felt good enough to be worried too. It wasn't until week 4 when I ate some chicken too quickly w/o chewing enough and had the infamous PB visited me that I finally accepted that this thing is "working."

I'll PM you directions for changing your signature. It took me a while to figure it out too... :)

I'm 10 days post op and experiencing the same thing. It's a little unsettling having the surgery and then having to wait 6 weeks to feel the effect. I'm sure once we got that first fill we'll be feeling more confident.

I was banded on July 26th. The first week, I didn't even think of food - I was in a lot of pain with esophagus spasms. Once I found out I wasn't having a heart attack, they eventually went away after six days. I was wondering too, if I wasn't getting the 'full' feeling and something was wrong. After my one week post-op appointment with the surgeon, he said I have a good start - I lost 21.5 lbs in one week! Yippee! I am starting to notice when I'm eating that I eat because it's in front of me, not because I'm hungry. I just returned from a 'family night dinner' at a local restaurant. After I ordered I asked for a 'doggy bag' right a way and removed everything, but what I thought was 4 oz. of food. It's starting to work for me. I love this site, it's so nice to know your not on the journey alone. Thank you all!

I have had my band 4 weeks and when I eat a piece of meat I find I usually can not hold anythiing more. I am full, not stuffed. I try to quit eating before feeling stuffed. I don't want to PB. I have not had a fill yet and I know that will change everything. So far I am able to control my eating with just the band. I am following the band rules. I did try a hamburger with the bun and it hurt going down so I ate just the meat. Same with rice. Maybe I did not chew enough. Not sure so I will just avoid those things. Don't need them anyway. Try to get your Protein first then you may find you really are satisfied. Sometimes I want things just because I do, not from hunger. If you want salt I think the prezel sticks were fine as long as you chewed well and it did not hurt you. My doctor said to take a couple of bites and wait a few minutes to see if it was going to bother you. If not it was fine.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
