Anyone start around 240 lbs?

Recommended Posts

I am wondering if there are nay March '08 bandsters who have a similar start weight to me---240 pounds? I am interested in how you have progressed and what you have done to get there. I am just hoping I get some insight as to why I haven't lost as much as others...thanks!

I was about 225 when I started & I am only 5'3" - that put me at just below the 40 bmi mark. I don't know if that is close to you? I didn't do any real diet prior to surgery, the doctor didn't think it was necessary. I had surgery on 3/17 and am about 163 or 164 right now. I lost weight pretty fast at first - I think mostly because I was afraid to eat much.

Now I lose about 3 to 4 pounds a month, which I know is probably not enough for some, but is fine with me. I have only had one fill and probably won't get more for now, so I do struggle at times with real hunger. But I have just tried to manage things by eating much smaller portions. I still do eat the types of foods I really like - I just don't eat as much. When I was losing more quickly, I was probably eating between 1000 and 1200 calories. I am eating a bit more than that now.

I have found that I feel better when I eat enough and really need enough calories to want to be active. I also don't lose more weight be restricting my food choices or restricting my calories too much. My body really does seem to fight back when I do that.

Now that I have rambled too much before knowing if I could help...

I had surgery on March 25th and started at 241.2 lbs. I'm a little over 5'4" tall. As of this morning, I am down 64.7 lbs (176.5 lbs.) I have been having a lot of problems since the summer with my band - a lot of throwing up, fills, unfills, making sure the band isn't prolapsed - still experiencing lots of issues right now - I think that's what's been responsible for such a "good" weight loss - I can't eat:frown:

I was banded on Jan 3rd, 2008. My high weight was 234 and I weighed in yesterday at 183. My weight loss comes in spurts. I'll lose about 8-10 lbs right after a fill (I had my 3rd about 2 weeks ago) then the scale stops but I notice a big change in clothes there after. I've lost 51 lbs and tonight I bought a pair of 14

I am 5'7 and I was 247 when I was banded March 27th. I am now 205. I am also a slower loser but some of it IS MY FAULT. I haven't yet gotten over the mental aspect of food. I still LOVE food when I am happy, sad, stressed etc., but the band helps me keep it in check.

I should have lost faster but I have a couple downfalls, maybe you have the same ones..... I do a great job eating monday - friday but I eat the foods I shouldn't on the weekends. I also haven't been working out. I really want to reach ONEderland so I need to get strict and recommit.

DON'T feel sad!!!! It's different for each and every one of us (this is the mantra I keep repeating to myself, because I often feel just like you feel)...

I was banded last St Pat's. 5'8", 249#. I've only lost 24 lbs, and I know exactly why (ice cream doesn't get stuck). No excuses, just my reality. I'm bound (banded?) and determined to get back on track and move that scale DDDDDDOOOOOWWWWWWNNNN.

Hello all! I was banded on March 7, 2008. I started at 232 pounds - I am 5'3" tall. To date (2-12-09) I have lost 48 pounds. As with all of us, I wish it were more. My new motto is - It is what it is! There is nothing I can do about the past, but I can positively go forward to the future! Keep up the good, hard work everyone! We will get to our destinations!

I started at 236 and as of this morning I am 149.4 pounds. I have lost 86.6 pounds. I lose pretty consistently but it does go in spurts. I still struggle with emotional eating. I think a big part of my losing weight has to do with a consistent exercise routine, I run at least three days a week and do weight training the other days of the week. I have pretty good restriction and have not had a fill for awhile. i had an appointment for another fill July 2nd but cancelled it as I don't think I need it yet.

Glad to meet you all!

Dottie R.

Hi all! Thought I would check in to see how everyone was doing. As for me, I am down to 171 as of today making my weight loss a total of 61 pounds! My last fill really seems to have "kicked in" as I am only able to eat small amounts at a time - something I have been waiting more than a year for! It took my last adjustment 2 - 3 weeks to make a big difference. Does anyone else have that happen to them? Even though my weight loss is slow, I know that I will NEVER be heavy again! I finally joined the gym and have been doing cardio for the past month. I actually like it! The next thing I need to do is weight-lifting to see if I can tighten some of the saggy skin! Keep up the good work, my friends!

Hi Hazel-eyes--

I started at 221 but I'm only 4' 11 1/2 so my BMI was about 43BMI. I lost 18lbs pre-surg. Surg was 3/19/08. I had the 10cc AP band. My after surg diet was very strict for the first 4 weeks (basically chicken broth and sugar free freezer pops for the first 3 wks with Protein Drinks added for 1 wks then a little egg or cottage cheese was added etc). I lost a lot of weight fairly quickly. I would say that 75% of what I lost went in the first 4 to 5 mons. I didn't exercise very much. I do eat 3 to 4 meals a day but they are small and I'm now exercising. I do believe that I have continued to lose fat and add muscle because I have clothes fitting me now that did not fit me 6 weeks ago even though I weigh the same as I did 6 wks ago. My band surg told me that because I'm so short I will not lose more until I move my butt and also build muscle to boost my metabolism -- so that's what I'm working on right now.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
