How to handle eating out?

Recommended Posts

Another great restaurant meal is a totally loaded baked potato (period). It is wonderful and will fill you to the brim. You feel like you are really doing something scandalous....but a loaded baked potato by itself without anything else isn't but around 300 or so calories.

Dude, I went out with my friend over the weekend to a steakhouse and that's what I ordered, the loaded baked potato. She had ribs, baked macaroni and cheese, steak fries, not to mention the salad beforehand. After eating my potato, I was so stuffed. It's not only totally yummy and feels like you're cheating, but it's also filling and like you said, not too bad. :welldoneclap:

I've had good luck with taking the tiny bites, eating slow, chewing a lot and taking the rest home in a doggy bag.

I had my mom and dad visiting for 3 weeks at Christmas. For every meal I had to sit down and 'eat' with them, I would postpone and then eat VERY slow. If they questioned why I didn't eat more, I just said my stomach was bothering me. People won't usually push you to eat more (if at all) if they think you are going to be sick.

Good luck!

It sounds like the main gist of your question is how to hide your surgery from your friends, not how to eat out with a band. If that's the case, just tell them you are trying to eat less or you are trying to lose weight, if they ask. Both statements are true. For goodness' sake don't eat more than you want to fool your friends--that is so counterproductive!

My husband and I eat out all the time. We have gotten over the fear of feeling "cheap" because we order so little. In fact, I'v gotten proud of it. Why should the people you are paying to bring you food make you feel bad about not overeating?

One thing I do, however, is overtip. I figure the waitperson is working just as hard to bring my little appetizer than s/he would to serve me a full meal, so I don't do the percentage thing for the tip; I tip what I would have if I had had a regular meal.

I agree! NO ONE in my family or at work knows about my surgery (though most of my friensd DO know) and when I eat only about 1/4 what I used to eat I just tell people the truth: that I am watching what I eat, learning to chew slowly and appreciate the flavor of food. I used to feel like a failure if my plate wasn't 'clean' at the end of the meal... I grew up with the whole 'Clean Plate Club' mentality... and it now annoys the CRAP out of me to see my friends and siblings teaching this same damaging behavior to their kids...buts that another rant all together.

I also tip more now, because I spend less on my meal, and I think overall I just ENJOY dining out more than I used to...

I eat almost every single meal out - and have since Day 5 after being banded. I haven't ever looked back. It is so rare that a restaurant (even fast food which I don't care for) doesn't have something band-friendly.

Now 2 more of my pals are also banded (so that's a total of 6 good friends that also have LapBands) so we go out, split an appetizer and each have a cup of Soup (Plus since I have a glass of wine or a martini, I'm still in the 'social swing' of things. Nobody notices, really.)

Since LapBanders can eat most foods in moderation or smaller portions, I rarely feel limited. People really aren't paying attention to what we eat / or don't eat - unless WE focus attention on it. The Soup of the Day is always a good choice, as are Baked Potatoes as mentioned above. Seafood is almost always a winner for us Bandster folks. Since I don't eat pork or beef (nor did I eat it before being banded) I can always find a yummy appetizer and/or a satisfying soup for my meal.

I usually order a "starter" or appetizer course as my main dish entree, and I generally start with a cup of the soup of my choice.

I eat Breakfast, lunch, dinner, and beyond with my band - and we've yet to have 'an incident' at a restaurant that I couldn't handle.

Remember this band is going to be an accent to your life - not a hindrance. You'll get the hang of it, I promise.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
