Food advice - travelling to the US

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, I need your advice!

I am going on holiday to the US (Nevada, Utah & Arizona) and other than suuuuper excited, I am also really nervous about eating there and could really use you guys’ help.

My surgeon gave me the strict guideline of never eating anything that is over 5 grams of sugar per 100 grams. I have followed this to a T so far and want to continue to do so on holiday as well.
In the EU (where I live) there’s an ingredient breakdown at the back of the package with ‘xx g carbs, of which xx g sugar’ per serving size AND per 100g. So I’ve been using that to check everything I buy!
Is there a similar thing in the US? If so, I’m guessing it won’t be in grams but maybe oz? What would 5g per 100g be in oz?

In restaurants I go with things I am familiar with and know doesn’t have sugar in them.. nervous about being in another country where I don’t know what half the dishes are, let alone how they’d usually be prepared!!

Please do share if you have any other advice or tips that may come in handy!
Like maybe things to avoid, or restaurants, or things to try that are definitely okay.
Can you tell I’m nervous?? 😩😆

USA are in grams as well but not per 100g but by serving size, and at the top of the chart, it says how many servings per package.

Try your best to stick with fresh food- and ask for no sugar in sauces at restaurants. There is a HUGE diet culture here, dont be fooled by labels that say low carb or keto- check the numbers on the back of boxes/package for sure if you do chose to eat any packaged foods.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
