The Canadian Process:

Recommended Posts

Alrighty, I've been banded, as of yesterday. I'm taking Demerol and Gravol every four hours, not because I'm in pain, but just in case! I actually have had little to no discomfort so far. I'm walking around, sitting in different positions, I slept through the night, it's all been good so far.

BUT, I'm SO hungry! I'm on clear fluids until Wednesday, then full fluids and I don't know if I can do it. I'm scared to stray off of the diet, because I don't want to harm the band. On the other hand, I found myself sucking on a cookie an hour ago... then I felt horrible for doing it. Now I'm terrified I've screwed something up.

Geesh! I'll be happy when recovery is over and done with! Anyone have tips for getting through this time?

Stick with the post op diet. Tell yourself (and it is true) that you will have spent a lot of money just to mess up your band for a cookie! Try Jello (which is a clear), take 1/2 c. broth every hour, sip some juice for flavour, lots of Water, but STICK TO IT! It is important for the band to settle in ordr for the surgery to be successful. Hang in the BettyB - We have done it and you can too!

Betty Boop, you know its gonna be hard for the next 6 weeks until you start getting fills.

Try your very best to stick to the instructions given.. Its the best way to avoid complications and you don't want that.

Cookies are not leaving the planet.... just wait!

Walk around as much as you can, take the drugs if you need them, if you don't just go slow and don't push it too much.

DON'T STRAY it is only a few weeks of your life... you can do it. I used to freeze juices so I could get the sensation of chewing something solid in there I really missed chewing a lot. I wasn't overly hungry for most of the liquid phase but that was just me.

Keep going

Heather

Alrighty, it's day 3. I feel incredble! Gas pains are almost all gone (they were the worst) and only one of the incisions hurt on and off. I haven't taken any drugs since this morning (I'm trying to get off of them by tomorrow so I can return to work soon).

But, the hunger is getting WORSE. I'm doing the broth, Water and juice thingm but I honestly do not know if I'm going to make it to Wednesday. I think I'll call the clinic tomorrow and ask if I can bump up my full Fluid phase... I fear if I don't, I will end up cheating and damaging the band.

Did anyone have gurgling like gas moving through their belly after the surgery? Not painful, but weird feeling? Or hunger growls?

My stomach makes really funny noises now. That and burping (where I never really did it before) are the fun side effects. They don't bother me though.

Please, please just have more juice or broth etc. They give us these diets for a reason, not to punish us and you really want to stick to this. Drink more Water too. Are you sure you are really hungry or just missing eating? That is sometimes that part that we confuse with hunger.

Hang in there and keep yourself busy and you'll soon forget about food (at least for a little while)

Mary

Thanks Guys, you're awesome! I have not cheated... I can't focus on anything else, so time is going by REALLY slowly, but I've read through this entire site, scared myself straight and am drinking only Endura and Water. I start full liquids on Wednesday, so only one and a half days left to go!!!!! :rolleyes2:

Thanks for alll of the help and support. I can't WAIT to start the real work and finish the recovery stage!

Way to go! Look how well you've done already.

It'll be nice to advance to the next stage.

Take care,

When I finally graduated to full fluids, my husband got me lobster bisque from a fancy restaurant nearby. I thinned it with a little milk and strained it to make sure there weren't any "bits" in it.

Unfreakin' believably good.

Maybe you can plan to have something really special for yourself when you graduate to full fluids too.

That is a great idea. I like Red Lobster's clam chowder & my husband would definately go get it for me. :biggrin2:

You have to make every effort to get your mind off food. Drink plenty of clear warm broth. The TLBC site has some ideas for post op patients. Exercise will take your mind off hunger. Go for a walk around the block. Exercise has an ability to dim the appetite. Take a warm bath while you soak read. Anything to take your mind off food. You can do it. You had the courage to get the band you have the courage to go without food for a few weeks. You can do it.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
