8 months post op...no weight loss

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I keep reading about everyone's successes but I have not had one since I was banded in April '08. I lost 25-30 lbs before my surgery and lost about 5 the weeks after but have not lost any more than that. I have a 10 cc band and I have had 4 fills. My last fill being in August and they filled me all the way to 10 cc. It worked for about 3 weeks where I felt good restriction and I was eating well and excercising...still only losing about 5 lbs. After that 3 weeks I have been able to eat anything...pasta, bread, rice, sushi with no reprecussions. Once I recieved my last fill in August I decided not to go back to my doctor because the nurse would basically yell at me for not losing weight and when I told her that I can eat bread and pastas she responded with "but why are you?" I told her I just paid $10K not too. I don't have insurance right now but am hoping to in the next couple of months and go to another doctor. Has anyone had this problem? Could my band be too big? Could the band have a leak? I don't think my pouch has expanded because I feel everything I eat go straight through...I am extremely discouraged and want to give up so bad because of the lack of interest and chastising by my doctor and now wish I just would have bought a car with that money. Any thoughts would be most appreciative.

Hi - I had my band put in in April also. I've lost about 15 lbs. total - that includes liquid, prep, etc. Turns out they think the band has a technical problem, maybe a kind near the band. I had a procedure with a local in the doctor's office - I'm awake and he cuts my chest open. Don't think I'll do that again. So that was in November now I'm expecting to have a second surgery in January and either have the band replaced or fixed - depending on what he finds.

I agree - I paid $15,000 for some help with this - so far none.

Hope your problem isn't the same as mine. I'm not looking forward to another surgery.

Good luck.

I have to agree with the general feeling, go to your doc and talk honestly about how you are feeling, how hard things have been going and how frustrated you are feeling. The staff should be there to help you not make this journey harder.:frown:

I have the exact same situation. Lost 27lbs at pre op diet and only 32 in total. I'm trying to tell myself that is 32 lbs I probably would not have lost. I also sprained my ankle so I have not been exercising for 6 weeks. It is still better than the gaining 10 lbs I've been doing every year. Think of it that way

You need to go back to your doctor and have them look into what the problem might be. I am guessing there is a medical reason why it's not working...but

the band is a TOOL and you need to work it like a tool. I hate to say it and be preachy, but don't eat the bread, Pasta and junky foods. Stick to the 1/2 cup portion size even if you CAN eat more. Or go back on liquids for two weeks to shrink the pouch. Don't drink and eat at the same time. You can't just go back to old habits and make the band work. The band won't work alone. You MUST follow the diet and exercise plan. I found that when I strayed I lost a lot less.. When I was back on track, I've done great. I was eating potato chips and Pasta for awhile and went on what I called a plateau, but really I wasn't losing b/c I was eating JUNK!!

also, if you haven't GAINED, consider that a success. I know I was continually gaining before surgery, so if you've managed to keep off that weight you are doing great and the band is doing something for you!

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
