Does anyone else feel like their CPAP is adding to their discomfort? I swear, I fill up with gas during the night because of the mask. The last two nights I have had to take it off and sit up the rest of the night in a chair just to catch some sleep. Maybe I'm crazy, just wondering if anyone else was experiencing the same.

Weird. Mine is giving me no more trouble than it ever has. Maybe you should call your doc.

Hi there,

I've not yet been banded, but I am a nurse and use CPAP on patients all the time in ICU. We usually have to put a tube into the stomach to decompress all the air, so what you are saying makes perfect sense. How much weight have you lost? It might be a good idea to see your resp specialist - you never know, you might not need as high support at night now ;)

Hope you can sort it out, it must be very uncomfortable.

I slept without it last night and my husband said that I didn't snore. I felt so much better when I woke up, I was able to stay in bed all night. I will have to go in. I hate the thought of another sleep study, AGUHH!!!!

I realized this morning that my reply wasn't entirely accurate. I'm not having a gas problem like you, but I am waking up with the driest mouth I have ever experienced. This has been happening most morning since surgery. My cpap has a Water reservoir that I keep filled, so I don't understand why I'm drying out. But, at least it's not gas and can be cured with a swig of water.

Hi Suzanne,

I'm glad to hear that you slept last night and so did your hubby! Maybe you can see the specialist and you don't need it anymore courtesy of the lapband. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

Sweet dreams!

not sure if you have a full face mask or just the one that covers your nose, but it sounds to me like if you just have the nasal part covered and your mouth is drying out that you are possibly mouth breathing in the night which would cause the drying.

I haven't had a dry mouth problem with mine, I have however gulped air and sometimes wake up in the morning with air in my stomach, which usually comes out as soon as I sit up.

talk about discomfort...I have had mine for 4+years now and i've used it unless than half of the time. I did change to the breeze, which helped alittle. I have wake up with it on anyways. I just redid my sleep study and I'm still on the lowest level (4). I sleep well on my sides, really the left. However, my sinus problems worsen with the cpap. I hate it but my dr won't do surgery until I have used it 4 wks straight before surgery and all through surgery and after until further notice. my husband doesn't say a word to me when I have it on. yes...my mouth is dry too every morning.

I'm confused, how is the CPAP related to lap band?

I'm confused, how is the CPAP related to lap band?

CPAP is related to the lapband because it is a tool to treat a co-morbisity issue. I mean, a lot of fat people have sleep apnea. We just have too much flesh everywhere and on a lot of us that extra flesh can close up our windpipes as we try to sleep.< /p>

Is it directly related to the lapband, no, but it is something that the lapband indirectly affects. The more weight we lose, the less relient on the CPAP we may become. How we gulp air may affect our CPAP usage at night, etc. And for those of us lucky ones, we may be able to discontinue use of our CPAP's after we've met our goal weight.

Does any of this help?

I have been using the c-pap and I agree I wake up in the night burping lots of air and I have noticed that my nose is stopped up.

Definitely helps! I have apnea, and used to use one when I was younger... hopefully the weight will take some of the strain off. Do you use one even if/when you get thin? Thanks!!!

Hi there,

I am unbanded still, but I am a nurse. Some people might be able to come off night time CPAP after losing weight. sleep apnea is common in overweight people, so when the weight comes off, it sometimes goes away.

CPAP can cause air to fill up the stomach, due to the positive pressure of the air. I commonly see this in ICU and we usually need to decompress the air in the stomach by inserting a gastric tube into the stomach. This happens even in thin people who have breathing problems. I can imagine how uncomfortable it would be in patients with a smaller stomach and hope that you all don't need it once you get closer to goal.

I hope to be banded in late Jan/Feb, so wish me luck.

Hope this helps,

Jen

Okay, so I went w/o using it a few night now that I have dropped almost 20 lbs. Last night my hubby woke me up b/c I was snoring and he said I stopped breathing like I used to, so I put it back on. Four hours later, I woke up in agony b/c my gut was filled with air. It must be filling up my pouch. I'm concerned b/c I was just banded last week and I don't want it to disrupt my recovery. I got so worked up over the pain and then the realization that it might be making my band slip that I couldn't go back to sleep. My dr. isn't open until the 2nd, but that will be my first call.

definatly sounds like time for another sleep test.

Being a CPAP user for 12 years I know what your going through. once when i lost around 100 lbs My cpap started getting uncomfortable waking up with a stomach full of air. Which promptly came up as soon as I sat up. My other half still jokes about the burps that had teeth. Or that took 2 minutes to finish. lol.

If your still drying out with a passive humidifier then you might not be getting enough fluids daily, the humidity in your home is to low (common in winter) If the humidity in the house drops below 65 for me my skin dries out and so does my nose bad.

Or you need a heated humidifier. Allot of times you really have to fight to get heated ones cause insurance companys don't like to cover them but its worth it.

The 6 or so degrees that the air drops in temp because its moving can really wreck havoc on your sinuses which have to work twice as hard to heat/moisturize the air as It passes through.

If you have allot of weight to lose expect for more sleep tests. I know they aren't pleasant but you shouldn't have to suffer with poor sleep.

My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
