Stages of Weight Loss

Recommended Posts

I've been researching different sites about the Lapband and how much each person has lost. Now, on one site everyone seems to be losing 70lbs within 5 mths but then coming to other sites such as this, some seem to be losing only 20lbs in 5 or 6mths. I am just wondering if those whom are losing greater amounts are exercising more or if they were younger when they got the band. I do realize that if you are younger you can lose the weight easier than when you are older especially for women after age 35 or so.

I guess I am just curious as to why there are some saying they've lost so much within a just a short period of time and others not as much. I mean I want to lose weight but kinda wondering why some are losing alot more than others, if it could be the band they have, or they've had more fills than others...etc.

On most accounts, the bigger you are and the more you have to lose the faster you lose it. I was a "light weight" in the beginning weighing 235 at 5'7" and I lost 65 within the first year. Now someone that weighs 300 may lose 65 in the first 6 months....everyone is different!

I haven't been banded yet, but that was exactly what my theory was on the differences in weight loss.

Best of luck to everyone!

Well all I can say is I got banded 4 months ago and I'm down 40 pounds since I got banded.... Thats 10 pounds per month which is plenty. I lost 13 pounds before I got banded and I'm down a total of 52 pounds in all. Everyone is different and we all lose at a different rate!!!

I can say I was banded almost 17 months ago and I have lost 95 lbs

from a size 20-22 to 8-10

It is not easy, my mind has to do alot of the work, I do not rely on the band to do it all,

I lost the majority of my weight with 3 fills(2.5cc's), then I was unfilled for 2 months on APril 20 to June 20th and have gotten 2 fills since June 20th and Iam at 1.5 cc's and I am good at this level..

We all are different, different ages, different body styles, different metabolisms and different brains.

You get out of the band what you put into it is how I see it. It is not a magic wand, it is a tool to help us, that is it. It does require work on our part.

It also can depend upon whether or not a person has reached true restriction as to how much weight they will lose. For some people it takes a long time to get the right kind of restriction for weight loss. For others it may happen with the first fill. Some doctors aren't as "fill happy" as others as well. I agree with the above statement that it also just depends on the person. There can be sooo many factors.

Well, I'm gonna have to get out my old notes (from a VERY scientific and successful weightloss program I did a few years ago) and type out some detailed information on this, but really it's all about physics. Gravity: ignore it and you'll fall. But for the sake of this discussion please keep these averages in mind...

A 300 pound woman walking will burn 10 calories per minute--60 calories an hour.

A 150 pound woman walking will burn 5 calories perminute--30 calories an hour.

So just walking around during the day you will burn TWICE as many calories when you are 300# than you will when you are 150#. Considering how much most of us dislike exercise we are unlikely to double our activity unless we regard it as essential to our weightloss--which it is.

One time for 4 weeks I kept meticulous records of my PACs (Physical Activity Calories) and calories consumed and it was absolutely amazing how I could predict at the end of the week exactly how much I would lose. It became very clear to me I would either have to workout twice as long or twice as hard to get the same weightloss results at a lower weight as I had at a higher one.

I've got a whole chart of how many PACs per minute one expends for each activity and weight. I guess I could type it all up, but that would take awhile. Does anyone happen to know of a chart like this online anywhere?

That's why comparing WEIGHT lost is fairly meaningless, even considering that higher weight people may lose more pounds faster. (No offense to those who DO put their weight in their sig lines.) What WOULD be important is changes in BMI. Then we could kind of compare to each other.

Here are my BMI stats. I struggled w/reflux the first two years and slippage & rebanding the third year. Now I'm great (good restriction and no reflux!!).

BMI Stats

July 17 2002: 39 (severely obese)

July 17 2003: 34.9 (obese)

July 17 2004: 30.9 (obese)

July 17 2005: 25.5 (overweight)

July 30 2005: 24.6 (normal * normal * normal * normal !!!! )

Eventual goal: 22 (right in the middle of the "normal" range)

One of the othr things to keep in mind is your beginning health. If you have some serious co-morbid things, or develop some new issues, it is possible that you will have a much slower weight loss.

I am frustrated with my progross. The scale says I've had a net loss of 1 pound this month. Sure, I've lost a whole size, but I can't help but focus on that one pound loss. I don't want to focus on the scale, but I do.

I wish I never had to step on anthother scale again. I wish I could just focus on the size of cothes I wear, but I have to deal with the damn scale.

I'm 23 and I lost about 50 lbs in the first year. It's not the rate of progress I would have liked to see, but hey, I'm glad to be down 50 lbs! I've also gone from a BMI of 45, to around 37, and I didn't have any co-morbidities, so I'd no longer qualify for the surgery (in the US anyway).

;)

Thank you Molly. I knew there had to be something on here like that. Very strange tho, they have all kinds of "cleaning" and "playing with animals" on the list but when I put in "Elliptical trainer" there's no data available!

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
