Fill Probl;em: Band losing Fluid

Recommended Posts

Help! Everytime I have a fill there is less Fluid in there than there was before. I have very little restriction and have not lost weight in months. My doc says it is not a leak. Does anyone know what this is about?:)

What does your doctor say is causing it? If he doesn't know, but acknowledges that there is, indeed, less Fluid, he needs to find out where it's going!

Search on website Wendell Edwards. He is a doctor that explains what is happening. I had a fill 2 1/2 weeks ago and I am going back for another one already. I have also read you can ask for a sticky fill which is thicker and works better for some people who go back over and over. But read the way it works from Wendell Edwards.

Are you being informed of the exact amount of Fluid discrepancy? If its a significant amount each time i would certainly demand an explanation. I had the same exact thing happen and i made quite sure i was told the EXACT amount that was in my band versus what was supposed to be there. I ended up having to have my port replaced.

Kelin, did they say what was wrong with your port? Did you have to have surgery to replace it?

Thanks for you input - Penguin

Funny I just came back from the doctor and he mentioned this to me before we proceeded with my fill, I told him I was losing restriction and he said that it may be possible worst case senerio that I may have a leak and then he said that there is a thicker substance that he may place in my band that requires only half of what it would need with saline and he said it was thick almost like oil. Ok so we go in and he takes out 7.6 (I was suppose to have over 10ccs in my 9 cc band right?) Well come to find out I only had 7.6cc. So he was like almost torn between filling me back with the same Fluid and a tiny bit more vs the other filling they are using now. He decided to go with the regular saline and gave me a swallow and put 1.1cc in there and we watched how "fast" it went through and he was satisfied so now I am 8.7ccs in my band. I just hope it gives me some restriction or that "full" feeling ya know. My pouch was not stretched like I secretly thought it was, and it over all looked great. I only lost 3.8lbs this past month I am taking it as at least it's a loss NOT A GAIN! So we will see...

Oh and that rock guy came to mind when I was in the room when I saw the realize dummy you know the little display they have to show you what it looks like around your stomach and I mentioned that people were saying that when you put the realize band around the stomach it's almost trianglar well we did that and it was completely around the stomach like a circle or rather just like the lap band although I have to agree it is much wider than the lap band and of course the port is much smaller too...:tt1: just something I noticed is all...

Slinderblella,

Wow, the fills you have had. I got banded on 11/20 had a fill on 12/18 1.8cc in a 9.75cc band and am going in for another fill on 1/10. I had some restriction at first and have only lost a total of 17 lbs and loved the way it felt when I first got the fill. Now it does nothing. I do not want to see myself go up even one lb in the opposite way. I will continue to be agressive with the fills and keep working toward the "sweet spot! I see a lot of people have to keep adjusting, adjusting, adusting. I am going to ask for the thicker stuff if they will do it?

Good luck to you.

Yea but I wouldn't have it any other way now at first i was liek wha tis wrong with you people be more agressive but now I am glad he took his time becasue it gave me time to adjust to this new way of eating and feeling if that makes sense. I am still losing at a very SLOW pace am I mad no because at the end of the day it's a loss not a gain. I only lost 3lbs this past month not blaming it all on personl issues but it doesn't help when your dealing with these kinds of issues either. ALL in all I am just going with the flow...I LOST, I am a loser a small one but still!!!!

My surgeon is another one who takes it slow! (And no I get free fills for a year so he's not doing it for the money) He took a good while to explain why, and I found research to support his position, and I'm totally on board with it. Sure, I'd like to lose faster but if that had been my total goal, I'd have gone for bypass. I want long term loss and a normal life.

I had 3cc placed in at the time of surgery. I have a 10cc band. On December 10, the doctor took out the old fill to see what was left and there was 2.5cc. She put that back in and added 1.5cc. So now I have 4cc. My next fill is January 14, so I cannot wait to see what is left in the band.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
