I miss....

I have not eaten bread since surgery and until today it has not bothered me. Today however I am wishing I could have a fresh bread roll with ham, cheese, onion and avocado mmmmmmm.

I always get stuck on bread and end up PB'ing. So bread is the enemy to me....everytime I crave it, I think of the pain when it gets stuck then the craving goes away.

I really miss chugging water!!!

Yep, bread. The dodgy weather we've had here has had me craving for chip butties (chips in fresh bread with lots of butter)!!! mmmmmm

I have had two nasty experiences with bread getting stuck. I havent PB'd yet, but I don't want to experience that either. Perhaps I don't have a hankering for bread now because of my close calls. :P

You could always substitute the onion and avocado and have a toasted ham and cheese sandwich, the people that cant have bread should try toasted. I know I wont be able to eat bread afterwards but I'm hoping I can at least still have a vegemite and cheese toasted sandwich maybe once every month or so. Oh and EmmaF I'm definetly going to miss chip butties as well lol =(

Hi Nat. Have you tried to eat bread? You may be one of those who can eat it. I have no problem with it so far, but find I can't eat a lot of fruit - go figure.

I have not tried bread yet but alot of the old food that i used to love I just hate now, when you have to chew chew chew it totally changes the texture and taste I dont know why. I might try some egg on toast on the weekend. I have not been much good with fruit either banana got stuck, apple got stuck I have had strawberries and grapefruit no worries. Need to get more fibre and my Iron levels have taken a nose dive according to my GP but those I can live with when the insulin levels and hormones have normalised.

mmm bread. I miss scoffing a freshly baked subway sandwich with lots of sauce and double meat. he he.

I can eat a few bits of bread. Only about 1/6th a slice of bread. I never really was a big fan of bread though but i must say, the smell of fresh bread right now is a means to torture me.

Im at the stage where Im off alot of food now - i think its because Ive spewed from almost everything at some point - so now my brain associates it with being sick and its just not appealing. I went to woolies yesterday to do the groceries with my bf - who has one hell of an appetite - anyway - I found the only thing i wanted was Soup, and salad veggies and yoghurt. The things that dont make me sick and are good for me. I just dont want anything else.

And it was good, said the Lord!

Toast is the only way, for me it has to be really well toasted (basically no moisture left in the bread to make it doughy) but as for the cheese, I tried toasted cheese, I double toasted the bread to make sure it was extra crunchy then I got a glob of stringy stretchy cheese stuck for at least 15 mins ... maybe I did something wrong, but my reccomendation for toast topping is well toasted good quality bread , ripe avocado, salt, pepper and a squeeze of lemon juice! always use good quality bread, multigrain or sourdough, mainstream brands or bakery franchise brands I have found are too doughy.

Who would have throught we could spend an entire diaitribe on BREAD!!!!:biggrin:

Some people can eat bread after. The best thing is to wait a month or so, so that everything settles down and then try a very small piece. If it gets stuck, then you'll know for sure you can't have it.

I miss good 'ol Peanut Butter and jelly sandwiches. I definitely can't eat them or I will be very uncomfortably horribly sick.

I did find a yummy substitute however. Reduced fat/calorie triscuit crackers with a baby spoon portion of Peanut Butter and a smear of sugar free strawberry jelly. 2 of these and I am not hungry,the calories are very low and my craving is satisfied.

are triscuits only available in the US? We in Aus never got into the whole Peanut Butter and jam sandwich thing.

I am not sure if trisuits are in aus. Basically they are a hearty, fibrous and crunchy cracker.

Actually I have traveled quite a bit internationally, and sometimes when I am abroad I am looking for things that are more american to eat. I like different cuisines but I don't like to eat everything different more than 80% of the time. I have never seen triscuits abroad but I am pretty sure I would have noticed them if they were in the same shops I was in (back in the pre-banding days where my stomach ruled me instead of vice versa).

I know Peanut Butter itself is unpopular in some countries and a little harder to find. There were times I didn't see it at all in Turkey and Germany, but there were other things like a chocolate spread and something called nutell. I didn't like these other options when I tried them. I think we just become accustomed to certain tastes.

My husband is originally from Turkey and he does not care much for peanut butter. I have never met a Turkish person who doesn't despise peanut butter (this is anecdotal of course). I asked some Turkish friends what is it about peanut butter or PB&Js that they don't like, because I know they like peanuts. They said that they really don't eat combinations of salty and sweet. It can be salty or sweet separately but should never be both.

Hmmm . . . I used to love payday candy bars just for that reason. Isn't it strange how we develop a liking for such specific tastes?

mmmmmmm, garlic bread! I don't get banded until 7/22 but gave up bread 3mo ago, Yep, garlic bread is what I miss the most. :thumbup:

      Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs. 
      I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm. 
      I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order. 
      My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

      Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
      Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
      A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.

      I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
      Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

      Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
      I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
