Meal Times and Coffee

Recommended Posts

I am 1 month post op from Gastric Sleeve and am wondering what time everyone gets started eating and drinking Water? I am on the soft foods stage and getting about 50-60g of Protein in a day and 64oz of water. I really want to start adding in a protein coffee but think I need to get up earlier in the day or use that as my Breakfast meal.

Can anyone share the meal schedules with me?

During the school year, I wake up at 5:30 to get my kids ready and usually drink a Protein Shake on the way to drop off around 7:30, 8. This is when I would have my coffee + collagen mixed in. The shake is my breakfast. I get home, do my exercises and cleaning and then eat lunch around noon. dinner is usually on the early side around 5:30. I like giving my body enough time to digest before bed. If I get hungry between meals, I have a little cheese, yogurt or mixed nuts. Water consumption starts first thing in the morning. I have no issues drinking before I eat, but I wait the 30 minutes after.

I'm a teacher so my eating schedule is pretty set. My breakfast is a Protein Shake with caffeine. My lunch time is usually between 12:30 and 1:15. When I get home I'll either have dinner right away and a healthy snack at around 8 PM, or I'll have a healthy snack and then dinner at about 7 PM. Sometimes, If I have a calorie/protein deficit at the end of the day, I'll add another healthy snack. As for Water, I'm drinking that all day, also ensuring I get a min. of 64 oz.

I am almost 2 years out:

First thing in the morning (6-ish) I eat something very small (>100 cal) in order to get my meds down, take meds, wait 30 minutes to drink anything else, and that first thing is usually a coffee with a scoop of collagen in it. Over the next couple hours I usually try to drink 32 oz of Water or some similar no-calorie Fluid.

Mid-morning I have a small breakfast, or sometimes wait for lunch. Today it was a 1/4 of a half-baguette with ham, cheese, and mustard on it. (Total calories: around 250. The bread is 90.). Wait 30 minutes, start working on a second 32 oz of fluids.

Mid-afternoon (2:00 pm or so), I have a snack that comes in around 150 calories. Today it was some imitation crabmeat and cucumbers with a spicy dipping sauce.

I have dinner with my husband between 5 and 6; Dinner is usually around 300-400 calories (tonight it will be chicken tikka masala with cauliflower rice). I also try to finish yet another 32 oz of fluid before bed, which is early.

I do snack in the evening partially because we eat dinner so early; my evening snack resembles the afternoon snack, usually veggies with some kind of Protein component like a dip or some cheese/lunchmeat, and I try to keep it under 200 calories.

Total for the day around 1100. 96 oz of water, one cup of coffee.

I have a delayed eating schedule. I don’t work any more which makes it easier to manage. I don’t have breakfast until around 8:30/9 because it doesn’t seem to sit as well earlier in the day. I ‘mid morning snack’ at around 1pm, mini snack at 3ish, lunch at around 4pm, dinner at about 6/6:30pm & final snack (protein bar) at 7:30ish. One thing about this whole experience has been to realise my old eating routines (like breakfast at 6am, etc.) didn’t work for me at all & I feel so much better for starting my day later & eating regularly.

I drink all day & night. I keep Water by my bed & drink every time I get in or out of bed (which can be a few times as I pee a lot 😁). I drink in the car (sip when I get in & out, at traffic lights, etc.)

PS - I watched a medical documentary last year that advised that coffee can inhibit the absorption of Iron by 70 or more percent. So if you’re going to do coffee as part of your breakfast routine, may be best to leave your iron supplement,if you take one, to later in the day,

@Arabesque So glad you mentioned the iron/caffeine discrepancy. This morning, I went back to work and had a Protein Shake with caffeine, but I also take my Iron in the morning after breakfast. Now I know to switch my Calcium to the morning, and my Iron to the evening. Thank you!:D

Then the children and I do our homework using https://essays.edubirdie.com so as not to get stuck for a long time. Then we get some free time. I like giving my body enough time to digest before bed. I'm so afraid that I'll also need to follow a certain diet. Right now, I'm just trying to drink more Water and cut out other beverages. I understand that it's a necessary step and I need to plan my meals, rather than going all day without eating and then bingeing in the evening like I used to do since college, because I would come home late.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
