I'm having surgery Feb. 09. I was diagnosed with diabetes Oct.08. Nervous about the pain, healing and a possible higher risk of complications.

Presurgery, I was on 2 shots of Byetta a day, plus 80 Lantus at night. During my 4 day Pre-op diet, I stopped the Byetta and stepped down the Lantus to 5 the night before surgery. My post surgery diet is Clear Liquids for 2 weeks and during this time, he has kept me off the Byetta, but put me on 20 of Lantus each evening. My blood sugars are great. I just hope I lose enough weight during this period that when I move to soft stuff, I don't have to increase my meds. Of course, like everyone, my ultimate goal is no meds!

I currently take 3 shots of byetta daily (2 from the 10 pen, and one from the 5 pen), and 1500 mg of glucophage (metformin). I also take lipitor. I have been wondering if I'll be taken off these meds before the procedure, or only after weight is shed, and labs indicate I can be done with them! Thanks for sharing, all!

I took just the byetta, and two shots a day. I'm off, have been since the day of my surgery. My surgeon told me that there was some damage the byetta would do to the band. Plus I haven't needed anything. My sugars, even after eating chocolate, is great.

I just had pre-op testing today. The Dr. told me to go off of insulin when I started the liquid diet and to only take it if I need to. I'm soooo excited!! Could this be the beginning of something great???

Prior to WLS, my diabetes meds were Byetta 5 twice a day and Lantus 80 mg at night. I was banded on 12-18-08. When I started my 4 day preop clear liquids, I stopped the Byetta totally and stepped down my Lantus from 80 per night down to 5 the night of surgery. After surgery, I was told to go back on Lantus 20 at night only. Then after 2 weeks, I went to 20 at night and 10 at noon. I am just finishing full liquids today and my BS's stay between 80-100. I am a little anxious to see what happens when I begin mushies tomorrow. I plan to stay as low carb as possible to keep my meds down as I continue to lose.

Good luck and let us know how it goes. :sneaky:

Hi all!

I just saw my surgeon yesterday. I am excited to read that you are seeing the results of the medications being reduced. I am on 2000mg of glucophage, 3 shots of 10units of novolog at meals and 55 units of lantus at night. I am really hoping this will help me get off some of these meds.

I have to lose 10lbs before I can make the next appoint with the case manager but then I should be on my way.

Great info.

Thanks,

Tera

Hi guys... I had my banding surgery Nov 18, 08... was on a lot of meds for diabetes. They put me on sliding scale insuling after the surgery... Started out ok... but now that I'm on regular foods, my sugars are going crazy. I was always between 80 and 120 with meds. Now I'm normally around 220 first thing in the morning and around 150 at lunch and dinner... then it starts going up again... Even when I've tried to take an extra insulin shot around 8 p.m. and a small snack... maybe I'll get to 100, which is great... but the next morning I'm back at 220 or so again! I'm very frustrated. I've lost 26 pounds since the surgery so far and this is not what I expected. I test my sugar prior to every meal and then take novolog, which I understand is a short acting insulin... But I'm getting worse, not better. I'm told that the more insulin I have to take, the worse my prospects are for losing.. and in fact seem to have hit a plateau since my first fill which was Jan 5. Does anyone have any ideas for me? I'm totally lost. :cursing::tongue:

Sorry to hear about your high sugars. I have been banded now about 6 weeks and currently take 20 Lantus at night and 10 at noon, with a 25 lb weight loss. When doing the liquids only, I was usually around the mid 90s. Now that I am eating regular food I am trying to maintain low carb and keep to very small meals. My sugars after eating go about 135-170, and come down appropriately. I definitely do better when exercising. At this time, I am content to have my surgeon monitor my meds, but I think if I had problems like you are experiencing, I would be back to my endocronologist. Like you, the more meds I was on the harder my weight loss was. Good luck.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
