Dying for coffee!!!!!!!!!

Recommended Posts

It has been 6 1/2 months I have lost 60lbs. No I don't eat fast food ocassionally I will steall a fry or two from my daughter, but in general I would stay away; after all that is how most of us got to be heavy. meat doesn't really work for me and I haven't had bread in 7 months. The salads at fast food places might be ok.

I LOVE coffee!

If I could, I'd fill a swimming pool with Gavina vanilla Nut, and LIVE in it. I love coffee THAT much.

BUT....

I don't drink it anymore. Seriously. It's acidic, VERY acidic, and it doesn't make or keep you healthy. It's bad for you....so, I gave it up as part of my overall committment to good health.

There ARE substitutes that are very, very good, that are NOT acidic. A product called Teecino is a very good substitute. There are some very BAD substitutes out there, but there are good ones as well.

coffee won't kill ya.....but I will tell you from experience that NOTHING TASTES as good as I FEEL when I'm healthy.

Give it some thought..... :w00t:

Headhunter I really am NOT trying to stalk you and contradict you (but I think it seems that way even to me and I KNOW I'm not! ) so forgive me please....

but...

coffee isn't really all that bad, or at least not bad for everyone. In smaller amounts (they are finding) it ISNT a diuretic, and in fact it can help delay or prevent diabetes II (research is ongoing so don't everyone start chugging it) and it also helps with parkinsons. A little caffeinated coffee can help you be more mentally alert (without the sugar high and subsequent crash) and so on.

So people shouldn't be knee-jerk about coffee; for some, it is a GOOD thing, for others, maybe not.

And of course...ALL Things in moderation..

A triple shot espresso a day for me! I can admit I am addicted and this is the only source of caffeine I have. I did ask the Dr. prior to going back to it, though and he told me it is fine in moderation.

can anybody please explain what's the rationale against drinking coffee? does it damage the band (like carbonated drinks are supposed to do) or is just this stupid notion the caffeine increases appetite? from personal experience I can tell you that caffeine actually decreases appetite (there are a ton caffeine products still sold out there as hunger control supplements - eca stack anybody?). so why this prohibition?

My surgeon is cool with coffee and alcohol...in moderation (maybe that's why I like him?!). Coffee is frowned upon mostly because it can act as a diuretic and alcohol because of the empty calories. I have not had a problem with either....

Could be your doctor's preference....lots of us were never told not to consume caffeine. I don't drink a ton of it, but I do drink tea (heck, I'm a Southerner...of course I drink iced tea but I sweeten it with splenda nowadays).

I don't think soda is a no-no for caffeine. It's the carbonation that can give you a very uncomfortable bloated feeling from the carbonation!

Caffeine decreases appetite temporarily, but the rebound after it wears off can make you more hungry. Bit the band helps with that. coffee is also acidic so it bother's some people's stomachs, banded or not. I drink a large Cappuccino every morning, 7 days a week, it's part of my morning ritual. No issues here. BTW, carbonation hurting the band or stretching your stomach is a myth, IMO (but always follow the advice of the guy you will turn to if you have a problem, i.e. your local doctor). I drink beer most weekends with no issues other than the empty calories.

At my pre-op class, we were told not to drink coffee for one month post-op. The reason is because the acidity may cause you to get an ulcer where the band is stitched to your stomach. Those stitches are still healing so more prone to getting an ulcer from anything acidic. We are to stay away from other acidic foods like lemons, limes, etc. as well during the one month post-op. Anyway, this is what I was told during my pre-op class. I think its weird how every doctor has different advice. I kicked the caffeine habit a couple months ago (for a different reason - I was doing an exclusion diet) and just decided not to go back to drinking coffee (at least for now) since I knew I wouldn't be able to have it immediately after surgery.

The reson most doctors say no to caffein is because it is a diuretic and can dehydrate you faster if your Water intake isn't addequate. Also its acidic and can cause stomach upset. My doc said only Decaf :) coffee is in my jeans (I'm Cuban) and I havent had any yet because i refuse to drink decaf lol!!

My doctor said Decaf was ok so I've been able to have all the decaf I want. I know some decaf is nasty but just try different brands and you'll find one that is ok to you.

If you absolutely have to have some caffenated coffee try going "half caf" using half regular coffee half decaf and try not to overdo it. I did that the other day because I wanted a pick me up and I didnt have any problems with it. I'm a month out from surgery.

I drink coffee all the time, fat free Creamer and a dash of cinnamon. its so good. i dont know what the big deal is about ''not drinking'' coffee. sometimes it makes my stomach bubbly but thats just digestion because of the caffeine. my doc has never said anything against it. i gave up eating/drinking everything, so i think i should be able to have coffee, and a cig! i know so many health conscious banders and they still screw up their bands somehow, so i just threw my hands up and try to be careful about 95% of the time. theres no sense in being healthy, but totally bored and restricted. i got the band to LIVE and enjoy life, not be a total prude. i drink coffee, smoke cigs, and take the occasional jager shot. :P

80 pounds lost. 10 more to go. :D

best of luck to everyone!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
