Change! Surrender! Let go! or else....

I read a lot of resistance to change in here. The band won't make us thin-- it is just a TOOL to help us make the CHANGES in our behavior that made us obese.

If we insist of throwing our favorite high calorie recipes into a blender and drinking them, we are not really changing, are we?

If we whine about giving up caffeine or carbonation, we are resisting even small changes.

I know it's going to be reeeeeally hard for me to eat "like a baby," to chew my food til it's goo, to put my little baby spoon and fork down between itsy bitsy teensy bites and wait an interminably long time for the next bite...

but when I took this step, I knew it was the best way for me to live a healthier, HAPPIER, richer life.

My old ways of being let me lose 1,000 pounds and regain 950.

I'm ready for change.

And that's why I'm voting for Obama.

LOL, great post. I too read a lot of posts from people who are still eating a ton of carbs and wondering why they aren't losing. I sit and scratch my head and wonder how anyone can miss all the posts about eating Protein first, veggies second and THEN carbs if you can fit them in. This is for EVERY meal, not just dinner. Protein, protein and more protein. Preferably in solid form as shakes go through the stoma easily and you will get hungry right away. The band will work but you have to feed it the right things. I think a lot of people go into this thinking that after being banded they can resume eating all the things they ate before but less of it. While this is true, it probably isn't going to help your weight loss very much. I love rice, potatoes, bread and Pasta. You have no idea how much. Even I didn't realize how much until I had to give them up for my pre-op diet. Holy smoke. I will eventually be able to have them again in moderation, but as long as I want to be successful in losing weight I need to drastically reduce them from my diet. One day they will be a part of my food intake. But not right now and probably not for the next year. In my mind, it's a small price to pay.

Getting off my soap box now.

Now, as someone who has joked about being a coffee drinker and not wanting to give up my java, let me state that I WILL give it up. albeit grudgingly but I WILL give it up, atleast until the doc tells me I can drink it again, then I will drink 1-2 cups instead of my normal 4-6 cups, if I even want to at that point. I mean after 3months coffee free whats the point again?

I am more then ready to make these changes, I can honestly say with dieting the changes seemed so hard and unattainable because I didn't HAVE to. I know with the band I HAVE to make changes or they gotta go in and take the darned thing out. I dislike hospitals and docs just enough to make those changes stick. LOL

This is a great post! I totally agree that we are all committing to a life change, nothing that is worth doing is a quick fix!

For a bit of a funny story, when I went in for my two-week follow up a week or so ago I heard the funniest thing! There was a woman in the room next to me who was explaining to the dietician what she was eating and she mentioned blending up chicken strips! Of course, the dietician made the comment that chicken strips are fried and she really shouldn't be eating those types of foods! The woman was stunned and I couldn't help but laugh to myself while I was waiting for the Doc to come in!

We were all provided with EXTENSIVE written documentation in additon to the meetings with the dietician pre-op so it was astonishing to me that this woman claimed not to know it was probably a bad decision! She also mentioned having cotton candy and whole milk! It was just crazy! But it made me feel better that I knew I was on the right track!

15 lbs that is unreal I know you feel like you are dreaming and you will wake up to find it not real. I think if my weight comes off that fast I will have to pinch myself. Keep us posted on your progress.

I went to an info seminar last spring and was very excited. However, upon discussing the lap band with my family they encouraged me to try a diet again, so I'd know that I'd given it my best shot. I've gotta tell ya, I didn't last 2 weeks on the diet. Here I am again, I really think the Lap Band is the tool that will help me succeed! I need to be realistic that it's not a magic pill, that it will require hard work and determination, but I will be held accountable and have the support system that I don't have trying to just "diet"... I've been reading through the board and I loved this thread. Just thought I'd join in to say so.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
