Scheduled for Surgery in July but really scared.

Recommended Posts

First let me introduce my self my name is Robert I'm 32 years old and I have decided to take the plunge and have the surgery done by doctor Kirshenbaum in Denver Colorado. I hope that I am posting this in the right forum. I am scared :scared2:for the fact that I don't know what to expect after the surgery. I have tried many diets :thumbs_down:but always seem to end up going back to my original ways of eating. I had the best success with weight watchers but then like I said I went back to my old habits and gained my weight back. Is there any advice that you all would be able to give me? Also if any of you have had the experience with Dr. Kirshenbaum please let me know what you thought.

Thanks

Robert

Robert,

I had my surgery on 3/31 and it was the best decision i ever made. i also had alot of difficulty losing weight prior to surgery. the lapband really gave me the motivation. since surgery i have lost about 27 lbs. by seeing some weight loss this has given me the incentive to keep it going. good luck!

Robert, Of course this is a scary decision. Heck I took one of my friends to a seminar and was very supportive of her gastric bypass surgery and was astonished as to why she was scared when it was her week to have it done. Well, when it came to my turn to have a lap band done ...I was SCARED. April 17 is my new birthday because I was banded and have now lost 31 pounds. For me this is the best decision I could have ever made. I am proud of you and you will be in my prayers along with all the others who are with us on this journey. Please do the liquid diet because it does prepare you mentally and physically for what to expect when you see food and don't react "normally." I am on solid food but am also taking the liquid diet supplies from the surgeon's office for Breakfast.

Feel free to ask me any questions regarding my experiences after the surgery. I've talked to many folks and several of us had the same experiences.

Take care and let us know how you are doing.

Best regards,

Dolores

I think what scares me the most is that I'm going to want to eat the same way that I do now but know that I can't. By making the pouch smaller than your stomach does it tell your brain that you are not as hungry?

Thanks

Robert

Richard -- yes, once you have fill, that constant hunger for food will be turned off. There will be times in the beginning (after the swelling goes down but before you get filled) that you are really hungry, but once filled to the right amount, you can reasonably expect to feel satisfied after eating a small amount of food.< /p>

It's wonderful.

HI Robert,

My Dr. told me the nerves that sense your stomach being full are located at the top of the stomach (close to where the small pouch is). I had my surgery on 4/14 but have not had my first fill yet. I am eating more than I did right after surgery but still less than before the surgery. I will have my first fill on 6/12. You will be able to tell if you cross the line and eat too much and believe me, you won't want to do it again, it is very uncomfortable. Kinda like eating 2 Thanksgiving dinners in one setting, with a golf ball thrown in for good measure! Trust the process it has worked for thousands of people and it will work for you. Good luck and enjoy the journey.

Sally

I too had sucess with WieghtWatchers, achieving life member status, but I gained it back nearly as fast as I lost it.

My surgery was practically a non event. Outpatient; I was home in my chair by 2:00 in the afternoon. I can't recall any pain, though I'm sure there must have been some. I'm a having a little difficulty now after about 7 months (see my post under LapBand Complications) but there's no way I'd wish it undone.

Dr. Neal in Olympia, Washington has my complete confidence.

Thanks everyone for the good advice. I have read many times in these forums that some people will eat and have a blockage. Does this feel like you are choking or just that nothing is going down.

Thanks

Robert

Robert, when you eat something too quickly or don't chew your food -- yes you may feel uncomfortable. When this happens to me the best I can relate it to is drinking soda too quickly and it feels caught going down. A fellow bander showed me a little movement or "dance" she does an d believe it or not it does help. You will feel full and satisfied with the lap band (at least that is my experience). I have not had a fill and really don't feel like I need one since I've lost 34 lbs in 5 weeks after surgery. The surgeon's PA told me that there are cells located on or about/near the placement of the band and they send signals to your brain that you are full. Hope this helps! Best of luck,

It's funny I found this post that was from a ways back. I never went through with the surgery then but I am now scheduled in 3 days November 4th for surgery in Alb. NM. I am so ready for this i can't wait.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
