I am so upset after reading an article about a new bill that is before the house that would make it illegal for restaurants to serve obese people in Mississippi. What country do we live in now? I couldn't find the standards of what they would consider obese, but how would they enforce it? Where does it end, monitoring everything that fat people buy from the grocery store too? I'm just shocked and appalled!!!

A good idea. Afterall, they have already banned smokers from smoking.

Um, this already exists. Not for alcoholics, but it is illegal in many states for a bar to serve drinks to someone who is obviously impaired.

I'm actually not that upset by the "turning away the obese" legislation. From a personal freedom standpoint, yeah, it is facist. However, of all people, we should know the benefit of having a temptation removed. the band doesn't work for me because of some magic. It works for me because the food that caused me problems in the past - Pasta and bread - I am physically incapable of eatnig now. There is no temptation and I don't feel deprived, because I know it is impossible for me to eat those things. If I knew it was impossible for me to go into a Mickey D's, then I wouldn't miss that either. That's the difference between dieting and the band. You can always slide on a diet. You really can't on the band, unless you gorge on ice cream or high-calorie drinks. I didn't have an issue with those before the band, so maybe that part is naturally easy for me.

My point was, if a bar can refuse to serve drinks to someone who is obviously impaired (they didn't have to drink there; they could have come to the bar drunk already...happens all the time), then why is it such a stretch of the imagination for a restaurant to refuse to serve food to someone who is obviously well fed already? I understand the logic, even though I don't condone it. Even another example is the fact casinos can and do refuse to allow addicted gamblers into their casinos, once they are put on the "do not allow" list.

This is just obnoxious. I mean, really, we live in the USA or at least most of us do. I don't want to live in a socialized state. If you want that crap then go to one of those countries. The USA was based on personal freedom. The government keeps picking away at our rights. Pretty soon they will be in our homes, bedrooms, bathrooms, etc. What a nightmare!

I don't want the government in my life and I don't need their help. Frankly, just leave me the heck alone!

The slight difference is that you and only you decided to put the band around your stomach to help yourself lose weight, the government didn't make you, or a bill or anybody else for that matter, if I'm not mistaken, I think you have stated to be pro-choice... because it should be the woman's right... (disregard this comment if I'm wrong, please.. )but how is it ok for someone to want to protect a woman's right to do whatever they want with their bodies, beause it's their bodies.....(which I respect your view, even if I disagree...)but it's ok for that same person to understand restriction on the amount of food that someone wants to eat.... hey, it's their bodies as well....makes no sense to me..:eek:...

True, I am pro-choice, and also I was trying to be the "devil's advocate" on the whole banning of obese people suggestion. I did call it facist and I did not condone the suggestion; however, I do understand it. On a weird level it does make sense, but implementation of it would have to be balanced with civil liberties, which would mean it would and SHOULD fail. People who have never been fat probably don't see the harm in such legislation. A lot of them just think, "eat less, you lazy ba$tards, and we'll welcome you in no problem." Of course we all know it is not that easy.

It is a pretty ridiculous idea. I don't see how it can compare to refusing to sell alcohol to someone who is intoxicated or banning smoking. Smoking is not a life-sustaining need. Drinking is not a life-sustaining need. Eating is a life-sustaining need.

If I were a smoker and smoked around others, I could cause them health problems due to second-hand smoke. If I were a drinker, I could seriously harm or kill someone by driving drunk. If I go to a restaurant and overeat, the only person I am hurting is myself.

I just don't see the comparisons.

That's insanity. It just sheds light on the discrimination against heavy people. I feel it and have felt it like most of you have in your lives. What's next? Do they force us into concentration camps to get thin? feed us with slingshots through a chain link fence? And knowing the nature of our society it won't end there, once you can discriminate against a body type you open a floodgate of possible discriminations. Discriminating against body type and etc. is already happening. Just a few months ago I had someone tell me they were told they could not even enter a shoe store because her feet were too fat and other customers would be uncomfortable. It happens.
