Surgery is in 2 1/2 weeks. Haven't been doing the diet the surgeon gave me. I told her that looked awful and she just said, "don't gain any more weight between now and the surgery". I haven't been paying attention and might have gained some; i'm not sure.

Tomorrow I want to do what I need to do to get on track. They only require a liquid diet 24 hours before surgery. liquids only one week post-op then mushies. They seem liberal compared to others.

What is the fastest way to shrink my liver? Low carb? Low Fat? Low Calorie?

Any suggestions?

Marieze

oops just read the end and saw this was an old post. Glad your surgery went well marie

I also think it depends on how much weight you carry in your stomach area. I only had to do liquids 24hrs prior to surgery which I was thankful for! My surgeon said I was the first person she has ever did this surgery on that had NO FAT around any of their organs! I told her that's cause my butt took it all! :wink2:

i am having trouble sticking to a 2 week liquids only, broth, Tomato juice, miso Soup, diet Jello, 3 Protein Shakes, NO food, of any kind, i gave in on the 5th day, opened Water can of tuna drained and ate, today can tuna , and no fat chicken. Protein, PROTEIN, PROTEIN, 225, 5' 4". sorry, want to follow his regimen, but its a little tooo strict, i was starving not to mention passing out in the morning (well, ok had to lay down for an hour, this was after taking the Vitamin pills he wants me to take, i asked him about the weakness, tingling in hands and had to lay down and he said Vitamins won't do that to you, go to your personal doctor. well im sorry but this didn't start until after i started his regiment. he has a fabulous reputation but this is a bit much and i don't read where ANYONE is having to follow this strict of a regimen. anyone out there? i need to talk to someone.

I had a strict regiment but ended up not doing the Medifast pre-op diet. I called the nutritionist and told her it was making me lightheaded and I have hypoglycemia as it is. So, I went to a low-carb, high Protein diet. I ate literally less than 15 carbs per day. Lots of turkey, chicken, etc. Not fatty meats. I dropped 15 lbs in the 2 week pre-op PLUS my liver was good and flat they said. :tongue2:

Oh - and cut out any sugar. That also does it. No soda, either. That will make you bloat. I bought Sara Lee deli slices of turkey and practically lived on those and slices of low-fat cheese.

Good luck! It will get here faster than you know it and it will be the most amazing thing. I LOVE my band!

My understanding is that it depends on your BMI... if you are over like a 47 or 48 then you need to do the liver shrinking diet.... if you are lower than that, it could actually be the wrong thing to do the LSD.... did your doctor tell you that you needed to shrink your liver? 1-2 weeks is all you need of the LSD if your BMI is high.... if you need the specific diet, I can email you the one recommended from my doctor... however it is not a recommendation from me, just passing on what I will be doing prior to surgery. Send me a private message if you would like me to send you the diet...

I have followed the pre op diet for 4 weeks and unfortunately had two episodes this past week with a few cheats... My surgery is next Thursday and so far I have lost 31.5 pounds... My Surgeon had requested that I lose 26 pounds. I am starting to really stress that my liver hasn't shrank enough.. I think stress is an understatement, I am in complete panic! Can anyone shed light on if there is a direct link between weight loss and liver shrinking. I know it seems obvious but I have read a few people say that they only lost 5 pounds before the surgery but the Surgeon was happy with their liver shrinkage.

I lose weight quick by only eating steak and tomatoes. I drink a glass of milk too. 2-3 days of that slides any extra weight I've put on. I drink lots of Water. For me that diet is like a diuretic

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
