Hi! Anyone else scheduled for surgery in July of 2023? Let's talk!

How are you? How's your process going? What are you excited about for the future? What are you enjoying now? How are you talking about the upcoming surgery with family and friends? What supports have been helpful to you?

General question….why are you doing the gastric sleeve and not trying the medicine (weegovy / Mounjaro)?

i was planning on a gastric sleeve but now I think I’m going to try the medicine (wegovy/ Mounjaro). Im curious to hear your thoughts.

I have to pay out of pocket for the medicine and about $5000 for the surgery.

I think the drugs are too new to know about long term impact on health and how the body will cope after stopping injections and I don't want to wait for more studies before I take my health and weight under control. I was on other weight loss drugs from my doctor many years ago that did not work long term and also caused other issues (insomnia and rapid heartbeat).

I know for me the surgery is the best option as this a life long change I want and need to make. Plus I don't have to pay for the surgery as it is covered by the national insurance here.

hello if I can tell you anything LEARN TO SIP sipping is your friend. Set a goal to sip 1oz cup five times a day. Set up sipping challenges. You will need this after surgery. I just had surgery last Monday.

Thanks for the tip. It is something I am trying and failing at and it is one of the things that worries me as I am so used to gulping down water. I am kinda hoping that once I have my surgery next week the necessity to do all these things liek sip, eat small and slow, chew till liquid will just happen like magic!

I did by 1oz cups from Amazon to use as my guide once I am home after the surgery.

I hope you are doing well after your surgery :)

Anyway I am off for my last meal out with a friend for a long time seeing as tomorrow I have to prep to go to hospital on Monday afternoon.

Hey there OBX mine is this week nervous as well, but nothing to much to worry about I think.

I am also bringing a loose sun dress to wear home.

Yes!

my surgery date is July 31st. I’ve been telling my friends and family. Most are very supportive and some have asked why this is necessary but for the most part folks have been supportive.

I’ve also been following social media accounts which is very encouraging. Not as many men out there talking about this but I don’t think the experience is very different between genders.

I’m still a month out and wonder what are the things I can be doing now to make sure this all goes as smooth as possible.

Welcome, @Colin from California! Thanks for sharing! I'm glad you've found supportive people, that really sets you up for success.

I have felt very informed by https://www.oursleevedlifepodcast.com/. The two hosts have had VSG and they interview others who have had it as well as experts in the bariatric field like dieticians, surgeons, trainers, protein product creators. In their episodes in the 50s they interview the brother of one of the hosts, so you might find that helpful.

By what are the things you could be doing now do you mean like in terms of food or exercise or habit changes?
