You Tube has officially freaked me out!

Recommended Posts

Hello, my name is Cari. I have been researching online for about 2 months now about the Lap Band. I just watched a video online today that showed a woman who had the lap band and lost 60lbs in 6 months, and then said she was puking all the time and could only eat like icecream and chips and stuff, and she gained a ton of weight back. Is this because of the lap band, or bc she didnt follow the rules of banding? She was blaming the band for making her sick all the time and for her not being able to eat healthy foods.....I just need to know if I get the band and if I follow the rules..that I will lose. Seems that I have heard alot of people getting food stuck and then it coming back up. Just kinda freaked me out....I plan on getting the band, and I will be commited to the lifestyle change. Thanks for the help!

Be careful watching some of those videos on youtube. Most of the ones I found that were negative were just advertisement for a surgical practice that recommends a different type surgery. Of course they want you to have a negative impression on the band so you'll consider their procedure. Is that true for the vidoe you're talking about?

I wouldn't put too much stock in what this lady said. If she was throwing up then her band was too full. You really shouldn't be throwing up at all. I haven't even once since I was banded almost 2 months ago. On average it looks like I am losing at the same rate as she did. Sometimes if a person is filled too much they will not be able to eat. But as a general rule, if you follow the guidelines, chewing, small bites, etc, you should be fine. I have "gotten stuck" a few times, but it only lasted about a minute, and it was because I didn't chew. I have learned very quickly to do that . Don't let this person's bad experience turn you off to the Lapband. Just look around here at all the success!!!

SIGH! For goodness sake! QUIT watching! LOL

IF you have your fill too tight (which you'll understand if you read around on this site) then only liquids (like broth, or milkshakes) go down. SOME people prefer to have a LOT of restriction but most don't recommend it. The point is to have adequate restriction to be able to eat a small amount (of just about any food, just no carbonation) and

remain "full" or satiated for up to 5-6 hours. Too tight and you vomit food back. Too loose and you lose the feeling of fullness sooner. That "happy medium" is referred to here as the "sweet spot". Do you really think so many people would get the band just to vomit all the time and eat milkshakes and gain weight?

If you have proper restrition (not too tight or too loose but just right) and food doesn't go down, it's because they did not take small bites and chew chew chew!

That person on you tube was at best uneducated about the band.

She didn't use it properly, so it didn't help her. Tools have to be used, you know, or they don't do you any good.

Hey pebbles the lady ate ice crem, chips and a lot of junk food that can make you gain weight whether you have the Lapband or not. She should not have gotten banded because it seems as she was not committed to the program. As for you what you should focus on is researching Lapband info and talk to your Doc and that's how you chose whether this is the right thing for you.

Once researched I knew that I wanted to commit to this because everything that I've ever tried had not worked for me. I felt like this is my last chance to start a healthier life stlye.

Like the other person said, be careful of what you watch. I will say this to you, seeing that lady and her telling her story of how she ate, it should motivate you to not want to do what she has if you decide to have the Lapband Surgery.

Good Luck

I get so tired of people writing in and saying they HAD to eat ice cream, it's all they could get down. Oh, come on. Even if you are way too tight, there is always something else besides a milkshake. A low fat, low sugar Protein Shake, perhaps?? Oh no, then I wouldn't be able to blame the band instead of myself for my failure.

LOL! I guess I missed that one, I watched the actual surgery on youtube. I thought that was cool.

Think about it... she ate chips and ice cream.. give me a break. I can understand the ice cream, as if you're too tight you may not keep down solids, but the chips? NOT!

I agree.. eating ice cream because you can't keep anything down? It's a cop out. Protein Drinks or even sugar free ice pops... are a better choice. She clearly gave up on the band.

My doctor said most of the people you see there are the ones that fail, don't listen to them. Try to find a band buddy that already got the surgery from the same doctor that you are using and is successful at their loss. That's a much better research for you than using youtube.

If you can't find one here (do a search for your doctor's name) ask your doctor if you can talk to one of his/her other patients.

My band buddy is absolutely awesome (Thanks Mindy!!) I hope you can find some one as wonderful.;)

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
