Jewlo, good luck on your approval. I was denied at first and had to appeal which was approved. I was just banded this past Wednesday and still a little sore. Let us know how it goes. Maggies:shades_smile:

Does anyone know if you can change the polls? I am the starter of this thread and I thought you could change your options.

I have tri care standard which does not require pre approval. I am borderline and I worry that after doing pre op diet I will not qualify. The dr. can not give me any info. I am worried that I will end up with a huge bill if my ins does not pay. any advice.

Tricare Standard does not require a referral, but if you want them to cover it they will still have to authorize the surgery before it is performed. I believe most doctors use the weight taken at the first appointment for submission to the insurance. My doctor doesn't recommend his patients begin the preop diet until they get insurance approval though (unless a 6 month diet is required, which it isn't with Tricare). If you're borderline, begin to lose before insurance authorization, and then get denied, then you might be out of luck for an appeal since you might not weigh enough :rolleyes2:

Same thing happened to me...I gained the "6.5 lbs", went in and reweighed. Surgeon's office resubmitted the weight and I got approved. The only thing that is holding you back is the 13 lbs!

Hi, I'm going to see my PCM today to ask for a referral to the Bariactric Center. I have attended a seminar it was great! Does anyone know what I need to ask for other than the referral?

Go ahead and see if they can draw labs ( a BMP and CBC, lipid profile) and do an EKG. If you can, go ahead and schedule your psy eval. Usually it is self refer but it takes awhile to get in.

Good luck!

5'5 and my weight was 222...then had to gain 6.5 lbs so I got up to 233. I have sleep apnea (on cpap) and hypertension).

Your denial letter should have said why you were denied. They go by the medium frame of the met life chart.

All it stated was factual deniel. So I guessed that either I was under weight ( I was right in the middle of the medium section for being 100 lbs over weight) or that I my meds for high blood pressure was not documented. So I had them record my weight and BP for a week - had my Rx refilled and resubmitted. It has been over 30 days and I still do not know anything new!!!

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
