Any experienced bandsters like self-torture?!

Recommended Posts

I don't REALLY like self torture, but why do I STILL do it to myself?! I am fairly experienced with the band, being over a year post op... There is a learning curve, but once you 'get it' you pretty much follow the rules... except every so often I still do stupid things... Like today... I made these nifty little BBQ beef biscuit thingies for my DH and kids for when I go to work tonight. They are easy to warm up and daddy-proof. So, they came out of the oven and I decided I needed to 'test' the cooking. Ate 1/2 and got the 'feeling' that I needed to stop. And still, I decided to rationalize, saying "If I just chew the last few bites a lot, it will be fine..." Like I can rationalize with my Band.

In a couple minutes I was on the floor, doing the downward dog, trying to loosen up that overeating... and regretting every moment of it. Will I EVER learn?!!

It is so hard to break the habits of many years. I did the same thing last night when my DH and I were at dinner. I had a delicious piece of salmon with some veggies on the side. It was so good that I kept having just one more bite, ignoring all the signals that tell me I am full. Well the last bite had me heading to the restroom to say goodbye. I know better but I still did it. Years of conditioning take a while to undo. At least the band doesn't let us keep going indefinitely.

I have tried to rationalize with my band too... The band always wins in the end. Thank goodness or else I would regain 66+

Bad habits are hard to kick but we can if we just keep keeping on.

Good luck!

Thanks for sharing your experience with us. I am 9 weeks post-op and have done the same thing several times and also wondered 'Will I ever learn?' Your post made me realize that this learning process is going to take awhile and I'm going to have to be super vigilent for a long time. Wishing you good luck.

I did it last week in a Vietnamese restaurant - it was sooooo good, I just ate way too much, then had to leave the table to PB three times and spit in a coffee cup all the way home on the freeway!

Last night we went out to a steak house and I was much more restrained but then I got the third degree about what was wrong with my meal. The fact was that the smallest steak was 200 grams and I ate about a third of it and the waitress was making eyes obviously thinking I was anorexic.

the trouble with a band and what you realise when you lose restriction (like with my small unfill recently) is that you eat to feeling quite satisfied, you dont get used to staying empty like successful dieters do (and there's hardly any of them around). The only difference between band and preband is that you cant push past that point! One more bite is one too much!

But I think we all do it at times.

I also inist on eating foods I know will give me pain, even though I can get them down. But the trouble is, its those foods that satisfy me most. If I eat something that causes no pain or discomfort whatsoever to eat I'll either eat heaps of it or be starving in an hour.

Yes!! I too had un fill and have been struggling with portion size and reason. ( I had 1 cc removed because I was having some issues) I was amazed at how FAST you can return to your old ways when you lose the "fear" of PB'ing and all the stuff that goes with being "just right" with your band restriction.

Thank you for your honesty. I am not banded but can eat till I feel sick even without the band. I'm glad I read this post as it really is a reality check. This isn't going to be a piece of cake. I can rationalize any of my bad behaviors...now that it is the winter and I can hide behind alot of clothes I think oh why am I bothering as I'm a lower BMI with not real health issues yet, but I have to remember it's not going to get any better the older I get and I will probably just keep gaining weight.

I still "test" my band every once in a while. By now, I know exactly when to stop, exactly when I know I will be uncomfortable but not PB, exactly when I will PB . . . but I still occasionally PB from a bad choice.

For me it is almost like a reality check . . . it reminds me that without my band, I would be testing my limits (and waistline expansion possibilities) every day. Thank goodness I have a band.

One more comment . . . as far as will we ever learn . . . I have learned, I just occasionally ignore the signs.

I think it is the little binge demon in my brain saying "just a little, just a little, just a little."

I have a binge demon! I just didn't know what to call her before now! Thanks for the new word! She has been whispering in my ear since around Halloween. I am actively fighting back and am determined to beat her! :)

My little binge demon tells me "clean up your plate!" I have been banded almost 6 months and I still struggle with telling myself NO YOU DON'T need to clean up your plate. Now that I have good restriction, the pain stops me. Haven't had any PBs just pain in my chest if I overdo it. Or if the first 2 bites are too large or too fast, I might as well tell myself to give it up for a few hours cuz anymore and I will be hurting! Yes its a learning curve and looks like it will be for quite a while. Still love my band tho!

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
