Houston, we have a problem

Recommended Posts

;) I went for my second fill yesterday. What a disaster! My port has flipped backwards. They tried everything to flip it back, used huge needles as chopsticks, pushed against my ribs to try to get it to flip, everything. Now I am scheduled for surgery on June 14th to re-open up the port area and re-suture it to the muscle. I did find out that I have a 10cc band not the 4cc band I originally thought. so that makes sence that I have little restriction and no weight loss since I have only 0.8cc in the band right now. I haven't been able to work out much with a crazier than normal work schedule and I have pulled a muscle in my left hip and have alot of pain in it to sit, stand or even lay down. I have signed up with 24 Hour Fitness. I will start working out with fellow bandster Bevlynn when she gets back from Costa Rica. I hope my hip is better. I think I hurt it moving furniture for my mom. Oh well, just had to vent...how is everyone else doing?

Tammy, so sorry to hear about your "flipped port". Hopefully this will be a quick fix and you'll be back up to speed shortly. You might want to ask your dr. when it's o.k. to do abdominal exercises. Good luck!

Thank all for the words of encouragement! I just wonder if he will be able to do a fill at that time also? Or will I have to take time off work again and drive 35 miles to get it done?

Marie, I haven't done any abdominal exercises yet, I guess I can go ahead and start them now and then ask when he fixes it when I can do them again. I just have to get this dang pain out of my left hip. It hurts to drive my 5 speed, sit, stand, and lay down. I heard my doctor called in something for pain, but it hurts to drive there...LOL!!

Good news, Dr. Benavides had a cancellation for yesterday, May 25th and I got "Flipper" put back in place..LOL They also did a fill of 1.5cc. I can feel the restriction already. They could not just flip the port over, they took me to the operating room and put me under and re-attached it with "fishing line" he said, this time. hehehe!! He said "that sucker ain't gonna move now!" He is so funny!

BTW, party at my house this weekend!!! I am my mom's caretaker and my sister is taking her to Disneyland for the next 11 days, so I will be free!!!!!!! They leave at noon tomorrow. I haven't had a break from caring for her in over two years, so I am soooooo deserving this! Hurricaine Harbour opens tommorrow and I will be there Saturday am if it doesn't rain, to lay out and chill. No swimming for me though since I had surgery again yesterday. but I will just splash off to cool down. Anyone want to join me???

I now think that I have reached my Sweet Spot with the 1.5 cc he put in. I can't really do any solid foods, more solid than pudding, and am dropping the weight off. Is this right or am I over full?

Eventually the soft food syndrome will catch up with you and your weight loss will slow down, since soft foods are higher in calories and travel through the band much quicker cthen solids you will eventaully find yourself hungrier quicekr as time goes on. In my opinion if you can not eat solids, then you are too tight, the band was designed for solid food intake not soft foor intake , according to the Inamed handbook I got, it clearly states " your meals should be high in Protein and Vitamins. Solid food is more important then liquid food or soft food" . I do not mean to discourage you but to enlighten you with the facts. Not being able to eat solids is not healthy and not reccomended for us bandsters. Try starting off slow with a food like tuna fish or some dark meat chicken . Have you tried eating foods more solid then pudding? If so what happens?

If I eat anything, even Top Ramen crushed into tiny pieces, I PB. Not bad mind you, but I PB on anything. Actually I PB'd last night on sugar free Tapioca. Wen I PB, it is usually slime and a little food. The second and third time is partly food.

La madam, you are not discouraging me! Not in the least. I mean, I like the weight loss but I don't want to do anything that will hurt me. Thanks for the advice, it's always good to know that I have friends here that have been thru what I/everyone else has been thru!!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
