Hi, My name is Kim and I live in Overland Park and I was banded on June 16th. When I started this whole journey I was in the same boat, I was terrified. I am a complete BABY when it comes to pain and was laying in hospital thinking what am I doing. Once I woke up, I am not going to lie it hurt but NOTHING like I had imagined. 2 Days later I was thinking wow was I being a baby  and it turned out that it was a piece of cake. Now each person is different but you will be ok. If you need anything please feel free to message me.

Hello from OP! I live in OP and am getting banded by Doctor Hitchcock, he is now a partner at Malley Surgical/New Hope Bariatrics. Due to insurance I am having it done at Menorah Med Center.

I understand your fear if you werent alittle scared you'd be crazy! I mean we are having SURGERY!!!

Just focus on what you can control! You will lose weight, you will feel better, you will look better in your clothes and in pictures, you should live longer and have a better quality of life and not be a slave to your hunger!

I am sooooooo excited but also scared to. Let's help eachother!

How much do you have to lose? Who is your doc?

Cara in OP

All of you that are getting banded, please just relax. It's not as bad as you think it is. I had mine December 8th and will have my first fill in a few weeks and can't wait. It's the best thing that I have ever done. I went in the hospital on Tuesday at 11am was home the next morning at 11am. You will be a little uncomfortable for a week or so but then you will forget all about it. The worst part of the whole thing is when you have to do the swallow test for an exray before you go home. The liquid they make you drink is disgusting. Buts its only about 2 ounces. Other than that it was no big deal. I worried and worried before surgery just like all of you but then laughed at myself for being so silly that night. I dont get to Overland Park very often but if anyone would like to get together in a month or so let me know at roy4345@sbcglobal.net and I will try to come and meet a bunch of you. Roy:wink_smile:

Hey vanneypeace, great to hear back from you! Let's keep in touch and help each other through the process. When do you start your pre-opt diet? I start on Monday the 5th. I think I am more scared of that then the surgery! I don't know if I have that kind of control...if I did I wouldnt need the surgery! I am going to give it my best! I have about 70 lbs to lose. I have lost it before but never have been able to keep it off! That is why I chose the band. I am so excited! you can contact me @ - HOME look forward to hearing from you. Cara

Hey Vannypeace, how are you doing? I don't know if my email address got to you or not? it is cfmw@everestkc.net. Are you on a pre-opt diet? I am on day 6 of mine and it has been hard...during the day while I am working is no problem cause I don't have time to stop and eat...that is what got me into this mess, I was eating fast food everyday and just got hooked and in a rut! The hard time for me is in the evening and the weekend with my family. I have a 4 yo son and my Husband does not know how to cook, bless his heart. He is starting to at least try! :tongue2: Keep in touch! Cara

Hey luvksu, congrats on getting your band! My Doc, Hitchcock used to be with Dr. Hoen. I have heard great things about your Doc!

How did surgery go? Did you have to stay overnight? How did the preopt go? Mine is going ok......alittle cheating but they give the same diet no matter how much you have to lose....that doesnt make a whole lot of sense to me. Plus some Docs don't have a preopt diet at all? Just wondering.....

There is a support group meeting in February here in KC, have you heard about it? It's called KCBandsters and they have a support group also located on Yahoo under groups. It would just be nice to know people that are going through the same ordeal. I don't know anyone personally that has had it, do you? Cara/OP

Welcome AnyaK, good luck on your insurance approval, my insurance approval came within a couple of weeks! They just wanted an additional letter from my PCP that I was healthy enough for the surgery then it was a go ahead! I am so thrilled as I am sure you will be. How many times have you met Dr. H? I only had one consult with him. I kindof wish I knew him better but I liked him when we spoke. Do you know if you have to go to the Hospital or are you having it at New Hope? Do you have any friends that have had it? I don't so this website is a great help with information ! My surgery is Monday so I will check in and let you all know how it goes! Take care! Cara

Hello Cara, WOW Monday, I'm very happy for you. I wish it were me. After you got your approval how long was it to surg date. I have only had one consult with Dr. Hitchcock. Do you know if I will have a pre op visit? I think I get to stay at New Hope for surg. My ins is BCBS Federal PPO, and TriCare. Their office seems to think I will have no problems with Ins. I hope their right!

How are you feeling? Monday is coming up fast. I can't wait to hear how it goes. I will be thinking of you on Monday.

HAPPY SURGERY DAY TO YOU! :(

Anya

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
