Are You Able to Feel Your Uterus (From the Outside)?

Recommended Posts

I'm 13 weeks along and my baby books tell me that I may now be able to feel my uterus if I push down approximately 3-4 inches below my belly button. So last night, I felt around underneath my pannus and tried to feel the uterus, which should be extending upward now. I couldn't feel anything, except the fat I still need to lose. Has anyone else been able to feel their uterus, and if so, what does it feel like?

I've given up on the hope of having a cute baby bump. Being 6'0 tall and still needing to lose a good 50 lbs, I'm not going to look like a woman trying to smuggle a watermelon. But now I'm a little worried that I won't be able to feel things such as my uterus as I get larger.

I've never asked a doctor, but I *think* I was able to feel mu uterus at that time. I am still overweight as well. I am 5'6" and was 204 at that time in my pregnancy.

What I did was I stood upright (for me, it was a LOT harder to find lying down) and pressed in just below my belly button. Again, I'm not sure, but I *think* that hardness you feel is your uterus.

And don't worry about how you'll look pregnant. That was (and is) a huge issue with me as well. I find that if I just wear shirts specifically made for pregnant people, I always look pregnant (rather than just fat). When strangers tell you, "Sure! You can use the bathroom! When are you due?", it makes you feel REALLY good!

Good luck!

I can feel mine slightly and I am not as far along but I have to stand up to feel anything. I notice it because it is not flab, it is under the stomach muscles and is a little hard and mine is right above my pubic bone. I am not as far along but since this is my second pregnancy it is expected that the signs show earlier. Other than a little excess skin, I don't have much belly fat anymore (I always carried it most in my hips and thighs anyway).

If this is your first pregnancy, it is not unusual not to feel much yet . . . but you will and it won't be long. With my first pregnancy, I don't think I felt anything until 16+ weeks out.

Have you had any gain at all yet? I am up 1 pound so far which isn't so bad.

I'm 16 weeks and I still have no signs of pregnancy.. so.. don't feel bad!!

I feel fat when I push on my belly, and no kicks or anything exciting.

I am also 6'0 and due to my first trimester weight gain (ahem) I am back to needing to lose 50lbs.

Thanks for the replies. That makes me feel better. I need to stop reading the baby books.< /p>

As for weight gain, I didn't gain any weight during the first 11 weeks (because of band restriction), and then I got unfilled and gained 6 pounds in the last two weeks. In the last few days I am hungy ALL THE FREAKING TIME! I don't know if this is because I'm pregnant or unfilled (probably a combo of the both). I'm trying to make good decisions and eating lots of fruits and veggies. But yesterday, I literally HAD to eat every single hour because my stomach was growling. I almost gave up and went to the McDonalds to get a double quarter pounder with cheese, but I held on. I know I shouldn't care too much about weight gain because it's about doing what's best for the baby and not necessarily caring about my figure right now. But with my predisposition for gestational diabetes (my mother is Type I and I'm obviously overweight), I'm worried that giving in to the Reece's Peanut Butter cups isn't the best decision right now. Good luck to us all. This is a tough time, but I'm hoping it gets better.

I could but not at 13 weeks. It will come. One morning I woke up and ran my hands over my stomach and - woah - what's that hard thing on my abdomen? You may have to poke pretty hard to feel it when you're still in your first trimester. The first time my OB felt for mine, it was pretty uncomfortable.

I can feel mine if I shift some of my fat. I am 16 weeks and I have started to get all weird about it too, even though I can feel it. I have been lifting all my lower ab fat up and I can see my actual bump. I have no hope of having a cute bump anytime soon. I do hope I am at least showing a little by Christmas.

I can do this too actually.. if I suck in my gut, then lift up my pannis.. I can see the bump I would have, if I didn't have a flabby belly.

Thanks! Hey Fairy -- have you felt the baby kick yet? I think you're about 2 weeks ahead of me. I'm 16 weeks, 2 days today. I keep waiting to feel the "flutters" that are supposed to happen sometime this week. This is such a weird time in the pregnancy, when the only symptom are my tight pants, and I think, "Baby? are you still there?"

hah hah, yes believe me.. I would not know I was pregnant if I didn't get the heart doppler. I listen to the heart every other night just to make sure it's still there

Nope, I don't feel anything yet.. I keep getting things that make me wonder, but it's so light and fleeting that I don't know. I guess it's what people say 1st time moms don't recognize, or I'm just gassy or something. I felt pressure on my bladder on Friday, I had to pee constantly just from pushing on it.. so I imagine the baby was laying on my bladder that day, and has since moved.

They say it can take up to 20 weeks to feel it for first time moms.

I can feel mine if I pull my big fat belly all the way up and then push on the bum there. I don't feel very pregnant though...except for food aversions. I don't like to eat ANYTHING. I've lost 7 pounds and I hope this passes soon because I'm hungry!

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
