Fill in Kansas City

Recommended Posts

I hope someone out there can help me. I got my lap band surgery done by Dr. Ortiz in Mexico on August 29th. I am getting ready for my first fill and was told that Dr. Malley here in KC does it for bandsters who got their band outside the US. Today I called his office and found that they are booked up through the end of the year. Thus, I am looking for someone else to band me in October or November. Does anyone here know if there is a doc who does fills with fluoro in KC for people like me? *Crossing my fingers*...:girl_hug:

Hi, I took was banded in Mexico! I was banded in Feb '08, by Dr Corvala in Tijuana.

I go to the Institute for Advanced Bariatric Surgery. At the MISH center in Lenexa. It is right by I-35 and 119th St.

They are pretty expensive for fills, $385, but what else are you going to do? :girl_hug:

I tried to get into Dr Malley also, but the waitlist is just toooooo long.

The IABS phone number is 913-322-7401. They are usually pretty good at getting you in in a matter of a few days. And if I remember right, the first appt was like $500 maybe because we visited with the doc too.

Good luck and keep in touch! I don't know anyone locally that has been banded. I'm in Harrisonville

I would say so I wonder why it's so expensive I mean it's a lil needle with Water in it Omgosh....I called the Surgical Center and they are $250 a little less but still what the heck is the reason a "fill" is so expensive?!?!?!?!?

OOPS, I forgot to add that the IABS always uses fluoroscopy with fills. The fill doc is a hoot, too!

yeah, Dr Malley was going to be like $100-$150 if I remember right. But, I also didn't want to wait 3 months to get in. I called every center in the KC area and Dr Malley and IABS were the only ones that would talk to me due to the Mexico banding.

I'm sure IABS is charging me soo much bc they didn't get any money for the surgery part. Money hungry.

Anyways, I have had 3 fills, then found out just last friday that my band slipped bc I was too tight, got something stuck and pb'd too much. So, now I have to go back on 10/3 to see if them deflating my band has fixed it. Then I get to pay another $385 a fill to start over .

I'm not happy, but I don't want to lose my band either. With airlines raising the ticket costs, I might as well pay a local doc instead of flying back to mexico.:girl_hug:

WLSC is only $250 and that includes fluoro as well. I made an appointment for my first fill on Octoberr 8th. I'd still love to get into Dr. Malley, but they aren't even taking anyone since they are full until January...;(

Hey neighbors,

I'm from Kansas City too and I had my surgery done at Weight Loss Surgical Center. I had my first fill which was covered by my insurance. But I have a question for the ones that had their insurance cover their surgery...Does your insurance cover your fills and how many are they willing to cover. I like the center I think it's neat how it caters to the patients special needs:smile2:

hello Mel...I am not sure as I havne't got that far but you are covered for a year after surgery as far as fills go. I will see if my Insurance will cover the fills after I am at the end of my 1 year mark. We'll have to get together sometime...

That will be cool. I hope you're doing fine. Since I'm a little head of you on this Lap Band journey I will keep you posted about the fills.

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣
